  • We demonstrate a pixel-isolated bistable twist-splay namatic (PI-BTSN) liquid crystal (LC) cell which has two stable states of splay and ${\pi}$-twist. Each state is stabilized by a multi-dimensional anchoring effect of pixel-isolating polymer walls without any chiral additives. Polymer walls are formed around the pixel region by anisotropic phase separation between LCs and reactive mesogens. Switching between the two states is archived by using vertical and horizontal electric fields. The memory mode of the fabricated LC cell has shown infinity memory time.

  • This paper addresses a fuzzy controller for nonlinear systems control using a pole placement in a specified disk. In the method, we linearize a nonlinear plant about nominal operating points and represent it using TS fuzzy model and formulate the controller rules. A feedback control law for a local model is determined using a pole placement in a specified disk(${\alpha}$:center ${\gamma}$:radius} region so that the closed loop system is stable. A nonlinear system can be controlled by combining fuzzy controller with a pole placement scheme which can be used to modify the transient response such as damping ratio and overshoot. A stability of overall fuzzy control system is guaranteed in the Lyapunov sense. Finally, it is shown that the proposed method is feasible through a computer simulation.

  • Inertial Navigation System(INS) provides short-term accurate navigation solution but its error grows with time due to integration characteristics. Meanwhile, Global Positioning System(GPS) provides long-term stable solution but it has poor error characteristics in high dynamic region. So for its synergistic relationship, an integrated INS/GPS systems has been widely used as an advanced navigation system. Generally, two kinds of integration method are used. One is loosely coupled mode which uses GPS-derived position and velocity as measurements in an integrated Kalman filter. The other is tightly coupled one which uses pseudorange and pseudorange rate as Kalman filter measurements. In this paper the system error models and observation models for two kinds of integrated systems are derived, respectively, and their performance are compared through Monte-Carlo simulations.

  • The characteristic equation for regenerative chatter loop including a delay element replaced by a rational function is presented by a linear differential-difference equation, accounting for the dynamics of the AMB controllers, the uncut chip thickness equation and the cutting process as well as the rigid spindle dynamics itself. The chatter stability analysis of a rigid milling spindle suspended by 5-axes active magnetic bearings(AMBs) is also performed to investigate the influences of the damping and stiffness coefficients of AMBs on the chatter free cutting conditions, as they are allowed to vary within the stable region formed by the AMB control gains. Several cutting tests varying the derivative gains of the AMB were performed to investigate the regenerative chatter vibrations, and it was concluded that the theoretical analysis results are in good consistency with the test results.

  • This paper presents the chatter stability lobes of high speed spindle of five-axis machine tools. Using a FEM, we obtained the frequency response function of a spindle and the stability lobes for evaluation of chatter. In addition, this paper suggest FRF using by FEM for the prediction of chatter stable region and critical cutting depth. Therefore, critical cutting depth of is 1.3586mm and X, Y direction's chatter frequency is 901Hz and 900Hz, respectively.

  • The antioxidant activity and the pharmacologically active constituents such as nucleosides and phenolic substancs of Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer (white ginseng powder) treated with gamma irradiation (Rl group) and ethylene oxide fumigation (EO group) were compared with those of non-treated ginseng (control group). High performance liquid chromatograms of nucleosides in three groups were similar with each other. The bathochromic effect of phenolic substances at W absorption region tends to be higher for EO group than Rl group. This tendency was also observed in heat treatment of each group. However, the antioxidant activity may have some effects on the labile property of phenolic substances. In summary the gamma-irradiated ginseng was more stable than the ethylene oxide-treated ginseng, but both ginseng samples gave the similar antioxidant activity.

  • Controlled reduction of silver alkylcarbamate complexes with hydrogen gas was investigated as a facile synthetic method for high concentrations of silver nanocolloids in organic solvent. Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was used to stabilize the silver colloids obtained from the chemical reduction. To determine optimum conditions for preparation of the stable and controlled silver colloids with the narrowest particle size and distribution, a large number of experiments were carried out involving variations in the concentrations of the silver 2-ethylhexylcarbamate (Ag-EHCB) complex, PVP, and 2-propanol. The initial colloid had a mean particle diameter between 5$\sim$50 nm, as measured by transmission electron microscopy, and exhibited a sharp absorption band in the UV region with a maximum size near 420 nm. After treatment with a reducing agent, the colloids were characterized by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy.

  • This paper describes a method for the preparation of porous polymethylmethacrylate showing optical reflectivity from the porous silicon template. A porous polymethylmethacrylate showing optical reflectivity was prepared by replicating porous silicon template which was obtained by applying a computer-generated periodic square current density and resulted in a mirror with high reflectivity in a specific narrow spectral region. A porous polymethylmethacrylate showing an excellent reflectivity was successfully obtained by dissolving the Porous silicon template from the porous polymethylmethacrylate composite film. A porous polymethylmethacrylate exhibited a sharp reflection resonance in the reflectivity spectrum. Surface image of the porous polymethylmethacrylate indicated that the surface of the porous polymethylmethacrylate film had a porous structure. These porous polymethylmethacrylate films in aqueous solutions were stable for several days without any degradation.

  • If one can find a control Lyapunov function (CLF) for a given nonlinear system, the control input stabilizing the system can be easily obtained. To find a CLF, the time derivative of an energy function should be negative definite. This procedure frequently requires a control input which is a rational function or includes an inverse function. The control input is not defined on the specific state-space where the denominator of the rational function is equal to 0 or the inverse function does not exist. In this region with singularities, the trajectory of the control system cannot be generated, which is one of the most important reasons why it is hard to make the origin of a nonlinear system be globally asymptotically stable. In this paper, we propose a smooth control law ensuring the globally asymptotic stability by means of cancelling the singularity in the control input.

  • In this paper, an EMM(Equivalent Mechanical Model) Is developed to explain the voltage collapse mechanism by reflecting the effects of reactive powers. The proposed EMM exactly represents the voltage instability mechanism described by the system equations. By the use of the EMM model, the voltage collapse mechanism has been illustrated by showing the exactness of the results. The stable region has been investigated with a reactive-power-controlled two-bus system, which shows that special alerts are required when the system operates with leading power factor. It is also discussed a system transform technique to eliminate the resistance component of the Thevenin equivalent impedance for practical applications. Finally, the results adopting the proposed method fur sample systems which were transformed are listed
