Thermal simulation of typical stack-type and newly proposed planar-type micro-gas sensors were studied by FEM method. The thermal analyses for the proposed planar structure including temperatur distribution over the sensing layer and power consumption of the heater were carried using finite element method by computer simulation and well compared with those of typical stack-type micro-gas
sensor. The thermal properties of the microsensor from thermal simulation were compared with those of a actual device to investigate the acceptability of the computer simulation.
The purpose of this paper is to find an efficient solution for multiple constant multiplication (MCM) problem. Since the circuit structure can be represented as a directed acyclic graph, evolutionary computing is considered as an effective tool for optimization of circuit synthesis. In this paper, we propose a stack type operator as a chromosome element to synthesize a directed acyclic graph efficiently. This type of chromosome can represent a graph structure with a set of simple symbols and so we can employ the similar method to a conventional GA.

This paper proposes a grating scanner which is driven by a stack-type piezoelectric element. The mechanism of the grating scanner is based on flexure hinges. Using some constraints, the compliant mechanism is designed and then verified by Finite Element Analysis. The designed compliant mechanism is manufactured by wire electro-discharge machining, and then integrated with a stack-type piezoelectric element for actuation and a capacitance displacement sensor for measuring ultra-precision displacement. Experiments demonstrates the characteristics and the performances of the grating scanner using the terms of working range, resonance frequency, bandwidth and resolution. The grating scanner is applicable to a Moire interferometry for measuring 3-dimensional microscopic surface.
The stability of a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) stack is strongly dependent on the magnitude and profile of the internal chemical potential of the solid electrolyte. If the internal partial pressure is too high, the electrolyte can be delaminated from the electrodes. The formation of high internal pressure is attributed to a negative cell voltage, and this phenomenon can occur in a bad cell (with higher resistance) in a stack. This fact implies that the internal chemical potential plays an important role in determining the lifetime of a stack. In the present work, we fabricate planar type anode-supported cells ($25cm^2$) with a bi-layer electrolyte (with locally increased electronic conduction at the anode side) to prevent high internal pressure, and we test the fabricated cells under a negative voltage condition. The results indicate that the addition of electronic conduction in the electrolyte can effectively depress internal pressure and improve the cell stability.

The winter stack effect that occurs in vertical construction passages such as the stairwell or elevator shaft of a high-rise building negatively affects living environments, energy usage, and personal safety; therefore, a mitigation of the stack effect is required to improve building conditions. Recently, circulation-type facilities that comprise the usage of air blowers and vertical ducts were proposed as part of a mechanical approach to quantitatively control the stack effect. In this study, these circulation-type facilities were installed in a building stairwell and the performance of the device was evaluated during its operation. A numerical-analysis result was obtained under the test conditions using a network-model-based, numerical-analysis method, and the result was then used for a comparison with the test result.
Many tower-supported steel stacks have been constructed in Japan, primarily for economic reasons. However the dynamic behavior of these stacks under a strong wind is not well known and the wind load design standard for this type of a stack has not yet been formulated. In light of this situation, we carried out wind response observation of an operating tower-supported steel stack with and without a tuned-mass damper. The observation revealed the performance of the tuned-mass damper installed on the stack in order to control the wind-induced vibration. Based on the observed data, we performed a wind tunnel test of a specimen of the stack. In this paper we report the results of the wind tunnel test and some comparisons with the results of observation. Our findings are as follows: 1) the tuned-mass damper installed on the specimen in the wind tunnel test worked as well as the one on the observed stack, 2) the amplitude of the vortex-induced vibration of the specimen corresponded approximately to that of the observed stack, and 3) correlation between Scruton number and reduced amplitude, y/d, (y is amplitude, d is diameter) was confirmed by both the wind tunnel test and the observed results.

For a general office building having a center core, the distinction between the outer wall and the compartment should be clear, and it should be set at a stack effect pressure distribution acting on the respective compartment by a relative area ratio of the respective leak compartment. In the case of office buildings with an independent core for core there, some blocks of shares and exterior pressure distribution in buildings and office buildings typically have different characteristics. Therefore, if the stack effect reduction measures, designed on the basis of a general office building are applied to a stand-alone building, the core of the building should reflect the unique pressure distribution characteristics. This study, performed as part of the object corresponding to the flat plan of the building in the diversification trend, analyzed the stack effect that actually occurs in an office building having the properties intended for stand-core construction, and thus on the basis of and tested by the method of using a conventional stack effect reduction measures. Reviewed in the study, an independent cored office building that does not have the air flow path through the specific space with respect to the center core type office building has a feature, and the variation in characteristics of the pressure distribution inside the building according to this air flow path stack effect was reduced by a variety of measures that should be applied to determine the application.
A numerical simulation method has been developed to predict atmospheric flow and stack gas diffusion using a calculation domain of several km around a stack under complex terrain conditions containing buildings. The turbulence closure technique using a modified k-$\varepsilon$-type model under a non hydrostatic assumption was used for the flow calculation, and some of the calculation grids near the ground were treated as buildings using a terrain-following coordinate system. Stack gas diffusion was predicted using the Lagrangian particle model, that is, the stack gas was represented by the trajectories of released particles. The numerical model was applied separately to the flow and stack gas diffusion around a cubical building and to a two-dimensional ridge in this study, before being applied to an actual terrain containing buildings in our next study. The calculated flow and stack gas diffusion results were compared with those obtained by wind tunnel experiments, and the features of flow and stack gas diffusion, such as the increase in turbulent kinetic energy and the plume spreads of the stack gas behind the building and ridge, were reproduced by both calculations and wind tunnel experiments. Furthermore, the calculated profiles of the mean velocity, turbulent kinetic energy and concentration of the stack gas around the cubical building and the ridge showed good agreement with those of wind tunnel experiments.
A thermoacoustic refrigerator has not only considerable feasibility but also commercial usability, because it has high reliability, lower vibration, no moving part. and easy construction. In the present study, the resonant characteristics of a thermoacoustic refrigerator, varying the length of resonant tube from 400mm to 850mm, were investigated to improve performance. In order to determine the optimum position of the stack in the resonant tube and the optimum frequency, the simple open-tube-type thermoacoustic refrigerator was constructed. Air was used as a coolant. In the fifth harmonic, the largest $\DeltaT$ was $52.6^{\circ}C$ at 827Hz, tube length of 400mm, and stack length of 40mm.

One of the biggest problems in smoke control systems for high-rise buildings is stack effect, but there are no recognized methods or measures to solve the problem of stack effect as yet. The stack effect can be overcome by forming the uprising current inside the stair hall properly, but there is a limit to the height in supplying into the stair hall the smoke control air volume to be supplied to a floor in case of escape from fire. The limit to the height can be extended by over-coming the stack effect by pressurizing the stair hall and the ancillary room simultaneously. It can also be anticipated that the stack effect can be overcome by connecting the air supply shaft to the stair hall at the top. As a result of computer simulations using a network type of tool, it is found that adequate performance can be achieved by pressurizing the stair hall only for a building of 190m or less, and up to 360m when pressurizing the stair hall and the ancillary room simultaneously. In all those cases, however, an overpressure venting damper is required which operates within a suitable range for venting the overpressure outside.
