  • The present work demonstrates the mechanical and electrical responses of submicrocrystalline Cu-3%Ag alloy as a function of strain imposed by equal channel angular pressing(ECAP). From transmission electron microscope observation, the resulting microstructures of Cu-3%Ag alloy deformed by ECAP for 8-pass or more consist of reasonably fine, equiaxed grains without having a strong preferred orientation, suggesting that microstructure evolution is slower than that of pure-Al and its alloys owing to low stacking fault energy. The results of room temperature tension tests reveal that, as the amount of applied strain increases, the tensile strength of submicrocrystalline Cu-3%Ag alloy increases whereas losing both the ductility and the electrical conductivity. Such phenomenon can be explained based on microstructure featured by the non-equilibrium grain boundaries.

  • The mechanical properties, press formability and texture of a TWIP steel were investigated. This steel combines both high strength and high ductility due to so called TWIP effect which are related to the microstructural changes. The formation of twins during deformation leads to an increase of its mechanical properties. In this study, the texture and mechanical properties evolutions of a TWIP steel subjected to tensile tests and press trials at room temperature were investigated in relation to the feasibility of the application to automotive body parts.

  • The wear test has been performed to evaluate the wear mechanism of steam generator (SG) tube materials against ferritic stainless steel in water environment. The wear rates of SG tube materials depend on the change of mechanical properties between contact surfaces during wear test. From the subsurface hardness test, Inconel 690 is more work-hardened than Inconel 600 even though these materials have similar hardness values before the wear test. Main cause is due to the difference of stacking fault energy with the chromium content. In water environment, wear mechanism is closely related with the continuous formation and fracture of deformation layers at the contact surfaces.

  • The influences of vanadium addition on the cavitation erosion resistance pf Fe-Cr-Ni-Si-C hardfacing alloy were investigated using a vibratory apparatus up to 30 hrs. It was shown that 1wt.%V additioned alloy improved the resistance to cavitation damage. However, further increase in V content up to 2wt.% reduced the cavitation erosion resistance. It was considered that the addition of V developed the cavitation erosion resistance by reducing the stacking fault energy of Fe-Cr-Ni-Si-C alloy. However, the further increase in V content seemed to reduce the cavitation erosion resistance by increasing the matrix/carbide interfacial area, which was the preferential sites of the cavitation damage.

  • The changes in damping capacity with volume fractions of thermal and deformation-induced ${\varepsilon}$ martensites were compared and analyzed in an Fe-23%-Mn alloy. The volume fraction of thermal ${\varepsilon}$ martensite increased with decreasing cooling temperature, whereas that of deformation-induced ${\varepsilon}$ martensite increased steeply up to 10%- of cold rolling and nearly saturated in further cold rolling. In the case of thermal ${\varepsilon}$ martensite, the damping capacity increased linearly with the increase in ${\varepsilon}$ martensite content. For the deformation-induced ${\varepsilon}$ martensite, however, the damping capacity increased continuously up to 70%- of ${\varepsilon}$ martensite, over which it decreased suddenly. TEM microstructures showed that the deterioration of damping capacity above 70%- of deformation-induced ${\varepsilon}$ martensite is ascribed to the introduction of perfect dislocations, which play a important role in inhibiting the movement of damping sources such as stacking fault boundaries inside ${\varepsilon}$ martensite, ${\varepsilon}$ martensite variant boundaries and ${\gamma}/{\varepsilon}$ interfaces.

  • The effect of the addition of Co and N and subzero treatment on tensile strength and damping capacity was investigated in Fe-Cr-Mn alloy. Austenite was transformed into martensite by cold rollins increasing the degree of cold rollins led to an increase in the volume fraction of martensite. The damping capacity linearly increased with increasing volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}$ martensite in cold rolled specimens and subzero treated specimens after cold rolling. The volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}$ martensite, tensile strength and damping capacity was also increased by the addition of Co, while this treatment decreased the elongation. However, the volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}$ martensite, elongation and damping capacity were reduced by the addition of N, although the tensile strength increased. Tensile strength and damping capacity werealso increased by subzero treatment, while elongation decreased.

  • We have the homoepitaxiallayers on the surfaces of Si(111) with and without the adsorbed surfactants, for example, Ag or Sn. In this paper, We have studied the difference of growth for these two cases by the observation of intensity oscillations of RHEED specular spots during the growing processes. In the case of growth without the adsorbed surfactants, the Si atoms fill first the stacking fault layer of Si(111) 7 ${\times}$7 structure. Therefore, the irregular oscillations are observed in the early stage of growing process. However, in the case of growth with the adsorbed surfactants, the surfactants already have the ${\sqrt}{3}$ ${\times}$ ${\sqrt}{3}$ structures on the surfaces of Si(111) at the adjucate temperatures of 300`$600^{\circ}C$ and 190~$860^{\circ}C$ for the surfactants of Ag and Sn, respectively. We also find that the number of oscillations is a little larger for the case of growth with the adsorbed surfactants. The reason for this is that for the case of growth with the adsorbed surfactants, the activation energies of Si atoms decrease due to the segregation of surfactants toward the growing surfaces.

  • Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) is widely used for quantitative microstructural analysis of the crystallographic nature of variety of materials such as metals, minerals, and ceramics. EBSD can provide a wide range of information on materials including grain size, grain orientation, texture, and phase identity. In the case of metallic alloys, EBSD now has become an essential technique to analyze the texture, particularly when severe deformation is applied to the alloys. In addition, EBSD can be one of the very useful tools in identification of twin, particularly in Mg alloys. In Mg alloys different type of twin can occur depending on the c/a ratio and stacking fault energy on the twinning plane. Such an occurrence of different type of twin can be most effectively analyzed using EBSD technique. In this article, the recent development of Mg alloys and occurrence of twin in Mg are reviewed. Then, recently published example for identification of tension and compression twins in AZ31 and ZX31 is introduced to explain how EBSD can be used for identification of twin in Mg.

  • The austenitic Fe-Mn alloys have received considerable attention as a possible candidate for the automotive structural materials due to their high strength and high formability with high elongation. This research investigates the effect of alloying elements on the phase transformation, deformation behavior and mechanical properties in high Mn steels for the development of a high strength high ductility steel. The mechanical stability of austenitic phases is very important for high ductility and it depends largely on the composition of carbon, manganese and aluminum. The dominant deformation mode shifts from TRIP to TWIP mode as the amount of C, Mn and Al is increased. Especially, even a small amount of Al addition facilitates significantly TWIP deformation due to the increase of stacking fault energy in Fe-Mn alloys, this leads to increase the ductility and also decrease the crack sensitivity.

  • The blue light emitting diode (LED) structure based on non-polar a-plane (11-20) GaN which was coated TiO2 nanoparticles using spin coating method was grown on r-plane (1-102) sapphire substrates to improve light extraction efficiency. We report on the emission and structural properties with temperature dependence of photoluminescence (PL) and x-ray rocking curves (XRC). From PL results at 13 K of undoped GaN samples, basal plane stacking fault (BSF) and near band edge (NBE) emission peak were observed at 3.434 eV and 3.484 eV, respectively. We also found the temperature-induced band-gap shrinkage, which was fitted well with empirical Varshini's equation. The PL intensity of TiO2 nanoparticles ?coated multiple quantum well (MQW) sample is decayed slower than that of no coating sample with increasing temperature. The anisotrophic strain and azimuth angle dependence in the films were shown from XRC results. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) along the GaN [11-20] and [1-100] directions were 564.9 arcsec and 490.8 arcsec, respectively. A small deviation of FWHM values at in-plane direction is attributed to uniform in-plane strain.
