  • Lean duplex stainless steels have been developed in Korea for the purpose of being used in the seawater systems of industry. There are also many important seawater systems in nuclear power plants. These systems supply seawater to cooling water condenser tubes, heat exchanger tubes, related pipes and chlorine injection systems. The flow velocity of some part of seawater systems in nuclear power plants is high and damages of components from corrosion are severe. The considered lean duplex stainless steels are STS329LD (20.3Cr-2.2Ni-1.4Mo) and STS329J3L (22.4Cr-5.7Ni-3Mo) and PRENs of them are 29.4 and 37.3 respectively. Physical, mechanical and micro-structural properties of them are evaluated, and electrochemical corrosion resistance is measured quantitatively in NaCl solution. Critical Pitting Temperatures (CPT)s are measured on these alloys and pit depths are evaluated using laser microscope. Long period field tests on these alloys are now being performed, and some results are going to be presented in the following study.

  • The corrosion damage of materials in marine environment mainly occurs by Cl- ions due to the breakdown of passive films. Additionally, various characteristics in seawater such as salinity, temperature, immersion time, flow rate, and biological activity also affect corrosion characteristics. In this study, the corrosion characteristics of stainless steels (STS 304 and STS 316L) and anodized aluminum alloys (AA 3003 and AA 6063) were evaluated with seawater temperature parameters. A potentiodynamic polarization experiment was conducted in a potential range of -0.25 V to 2.0 V at open circuit potential (OCP). Corrosion current density and corrosion potential were obtained through the Tafel extrapolation method to analyze changes in corrosion rate due to temperature. Corrosion behavior was evaluated by measuring weight loss before/after the experiment and also observing surface morphology through a scanning electronic microscope (SEM) and 3D microscopy. Weight loss, maximum damage depth and pitting damage increased as seawater temperature increased, and furthermore, the tendency of higher corrosion current density with an increase of temperature attributed to an increase in corrosion rate. There was lower pitting damage and lower corrosion current density for anodized aluminum alloys than for stainless steels as the temperature increased.

  • This work is concerned with a statistical analysis of factors affecting the irradiation-assisted stress corrosion cracking (IASCC) of austenitic stainless steels for core internals of pressurized water reactors (PWR). The microstructural and environmental factors were reviewed and critically evaluated by the statistical analysis. The Cr depletion at grain boundary was determined to have no significant correlation with the IASCC susceptibility. The threshold irradiation fluence of IASCC in a PWR was statistically calculated to decrease from 5.799 to 1.914 DPA with increase of temperature from 320 to $340^{\circ}C$. From the analysis of the relationship between applied stress and time-to-failure of stainless steel components based on an accelerated life testing model, it was found that B2 life of a baffle former bolt exposed to neutron fluence of 20 and 75 DPA was at least 2.5 and 0.4 year, respectively, within 95% confidence interval.

  • Austenitic stainless steels (ASS) are extensively employed in various sectors such as nuclear, power, petrochemical, oil and gas because of their excellent structural strength and resistance to corrosion. SS304 and SS316 are the predominant choices for piping, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, nuclear reactor core components and support structures, but they are susceptible to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in chloride-rich environments. Over the course of several decades, extensive research efforts have been directed towards evaluating SCC using diverse methodologies and models, albeit some uncertainties persist regarding the precise progression of cracks. This review paper focuses on the application of Acoustic Emission Technique (AET) for assessing SCC damage mechanism by monitoring the dynamic acoustic emissions or inelastic stress waves generated during the initiation and propagation of cracks. AET serves as a valuable non-destructive technique (NDT) for in-service evaluation of the structural integrity within operational conditions and early detection of critical flaws. By leveraging the time domain and time-frequency domain techniques, various Acoustic Emission (AE) parameters can be characterized and correlated with the multi-stage crack damage phenomena. Further theories of the SCC mechanisms are elucidated, with a focus on both the dissolution-based and cleavage-based damage models. Through the comprehensive insights provided here, this review stands to contribute to an enhanced understanding of SCC damage in stainless steels and the potential AET application in nuclear industry.

  • Oxidation behavior of 304 and 430 stainless steel were studied using thin film X-ray analysis and glow discharge spectrum analysis (here-after GDS). The oxidation layer of 304 stainless steel was composed of $Cr_2O_3\;and\;FeCrO_4$ and its thickness was about $1.5{\mu}m$ after $1\~5$ minutes of annealing at $1120^{\circ}C$ open air. However, the oxidation layer of 430 stainless steels was mainly composed of $Cr_2O_3$ and its typical thickness was 0.5um after $1\~5$ minutes of annealing at $1000^{\circ}C$ open air. Electro-chemical analysis revealed that the descaling of oxidation layer could be activated by Fe, Cr dissolution from the matrix behind the oxidation layer at the current density of $5\~10ASD$ and by Fe, Cr-oxide dissolution from the oxidation layer at the current density over than 10ASD. Electrolytic stripping of 430 and 304 revealed the intial incubation period of descaling by oxygen evolving at low current density range such as $5\~10ASD$. However the dissolution of oxide layer was occurred when applying the anodic current of $10\~20ASD$ on 430 and 304 stainless steels. It was suggested that the electrolytic pickling of high Cr bearing stainless steel such as 430 and 304 seemed to be the more effective in the high current density range such as $10\~20ASD$ than the low current density range such as $5\~10ASD$.

  • Because austenitic stainless steel causes localized corrosion such as pitting and crevice corrosion in environments containing chlorine, corrosion resistance is improved by surface treatment or changes of the alloy element content. Accordingly, research using cyclic potentiodynamic polarization experiment to evaluate the properties of the passivation film of super austenitic stainless steel that improved corrosion resistance is being actively conducted. In this investigation, the electrochemical properties of austenitic stainless steel and super austenitic stainless steel were compared and analyzed through cyclic potentiodynamic polarization experiment with varying temperatures. Repassivation properties were not observed in austenitic stainless steels at all temperature conditions, but super austenitic stainless steels exhibited repassivation behaviors at all temperatures. This is expressed as α values using a relational formula comparing the localized corrosion rate and general corrosion rate. As the α values of UNS S31603 decreased with temperature, the tendency of general corrosion was expected to be higher, and the α value of UNS N08367 increased with increasing temperatures, so it is considered that the tendency of localized corrosion was dominant.

  • The effect of primary solidification phase on the solidification cracking sensitivity, corrosion resistance and toughness at cryogenic temperature was investigated for the austenitic stainless steel welds. The conclusions were summarized as follows; 1. Soldification crack sensitivity of austenitic stainless steel welds depends on the primary solidification mode. 2. Austenitic stainless steels were very susceptible to solidification cracking in case of solidification as primary ${\gamma}$ and immune when solidified as primary $\delta$. 3. When the ratio of Creq/Nieq is in the range of 1.46 to 1.55, the most resistance against solidification cracking was obtained. These results agreed well with the relationship between primary solidification mode, corrosion resistance and toughness at cryogenic temperature. 4. Optimum toughness, corrosion and solidification cracking resistance can be obtained when alloys having chemical compositions described above and solidifies as primary $\delta$ containing no ferrite at room temperature.

  • The phase separation in ferrite phase of duplex stainless steel is the primary cause of thermal aging embrittlement of the LWR primary pressure boundary components. In this study the phase separation of simulated duplex stainless steel was detected by Mossbauer spectroscopy and magnetic property analysis by VSM(Vibrating Specimen Magnetometer). The simulated duplex stainless steels, Fe-Cr binary, Fe-Cr-Ni ternary, and Fe-Cr-Ni-Si quarternary allots, were aged at 370 and 40$0^{\circ}C$ up to 5,340 hours. It was observed from Mossbauer spectra analysis that internal magnetic field increases with aging time and from VSM that the specific saturation magnetization and Curie temperature increase with aging time. These result are indicative that phase separation into Fe-rich region and Cr-rich region is caused by thermal aging in the temperature range of 370~40$0^{\circ}C$ In cases of specimens containing Ni, the increase of specific saturation magnetization is much higher. This implies that Ni seems to promote Fe-Cr interdiffusion, which accelerates the phase separation into Fe-rich $\alpha$ phase and Cr-rich $\alpha$' phase.

  • A shot blasting process is to improve the surface quality of stainless steels. The process is similar to a well-known shot peening that is used to strengthen the surface via the residual stress. In the shot blasting process, it is important to decide many parameters, such as the size, incident angle and velocity of shot balls, to effectively get rid of the iron oxide on the surface of stainless steels. In this study, the simulation of the shot blasting process is carried out by a finite element software, which can help to find out the optimal design parameters to cause the delamination of the iron oxide from the stainless steel substrate. The results obtained are also compared to those of the discrete element method to verify them.
