  • This paper proposes an optimal load shedding algorithm by which the system loss can be minimized when the load shedding is unavoidable in case of severe contingency such as the outage of key generators or lines. Shedding load .DELTA.S = .DELTA.P + J.DELTA.Q(MVA) is performed on the weakest bus (on the view of voltage stability), step by step, by the priority of the I.DELTA. = SQRT(.lambda.$\_$P/$\^$2/ + .lambda.$\_$Q/$\^$2/) index given for each load bus, where .lambda.$\_$P/ and .lambda.$\_$Q/ are the sensitivity indices representing the system loss variation versus active and reactive power change of the bus load bus. All loads are assumed to be constant power loads for convenience. A 5 bus sample system proves the effectiveness of the algorithm proposed.

  • This paper presents a new eigenvalue sensitivity analysis method based on AESOPS algorithm. The additional calculation steps are derived from the original AESOPS algorithm. The additional calculation steps are performed directly from the AESOPS algorithm after iteratively calculating electro-mechanical oscillation modes in small signal stability problems. Owing to the structural characteristics of partitioned sub-matrix of state space equations, the partial differentiation terms of system state matrix for obtaining eigenvalue sensitivity indices can be calculated very simply. By the method presented in this paper, the AESOPS algorithm can be used in controller design problem as well as analysis of small signal stability problem.

  • Rigid polyurethane foams (RPUFs) were fabricated from crude MDI (CMDI) and polypropylene glycols (PPGs) of various isocyanate indices with a physical blowing agent (HFC 365mfc). There was a tendency for the gel time to decrease and the tack-free time to increase with increasing index value. With increasing index value the foam density and compression strength decreased and the glass transition temperature, dimension stability and thermal insulation increased, while the cell size and closed cell content were virtually unchanged. Allophanate crosslinks and condensation reactions between the isocyanate groups, which are favored with a high index value, exerted significant effects on the properties of RPUFs.

  • A reliability based slope stability assessment method is proposed and examined considering the variation of matric suction which is measured by a real time slope monitoring system. Mean value first order reliability method and advanced first order reliability method are used to calculate reliability indices of a slope. The applicability of methods is compared by applying them to the range of matric suctions measured by the real-time monitoring system. Sensitivity analysis is also performed to examine the contribution of random variables to the reliability index of slope. Finally, the proposed method is applied to a model slope. The results show that the reliability index of slope can be used for efficient slope management by quantifying the risk of slope in real time.

  • Data composite methods have been typically applied to satellite-based vegetation index(VI) data to continuously acquire vegetation greenness over the land surface. Data composites are useful for construction of long-term archives of vegetation indices by minimizing missing data or contamination from noise. In addition, if multi-sensor vegetation indices that are acquired during the same composite periods are used interchangeably, data stability and continuity may be significantly enhanced. This study evaluated the influences of sensor geometry on MODIS vegetation indices and investigated data compatibility of two difference vegetation indices, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI) and the Enhanced Vegetation Index(EVI), for potential improvement of long-term data construction. Relationships between NDVI and EVI turned out statistically significant with variations among vegetation covers. Due to their curvilinear relationships, NDVI became saturated and leveled off as EVI reached high ranges. Correlation coefficients between Terra- and Aqua-based vegetation indices ranged from 0.747 to 0.963 for EVI, and from 0.641 to 0.880 for NDVI, showing better compatibility for EVI compared to NDVI. In-depth analyses of VI outliers that deviated from regression equations constructed from the two different sensors remain as a future study to improve their compatibility.

  • The community structure of benthic macroinvertebrates in the Madongho Wetland protected area and inflow river located in Goseong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, was investigated in 2022 and 2023. We collected and identified 3,582 individuals belonging to 7 classes, 23 orders, 51 families, and 78 species over the 2 years from six sites. Gnorimosphaeroma naktongense was the dominant species with a ratio of 20%, and Caridina denticulata denticulata was the subdominant species with a ratio of 13.32%. Predators and gathering collectors were the most abundant in the functional feeding group, while sprawlers were the most diverse and numerous in the habitual dwelling group. Diversity, richness, dominance, and evenness were calculated as the biological indices. In addition, various biological water quality indices were calculated. Most insects in the inflow rivers belonged to group I in evaluating relative resistance and resilience, showing high colony stability. The results of analyzing the correlation between salinity and substrate particle size with brackish water species showed that Gnorimosphaeroma naktongense and Hediste japonica had a significant positive correlation with salinity, while Assiminea lutea and Neomysis awatschensis had a significant positive correlation with substrate particle size. Additionally, Sinelobus kisui was found to be a new record of Korean Tanaididae in this study.

  • Due to the low strength and high compressibility characteristics, the loess deposits tunnels are prone to large deformations and collapse. An accurate stability evaluation for loess deposits is of considerable significance in deformation control and safety work during tunnel construction. 37 groups of representative data based on real loess deposits cases were adopted to establish the stability evaluation model for the tunnel project in Yan'an, China. Physical and mechanical indices, including water content, cohesion, internal friction angle, elastic modulus, and poisson ratio are selected as index system on the stability level of loess. The data set is randomly divided into 80% as the training set and 20% as the test set. Firstly, principal component analysis (PCA) is used to convert the five index system to three linearly independent principal components X1, X2 and X3. Then, the principal components were used as input vectors for probabilistic neural network (PNN) to map the nonlinear relationship between the index system and stability level of loess. Furthermore, Leave-One-Out cross validation was applied for the training set to find the suitable smoothing factor. At last, the established model with the target smoothing factor 0.04 was applied for the test set, and a 100% prediction accuracy rate was obtained. This intelligent classification method for loess deposits can be easily conducted, which has wide potential applications in evaluating loess deposits.

  • Fundamental combustion characteristics, such as the combustion potential, burning velocity and flame stability, for the practical utilization of LFG(Landfill gas) and LFG-blended fuels were experimentally investigated. The combustion potentials(CP) of LFG-blended fuels calculated from the previously suggested formulae were compared with burning velocities obtained by present experiments. The results showed that the previous formulae fur CP of LFG-blended fuels were not agreed with the experimental burning velocity, and these formulae should be revised. To provide an useful information needed to design the combustion devices, a triangular diagram was suggested for the maximum burning velocity of the mixture of CH$_4$, LPG and LFG. From the investigation of the burning velocity and the flame stability in a practical combustor, it was noted that the LFG-blended fuels, of which heating values or Wobbe indices were adjusted to that of natural gas, could be used as an alternative fuel of natural gas.

  • Determinations of the compositioin ofl chinoform metal chelates by elemental analysis and molar ratio method showed that the ratios of the ligand to metals in chinoform Cu(II) chelate, chinofrm Ni (II) chelate, and chinoform CO(II) chelate were 2:1 respectively and that the ratio in chinoform Fe(III) chelate was 3:1. It was found that diffe rential thermal values vary with the center metalic ions and that the thermal stability was in anorder of Fe>Cu>Co>Ni. The indices of over-all stability constant of chinoform Cu(II) chelate, Ni(II) chelate, Co(II) chelate, and Fe(III) chelate were 15.57, 15.16, 15.40 and 20.76, respectively, and the over-all stability was in an order of Fe>Cu>Co>Ni. The tests of the natibacterial activity in vitro of the chinoform metal chelates against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC G538, Pseudomonas aeruginosa 2131, Serratia marcescens 3357, Klebsiella pneumoniae 8899, Enterococcus 3309, Streptococcus pyogenes 507, and Escherichia coli 125 showed that the Cu(II) chelate generally had greater activity than chinoform, that it had four-fold activity particularly against Streptococcus pyogenes 507 and Staphylococcus awreus ATCC 6538, that the Ni(II) and Co(II) chelates had almost same activity, and that the Fe chelate had strong activity against Escherichia coli 125.

  • Decomposition of compost applied to soils is affected basically by its biological stability; but, many other chemical properties of the compost may also influence compost organic-C mineralization. This study was conducted to investigate the principal substrate quality factors of composts that determine C mineralization of compost with similar stability degree (SD). Three composts samples with similar SD but different chemical properties such as pH, C/N, $K_2SO_4$-extractable C, and molar ratio of $NH_4^+$ to $NO_3^-$ were mixed with an acid loamy soil and $CO_2$ emission was monitored during the laboratory incubation for 100 days. Temporal pattern of cumulative compost organic-C mineralization expressed as % of total organic C ($C_{%\;TOC}$) followed double exponential first order kinetics model and the $C_{%\;TOC}$ ranged from 4.8 to 11.8% at the end of incubation. The pattern of C%TOC among the composts was not coincident with the SD pattern (40.1 to 58.6%) of the composts; e.g. compost with the lowest SD resulted in the least $C_{%\;TOC}$ and vice versa. This result indicates that SD of compost can not serve as a concrete predictor of compost mineralization as SD is subject not only to maturity of compost but also to characteristics of co-composting materials such as rice hull (low SD) and sawdust (high SD). Meanwhile, such pattern of $C_{%\;TOC}$ collaborated with pH, C/N, $K_2SO_4$-extractable C, and molar ratio of $NH_4^+$ to $NO_3^-$ of the composts that are regarded as chemical indices of the progress of composting. Therefore, for better prediction of compost mineralization in soils, it is necessary to consider both SD and other chemical indices (pH, C/N, and molar ratio of $NH_4^+$ to $NO_3^-$).
