  • This experiment was conducted to determine the optimum dosage of gamma rays for inducing artificial mutation of several mutant characters in the flue-cured tobacco. 1) In Hicks and BY 104, the gammarays irradiation has no significantly different effect on seed germination from the control. However, the average dosage for 50% growth inhibition was 25-30kr for all the varieties tested, which inhibition 46-52% and 43-57% of the seedling growths for Hicks and BY 104, respectively. 2) A mutant line 83H-5 was selected from Hicks by irradiation gamma ray at the level of 30kr. It has white flower, more resistance to bacterial wilt, Pssudomonas solanacearum, lower plant and stalk height, narrower leaf width, larger leaf shape index(lento width) and later days to flower when compared with the original variety Hicks. 3) White flower was recessive to pink flower in F, and Br (F1 X Hicks) progenies. F2 population of the cross gave segregation ratio of 3 pink flower:1 white flower, and B, (F1 X 83H-5) Population gave 1:1 ratio. Results showed that the white flower character is governed by a single recessive gene.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the morphological characteristics of the plants and seeds of Ainsliaea acerifolia and to determine the optimum condition for producing sprouts from the seeds. Plant height, flower stalk length, and pod number were higher in natural habitat than in campus farm. Average 1.2 seeds per pod was set but only 0 to 2 seeds per plant was set in plants with the enveloped flower stalks, indicating that this is an outcrossing species. Most of seeds were 9-11mm long and 1.1-1.4mm wide. Fresh weight of seeds was ranged from 10mg to 17mg. Seeds germinated well at 15$^{\circ}C$ and 2$0^{\circ}C$. Mean germination period was 11.5 day at 15 to $25^{\circ}C$. Sprouts grown at 15$^{\circ}C$ was longest(5.4cm) and heaviest(738mg/10 sprouts). Chlorophyll content was 333mg per fresh weight 110g. Protein, Fe, vitamin Bl, vitamin B2, and vitamin C were respectively 23.7mg, 6.4mg, 1.82mg, 0.49mg, and 10..7mg.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the cutting mechanism of the reciprocating knife of combine harvester. The cutting operation of reciprocating knife was demonstrated through the cutting pattern diagram which was drawn by computer graphics. Various kinds and dimensions of standard-type reciprocating knives were analyzed by the developed program. The results are summarized as follows : (1) For the 50mm standard reciprocating knife, the bunching area and the maximum stalk-deflection were decreased rapidly according to the increase of cutting velocity ratio by 1.0 and decreased very slowly over this ratio. But, the secondary cut was occurred at ratio of 1.0 and increased rapidly over this ratio. (2) The 76mm standard knife showed better cutting mechanism than the 50mm, in two respects : the larger cutting area per one stroke and the lower revolutional speed of crank shaft for the same cutting velocity. (3) In respect to the bunching area and the secondary cutting length, the adequate height of 50mm standard reciprocating knife was 45~50mm. (4) In order to maintain the proper cutting mechanism, the adequate cutting velocity at forward speed of 0.5㎧ to 1.2m/s was from 0.4m/s to 1.2m/s for the standard knife.

  • Experiments on sweet sorghum(sorgo) with different population per unit area were conducted from 1966 to 1968 for the first time in Korea. By increasing plant population stalk weight, refinable sugar and seed weight per plot were increased, but stalk weight per plant, brix percentage, sugar content, stem diameter and 1, 000 seed weight were decreased. Plant height, maturity and lodging were not affected by the treatments. The result obtained has suggested that the effects of plant spacing within row on the characteristics of plant growth and on yields were greater than those of row width. Negative correlations existed between sugar content and sugar yield, and seed weight per plant and seed yield. The optimal plant population in this study ranged from 16, 700 to 22, 200 plants per 10a, row width of 60cm and plant spacing in row of 15 to 20cm resulted in the highest sugar and seed.

  • The growth, development, and morphological characteristics of Echinochtoa colons (L.) Link were determined through one life cycle. E. colons emerged 2 to 3 days after seeding (DAS) and reached the two leaf stage by 8 DAS. During the early growth stages, root length was greater than plant height, but the relationship was reversed from 4 weeks after seeding (WAS). Tillering started from the third leaf of the main culm as the sixth leaf on the main calm emerged. The unfolding of the leaves and tillering followed a regular pattern during the vegetative growth period. This resulted in the production of 19 tillers (5 primary, 12 secondary, 1 tertiary, and I nodal) at the 14-leaf stage. Shoot-root weight ratio was highest just before panicle initiation. The second spike from the top of the panicle was the shortest and produced the fewest seeds. Thereafter, spike length and the number of seeds per spike generally increased, the lower the position of the spike on the panicle. Seeds on the lower spikes weighed less and had lower germination ability than those from the upper spikes. Adventitious roots arose from the leaf sheath bases of a flowering stalk. The ability to produce adventitious roots was greater in a younger stalls than in an older stalk.
