  • In order to investigate the stabilizing effect of piles against sliding, a series of model tests were carried out. The model apparatus was designed to perform the model test of slope reinforced by stabilizing piles. The instrumentation system was used to measure the deflection of stabilizing piles during slope failure. The stabilizing effect of the piles in a row with some interval ratio is larger than the isolated pile without interval ratio. Because the prevention force of piles in a row increased due to the soil arching effect between piles during slope failure. Especially, the maximum value of prevention ratio was presented at 0.5 of interval ratio. If the required prevention ratio is 1.1, the interval ratio must be installed from 0.5 to 0.8. Also, the stabilizing effect of piles against sliding is excellent at the interval ratio between 0.5 and 0.8. This value can be proposed as the criterion of the interval ratio between piles against slope failure.

  • Bioactivity of the extract from various processed garlic was evaluated based on the inhibition of lipoxygenase(LPO), and the effect of some stabilizers on the bioactivity was investigated. Water, ethanol or chloroform extract of 30 min boiled garlic showed 75%, 76% or 70% inhibition, respectively, compared to extracts of fresh garlic. In pickled garlic, LPO inhibition decreased gradually during storage. Chloroform extract of 40 day-stored pickled garlic inhibited LPO by 77%, and even on 60th day storage it still retained inhibitory effect of 73%, compared to that of fresh garlic. Meanwhile, the powdered (freeze-dried) garlic showed more bioactivity(80%) than the other processed garlics, and moreover, the jrreversible/unstable components seem to be stabilized by freeze-drying. The optimum pH for stabilization of bioactive components in garlic macerate was pH 3 for 48 hr incubation and pH 11 for 6 hr incubation. In addition, the effect of NaCl was not so great, although but maximal stabilization was observed at 150 mM. Stabilizing effect of $\alpha$-tocopherol was markedly great, and at 6mM it showed 308% stabilizing effect after 48hr incubation. More stabilizing effect was observed at lower concentrations of ascorbic acid($\leq$0.6mM) than higher concentrations. The stabilizing effect of soybean oil was found to be remarkable only during initial period(6 hr) of incubation.

  • In the case of excavating ground backfilled with soft ground, ground destruction occurs owing to the discharge of groundwater from excavated back ground in spite of earth retaining wall. To minimize this, indoor model test was implemented applying stabilizing pile as a solution for ground destruction. The unreinforced case was compared with the reinforced case and the comparison demonstrated that the ratio of the gap in settlement of the two cases is about three to one, which proves the reinforcement effect (Kim, 2014). This study has carried out the evaluation of appropriate pile spacing ratio, according to the confirmed effect of stabilizing pile. In the evaluation test the case with pile spacing ratio of 0.66 (5 stabilizing piles) was compared with that of 0.76 (3 stabilizing piles), and it has been shown that applying stabilizing pile has effect on ground destruction reduction, but may rather work as load when pile spacing ratio is narrower than a certain interval. So it was found that adjustment for appropriate pile spacing ratio is required at the stage of design. This study has shown that the pile spacing ratio is appropriate at around 0.7~0.8, which reduces ground destruction and does not function as the load of excavated back ground.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate trunk and gluteal muscle activation during one-leg standing or two-leg standing with lumbar stabilizing taping using non-elastic tape. Method: The subjects of this study were twenty subjects(man=11, women=9) who be in good physical health and have not problem to back muscle and one leg standing. The surface electromyographic(EMG) data were recorded on external oblique(EO), gluteus medius(GMed), gluteus maximus(GMax), quadratus lumborum(QL) while pre- and post-lumbar stabilizing taping in two-leg standing and one-leg standing. The analysis of data was performed using the paired samples t-test to compare the difference of EMG activity of pre and post lumbar stabilizing taping. Result: Contrast of pre-lumbar stabilizing taping the muscle activity of QL in post-lumbar stabilizing taping is significant decrease on two-leg standing posture(p<.05), and the muscle activity of GMed is significant increase on one-leg standing posture(p<.05). Thus, we suggest that lumbar stabilizing taping using by functional tape will be able to affect on lumbar stability and gluteal muscle retraining.

  • PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of a combined non elastic taping and lumbar stabilizing exercise against lumbar stabilizing exercise only during the lumbar stabilizing exercise in chronic low back pain. METHOD: Thirty-one patients of low back pain were randomly allocated to 2 groups: lumbar stabilizing exercise group (n=16) and nonelastic taping group(n=15) with lumbar stabilizing exercise. Taping and stabilizing exercise were performed twice a week for 4 weeks. The patients were assessed using by visual analog scale (VAS) and Korean version of Oswestry disability index (KODI). The measurements of each patients were measured before the intervention and 2 weeks post-experiment and 4weeks after the intervention. All data were analyzed using by SPSS 12.0 software for Window, the experimental data was analyzed using by paired samples t-test and repeated ANOVA. All statistical tests in this study were conducted at the .05 level of significance. RESULTS: The results of this study are in the nonelastic taping group, significant difference were found in th VAS between pre-test and post-test (p<.05). In addition, there were significant differences in the VAS between the two groups at post-test(p<.05). And in the nonelastic taping group, significant difference were found in the KODI between pre-test and post-test (p<.05). However, there were no significant differences in the KODI between the two groups at post-test (p<.05). CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that combination of nonelastic taping and lumbar stabilizing exercise is more effective for low back pain than stabilizing exercise alone. In conclusion, this study indicates that stabilizing exercise combined with nonelastic taping would be recommended in the clinic.

  • The effect of the passive anti-rolling tanks(ART) decreases when the roll period of the vessel does not match the designed oscillating period of the fluid in the tank. In order to improve the effect of the passive ART, the damping plates are installed in the lower duct of the ART to adjust the oscillating period of the fluid. The effects of the damping plates on the oscillating period of the fluid and the changes of the stabilizing moments are examined through the series of bench tests. Acryl model tank larger than 1m breadth is made to minimize the viscous effect of the tank and the stabilizing moments of the tank are measured for various roll angles. Using the obtained tank damping coefficient, RAO(Response Amplitude Operator) value in the resonance range is computed and the stabilizing effect of a ART has been estimated.

  • During the last few decades in Korea, the development of hillside or mountain areas has rapidly increased for infrastructure construction such as railroads, highways and housing. Many landslides have occurred during these constructions. Also, the amount and scale of damage caused by landslides have increased every year. In the case of Far East Asia including Korea, the damage of landslides is consequently reported during the wet season. In this paper, the effect of stabilizing piles on slope stability is checked and the behavior of slope soil and piles are observed throughout the year by field measurements in the large-scale cut slopes. In particular a large-scale cut slope situated on the construction site for the express highway in Donghae, Korea. First of all, The behavior of the slope soil was measured by inclinometers during slope modification. Landslides occurred in this area due to the soil cutting for slope modification. The horizontal deformations of slope soil gradually increased and rapidly decreased at depth of sliding surface indicating that the depth of sliding surface below the ground surface can be predicted. On the basis of being able to predict the depth of the sliding surface, stabilizing piles were designed and constructed in this slope. To ensure the stability of the reinforced slope using stabilizing piles, an instrumentation system was installed. The maximum deflection of piles is measured at the pile head and it is noted that the piles deform like deflection on a cantilever beam. The maximum bending stress of piles is measured at the soil layer. The pile above the soil layer is subjected to lateral earth pressure due to driving force of the slope, while pile below soil layer is subjected to subgrade reaction against pile deflection. As a result of research, the effect and applicability of stabilizing piles in large-scale cut slopes could be confirmed sufficiently.

  • It is a critical problem of the Busan container cargo market that serious competition between the north port terminal and the new port terminal is weakening port of Busan's competitiveness. To avoid this serious competition, Busan Port Authority(BPA) has executed a cargo-rate approval system from last year. However if Busan's container terminal operators do not accept this system, the execution performance will be insufficient. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to test the effect of cargo-rate approval in the Busan container cargo market. To attain this research purpose, the current situation was analyzed and the existing papers were investigated. Therefore, cargo-stabilizing factors were extracted and the moderated effect between these factors and cargo-rate approval was tested. The results are as follows. First, three cargo stabilizing factors-(market structure, market behavior, and BPA)-appear to have a strong positive impact on the stabilizing effect; however, the factors that are handled by the operators can not influence the stabilizing effect. In particular, market behavior factors, such as cargo-rate dumping restriction, contributed to stabilizing cargo market. Second, The results appear to have a strong positive impact on the moderated effect as well as the cargo-rate approval. These research results show that the execution of cargo-rate approval is important in stabilizing the cargo market. Therefore, stabilizing the cargo market will contrubute to improving the image and bargaining power of the Port of Busan.

  • To confirm the stability of a cut slope in the road extension construction site, several investigations were carried out and countermeasures of slope was studied. This paper describes a study of design case of extra reinforcement on existing cut slope reinforced by preloading and piles in roads. To investigate the effect of stabilizing piles installed in a cut slope, an instrumentation system also designed, was. As a result that the stabilizing file and earth anchor are considered as the extra reinforcement, both stabilizing pile and earth anchor guarantee the stability of cut slope. However, stabilizing pile is selected in aspects of economy and continuity to the existing cut slop reinforcement including counterweight fill and stabilizing piles.

  • Maintenance of polymorphism in a two-locus system with two alleles under stabilizing selection has been tested by Monte-Carlo simulation. The effect of each allele was additive. Only gene x environment interactions and degree of genetic linkage between loci were considered. There were no other evolutionary forces acting except stabilizing selection. Fixation rates were influenced by the extent of environmental change and the degree of genetic linkage. In most cases, stabilizing selection depleted genetic variability when two loci have a lower degree of linkage (10 cM). When two loci are closely linked (0.1 cM), however, stabilizing selection promoted balanced heterozygotes in changing environments. Thus, environment-dependent selection and recombination rate are important parameters which should be incorporated into mechanisms of maintenance of genetic variability.
