  • Multipass welds of 316L stainless steel have been widely employed to the pipes of Liquid Metal Reactors. Owing to localized heating and a subsequent rapid cooling by the welding process, residual stress arises in the weld of the pipe. In this study, the residual stresses in the 316L stainless steel pipe welds were calculated by the finite element method using the ANSYS code. Also, the residual stresses both on the surface and in the interior of the thickness were measured by the HRPD(High Resolution Powder Diffractometer) instrumented in the HANARO Reactor. The experimental data and the calculated results were compared and the characteristics of the distribution of the residual stress were discussed.

  • The objective of this paper is to evaluate the fracture resistance characteristics of SA508 CL.1a carbon steel, TP347 stainless steel and their associated welds manufactured for primary coolant system of Ulchin 3,4 nuclear power plants. The effect of various parameters such as pipe size, welding method, chemical composition, crack plane orientation, metallography and fractography on the material properties were discussed. Test results showed that the effect of pipe size on fracture toughness is negligible while the effect of welding method on fracture toughness is significant. In addition, the drop of fracture toughness in the field fabrication weld of TP347 stainless steel is probably due to the large amount of $\sigma$-phase precipitated on the $\delta$-ferrite boundary and the large size dimples.

  • The thermal performance degradation of heat pipes is caused by the non-condensable gas generation mainly due to the electrochemical corrosion which results from the reaction of working fluids with tube materials. In this study, a simplified method described below was proposed to estimate the life of heat pipes concerning the non-condensable gas generation. The temperature distributions at the outer surface of heat pipes was measured, and based on them the amount of non-condensable gas of hydrogen was estimated. Applying it to the Arrhenius model, the mass generation of hydrogen and the volume occupied by the gas In heat pipes could be estimated for an operating temperature and time. Moreover, this simplified method was applied to the accelerated life test of nine methanol-stainless steel heat pipe samples.

  • This study was performed to observe the change of stainless steel pipe interacting with alkaline solution. We used STS316L and STS304 as samples which were soaked in alkaline solution. We measured the samples by use of FE-SEM, EDX, SIMS to observe the surface and depth profile of both samples. The result showed that the precipitate appeared on the surface of both samples from 5 days. but the precipitate was confirmed to be decreased as time passes. but the quantitative change of precipitates at both samples was different as time passed. The EDX showed that the precipitate is Potassium from solution of Electrolysis. The result also showed that the primary elements of stainless steel pipeline and of Alkaline Solution were changed. The change of primary elements was severe between 5 days to 16 days and was stable around 40 days at both samples. The reaction of STS316L with alkaline solution was lower than STS304. We hoped that this study would be the foundation of developing the electrode of the alkaline hydrogen generator.

  • Recently, cabled-suspension bridges and suspension bridge have been increasingly built in korea. But such structures were often damaged by fire due to car collison. In this study, the cabled-suspension bridges constructed under the kind of the project of national road aggrandizement are modeled using Solid Works 2007. The COSMOS FloWorks 2007 software are used for Heat Transfer Analysis and Thermal Stress Analysis. The safety of wire, HDPE pipe and stainless steel pipe are investigated. The major variables for the analysis are the temperature of the heat source, the distance between the fire-proof bulk head and the heat source, wind velocity, and the height of the end of Stainless steel pipe.

  • Experimental and numerical study was done to confirm the effect of the flexible tube in pipeline on transient flow oscillation. Experiment was made for a pipeline with and without deformable flexible tube using a single pumping system of main stainless pipe. The wave speeds of main pipe and flexible tube were calculated from the pipe material properties, structures, and boundary conditions. Time dependent pressure fluctuations were calculated for the pipeline using the simple and the Kelvin-Voigt viscoelastic models for the deformation of main pipe and flexible tube. Pressure calculated by the Kelvin-Voigt viscoelastic model showed better agreement with measured one than pressure by the simple model. Experimental and numerical results show that the maximum pressure as well as amplitude of pressure oscillation was decreased by inserting short flexible tube in pipeline. Hence, inserted short flexible tube to pipeline was found to be effective for the suppression of strong pressure oscillation. Moreover, the wave speed in pipe was discussed based on numerical and experimental results.

  • The exhaust tail pipe is the only visible part of the exhaust system on a vehicle. The conventional way to make the tail pipe is welding after stamping. There are various problems that occur during the stamping of stainless steel sheets such as scratching and local fracture. Problems during welding can also occur due to poor weldability. Tube hydroforming can be a solution, which eliminates these problems. The current study deals with the development of tube hydroforming for a vehicle tail pipe using finite element analysis for a free-feeding method. The current study focuses on the development of a proper load path for the tail pipe hydroforming and how bending influences the subsequent processing steps. The FE analysis results were compared with experimental results. This study shows the importance of bending and the necessity of considering bending when performing a tube hydroforming analysis.

  • There are various wick types for heat pipe. In the present study, the manufacturing technology of a sintered wick among various wick types is discussed. The sintering technology using metal has been applied broadly in the field of electronic-telecommunication as well as heat pipes. A study of manufacturing procedure and characteristic of sintered wick for heat pipe have been performed. Copper powder was used as wick material and stainless steel as a mandrel. A manufacturing technology of the mandrel for arranging vapor core in heat pipe, a sintering technology by first or second times and operating temperature for sintering, the measurements of a porosity, pore size, and pore distribution of sintered wick were considered. In the meantime, a heat pipe with sintered wick has been manufactured and a performance test of the heat pipe has been performed in order to review cooling performance. The performance test results for the 4mm diameter heat pipe with the sintered wick shows the stability since the temperature difference between a evaporator and a condenser of the heat pipe is less than $4.4^{\circ}C$, and thermal resistance is less than $0.7^{\circ}C/W$.

  • Stainless steel pipe of type 304 the with a wall thickness of 26.9 mm and the outer diameter 406.4 mm is welded by manual arc welding process. Mechanical properties and fracture toughness of type 304 stainless steel are investigated in the temperature ranging from room temperature to -162$^{\circ}C$ The results obtained are summarized as follows. The tensile strength noticeably increases as the temperature becomes lower while the yield strength is relatively insensitive to temperature. The Charpy impact energy and CTOD values become higher in the case that crack propagation direction is aligned to the transverse axis upon the rolling direction than longitudinal direction. The drop of fracture toughness is associated with the noticeable diminution of plastic component as temperature seduces from room temperature to -162$^{\circ}C$ .
