  • Stainless steels are alloy steels with a nominal chromium content of at least 11 percent, with other alloy additions. The stainlessness and corrosion resistance of these alloy steels are attributed to the presence of a passive oxide film on the surface. When exposed to conditions like Resistance Spot Welding (RSW) process that remove the passive oxide film, stainless steels are subject to corrosive attack. And exposure to elevated temperatures causes oxidation (discoloration) of areas around indentation in Spot welding. In this paper, deal with the effect of shielding gas (Ar) preventing the corrosion, oxidation of stainless steel. And find the optimal shielding gas flow rate. In addition, suggest effective purging method for direct/indirect spot welding process.

  • Stainless-clad (SC) bimetallic steels that are manufactured by metallurgically bonding stainless steels as cladding metal and conventional mild steels as substrate metal, are kind of advanced steel plate products. Such advanced composite steels are gaining increasingly widespread usage in a range of engineering structures and have great potential to be used extensively for large civil and building infrastructures. Unfortunately, research work on the SC bimetallic steels from material level to structural design level for the applications in structural engineering field is very limited. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to investigate the material behaviour of the SC bimetallic steels under the cyclic loading which structural steels usually could encounter in seismic scenario. A number of SC bimetallic steel coupon specimens are tested under monotonic and cyclic loadings. The experimental monotonic and cyclic stress-strain curves of the SC bimetallic steels are obtained and analysed. The effects of the clad ratio that is defined as the ratio of the thickness of cladding layer to the total thickness of SC bimetallic steel plate on the monotonic and cyclic behaviour of the SC bimetallic steels are studied. Based on the experimental observations, a cyclic constitutive model with combined hardening criterion is recommended for numerical simulation of the cyclic behaviour of the SC bimetallic steels. The parameters of the constitutive model for the SC bimetallic steels with various clad ratios are calibrated. The research outcome presented in this paper may provide essential reference for further seismic analysis of structures fabricated from the SC bimetallic steels.

  • The present work dealt with the high temperature thermal shock properties of 316 stainless steels, in conjunction with a detailed analysis of their microstructures. In particular, the effects of the thermal shock temperature difference and thermal shock cycle number on the properties of 316 stainless steels were investigated. A thermal shock test for 316 stainless steel was carried out at thermal shock temperature differences from $300^{\circ}C$ to $1000^{\circ}C$. The cyclic thermal shock test for the 316 stainless steel was performed at a thermal shock temperature difference of $700^{\circ}C$ up to 100 cycles. The characterization of 316 stainless steels was evaluated using an optical microscope and a three-point bending test. Both the microstructure and flexural strength of 316 stainless steels were affected by the high-temperature thermal shock. The flexural strength of 316 stainless steels gradually increased with an increase in the thermal shock temperature difference, accompanied by a growth in the grain size of the microstructure. However, a thermal shock temperature difference of $800^{\circ}C$ produced a decrease in the flexural strength of the 316 stainless steel because of damage to the material surface. The properties of 316 stainless steels greatly depended on the thermal shock cycle number. In other words, the flexural strength of 316 stainless steels decreased with an increase in the thermal shock cycle number, accompanied by a linear growth in the grain size of the microstructure. In particular, the 316 stainless steel had a flexural strength of about 500 MPa at 100 thermal-shock cycles, which corresponded to about 80% of the strength of the as-received materials.

  • Stainless steels have been widely considered as metallic bipolar plates, due to their passive surface film, which is good for corrosion resistance. However, the high resistivity of the passive film increases interfacial contact resistance between the bipolar plates and the electrodes. Stainless steels thermal spray coated with a mixture of tungsten carbide and stainless steel powders showed that the coated layer safely combined with the matrix but they suffered many internal defects including voids and cracks. Many cracks were formed in the coated layer and the interface of the matrix and the coated layer during the rolling process. The coated and rolled stainless steels showed lower interfacial contact resistance and corrosion resistance than bare stainless steel because of low resistivity of tungsten carbide and numerous defects, which caused crevice corrosion, in the coated layer.

  • Various kinds of corrosion prevention methods have been developed. It is known that the method of electrochemical protection is more effective and economical than any other method on the large scale metal structures in corrosive solutions. Strong acid solutions such as nitric and sulfuric acid solutions are often used in industries, and the expensive stainless steel is almost exclusively used for the equipment that comes in contact with such acid solutions. However, it is more reasonable that carbon steel is used rather than stainless steel depending upon concentration of those acid solutions from the economical viewpoint. In this study, the typical strong acid solution such as nitric and sulfuric acid solutions are chosen for the experiment and the selected materials of specimen are the stainless steels of SUS 304L and SUS 316L, the carbon steels of SS 41, SM 50 and RA 32, and highly pure lead. Electrochemical protection diagrams can be drawn with data from the external cathodic and anodic polarization curves of SUS 304L, SUS 316L and SM 50 steels in 5-60% nitric acid solutions and from those polarization curves of SS 41, RA 32, SM 50 and SUS 316L steels, and highly pure lead in 2.5-98% sulfuric acid solutions at the slow scanning rate. The data obtained with using the determination method of the optimum cathodic protection potential, the Tafel extrapolation method and the characteristics of anodic polarization curves. The main results obtained from the diagrams are as follows: 1) In nitric acid solution : (1) Corrosion potentials exist in each of those corrosion zones on the stainless steels in the lower concentration than about 12% solutions and on the high tensile strength steels in the lower concentration than about 30% solutions, but the corrosion current (density) in each zone is small on the above mentioned former steels and large on the latter ones. (2) The stainless steels can be self-passivated in the higher concentration than 15% solutions, and the high tensile strength steels gives rise to the same phenomenon in the higher concentration than 35% solutions. (3) The stainless steels in the lower concentration than 60% solutions and the high tensile strength steels in the higher concentration than 35% solutions can be used without protection, but the latter steels must ve protected anodically in the lower conccentration than about 30% solutions. 2) In sufuric acid solution : (1) The carbon steels can be self-passivated in the higher concentration than 45% solutions, and the SUS 316L steel in higher concentration than 75% solutions and the lead in all concentration solutions also gives rise to the same phenomenon. (2) The lead in the lower concentration than 80% solutions and the SUS 316L steel in the higher concentration than 80% solutions can be used without protection. (3) The carbon steels in the higher concentration than 50% solutions also can be used without protecting economically, but the SUS 316L steel in the 20-70% solutions are considerably corrosive without protecting anodically.

  • In this study, we report on an investigation of proton radiation resistance of 410 martensitic stainless steels under 3 MeV proton with the doses ranging from $1.0{\times}10^{15}$ to $1.0{\times}10^{17}p/cm^2$ at the temperature 623 K. Vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD) were used to study the variation of magnetic properties and structural damages by virtue of proton irradiation, respectively. VSM and XRD analysis revealed that the 410 martensitic stainless steels showed proton radiation resistance up to $10^{17}p/cm^2$. Proton energy degradation and flux attenuations in 410 stainless steels as a function of penetration depth were calculated by using Stopping and Range of Ions in Matter (SRIM) code. It suggested that the 410 stainless steels have the radiation resistance up to $5.2{\times}10^{-3}$ dpa which corresponds to neutron irradiation of $3.5{\times}10^{18}n/cm^2$. These results could be used to predict the maintenance period of SUS410 stainless steels in fission power plants.

  • Based upon the good compatibility to neutron irradiation and high temperature water environment, austenitic stainless steels are widely used for core internal structural materials of light water reactors. But, recently, intergranular cracking was detected in the stainless steels for the core applications in some commercial PWR plants. Authors studied on the root cause of the intergranular cracking and developed the countermeasure including the alternative materials for these core applications. The intergranular cracking in these core applications are defined as an irradiation assisted mechanical cracking and irradiation assisted stress corrosion cracking. In this paper, the root cause of the intergranular cracking and its countermeasure are summarized and discussed.

  • In this communication the development of a new metal injection moulding (MIM) system for duplex stainless steels is presented. The metal powders were prepared by premixing 316L and 430L stainless steels gas atomised powders in a ratio of 50:50. The binder used to prepare the feedstock was composed by HDPE and paraffin wax. Torque measurements of the mixture indicated that the maximum amount of metal was 68 vol%. The polymeric part was driven off by thermal debinding and the sintering was performed in low vacuum. The final densities were close to the theoretical ones.

  • Ferritic stainless steels of the 400 series have been available for automotive exhaust system, heat exchanger, radiater etc. in various industrial because heat resistance, corrosion resistance and strength are excellent. Especially, automotive exhaust system is required good heat resistance because typical temperature of exhaust system exposed during operation of engine is reach up to $800^{\circ}C$. However, research for effect of high temperature in ferritic stainless steels is not enough. In this study, high temperature tensile properties of lap weld of ferritic stainless steels(STS 429) were investigated. In accordance with heat input, lap welds had been produced and were evaluated at high temperature($800^{\circ}C$) to compare high temperature tensile properties. In addition, room temperature tensile tests were carried out for non-aging and aging specimens. As a result of R.T tensile test, non-aging specimens were fractured in base metal except for low heat input specimen and aging specimens were fractured in weld metal. Also high temperature tensile test were carried out by aging specimen. After high temperature tensile test, fracture of aged specimen was occurred in base metal except for low heat input specimen. Fracture surface of low heat input specimen in weld metal was confirmed as brittle fracture with observation using scanning electron microscope(SEM). Significant decrease in ultimate tensile strength (between 82 and 85%) was observed for aged ferritic stainless steels(STS 429) when tested at high temperature.
