This paper presents an experimental investigation of the flexural behavior of square hollow steel section (HSS) beams subjected to pure bending. Totally six unfilled and nine ultra high performance concrete (UHPC)-filled HSS beams were tested under four-point bending until failure. The effects of the steel tube thickness, the yield strength of the steel tube and the strength of concrete on moment capacity, curvature, and ductility of UHPC-filled HSS beams were examined. The performance indices named relative ductility index (RDI) and strength increasing factor (SIF) were investigated with regard to different height-to-thickness ratio of the specimens. The flexural strengths obtained from the tests were compared with the values predicted by Eurocode 4, AISC-LRFD and CIDECT design codes. The results showed that the increase in the moment capacity and the corresponding curvature is much greater for thinner HSS beams than thicker ones. Eurocode 4 and AISC-LRFD predict the ultimate moment capacity of the all UHPC-filled HSS beams conservatively.

Ball rolling blending is a popular technique for blending between parametric surfaces. The ball rolling blend surface is conceptually a trajectory of a ball rolling between two base sufaces. It is constructed by sweeping a circular arc along a ball contact curve pair. Since a ball rolling blend surfaces does not have a polynomial form like a Bezier surface patch, it is impossible to apply this method directly to a commercial CAD/CAM system. In this paper an algorithm is developed to approximate a ball rolling blend surface into Bezier surface patches. Least square method is applied to obtain proper Bezier surface patches under a given tolerance. The Bezier surface patches have degree three or more and guarantee VC1-continuity.

In this paper, a novel design method of variable motor inertia in Induction motor drive system is proposed. The inertia of a load and a motor are estimated by using RLS (Recursive Least Square) algorithm. The speed controller is designed by Kharitonov theory of motor. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is verified with simulation and experiment results.
It is very important to obtain the knowledge of loads and flow patterns in most processes because these information are the fundamental data of die design and process design. The objective of present study is to investigate loads and metal flow patterns for various process conditions in flat die extrusion of square-bars from circular billets. For analyzing the metal flow patterns of the billets photo etching is used on sections of split specimen. From this method metal flow patterns are analyzed for various area reductions friction factors and punch stroke through the process from initial-stage to final-stage. Experiments are carried out with hard solder billets at room temperature.

Using wind tunnel, experimental approaches were employed to investigate fluidelastic instability of tube bundles, subjected to uniform cross flow. There are several flow-induced vibration excitation mechanisms, such as fluidelastic instability, periodic wake shedding resonance, turbulence-induced excitation and acoustic resonance, which could cause excessive vibration in shell-and tube heat exchanges. Fluidelastic is the most important vibration excitation mechanism for heat exchanger tube bundles subjected to cross flow. The system comprised of cantilevered flexible cylinder(s) and rigid cylinders of normal square array, In order to see the characteristics of flow in tube bundles, particle image velocimetry was used. From a practical design point of view, Fluidelastic instability may be expressed simply in terms of dimensionless flow velocity and dimensionless mass-damping. The threshold flow velocity for dynamic instability of cylinder rows is evaluated and the data for design guideline is proposed for the tube bundles of normal square array.

Perforation and cutouts of structures are compulsory in some modern applications such as in heat exchangers, nuclear power plants, filtration and microeletromicanical system (MEMS). This perforation complicates dynamic analyses of these structures. Thus, this work tends to introduce semi-analytical model capable of investigating the dynamic performance of perforated beam structure under free and forced conditions, for the first time. Closed forms for the equivalent geometrical and material characteristics of the regular square perforated beam regular square, are presented. The governing dynamical equation of motion is derived based on Euler-Bernoulli kinematic displacement. Closed forms for resonant frequencies, corresponding Eigen-mode functions and forced vibration time responses are derived. The proposed analytical procedure is proved and compared with both analytical and numerical analyses and good agreement is noticed. Parametric studies are conducted to illustrate effects of filling ratio and the number of holes on the free vibration characteristic, and forced vibration response of perforated beams. The obtained results are supportive in mechanical design of large devices and small systems (MEMS) based on perforated structure.
This study presents a numerical investigation into the hysteretic behavior of cold-formed austenitic stainless steel square hollow section (SHS) brace members using a commercial finite element (FE) analysis software ABAQUS/Standard. The initial/post buckling and fracture life of SHS brace members are comprehensively investigated through parametric studies with FE models incorporating ductile fracture model, which is validated against the existing laboratory test results collected from the literature. It is found that the current predictive models are applicable for the initial buckling strengths of SHS brace members under cyclic loading, while result in significant inaccuracy in predictions for the post-buckling strength and fracture life. The modified predictive model is therefore proposed and the applicability was then confirmed through excellent comparisons with test results for cold-formed austenitic stainless SHS brace members.

The transient analysis for the output voltage of a piezoresistive microaccelerometer takes a relatively high computation time because at least two iterations are required to calculate the piezoresistive-structural coupled response at each time step. In this study, the high computational cost for calculating the transient output voltage is considerably reduced by an approach integrating the mode superposition method and the least square method. In the approach, data on static displacement and output voltage calculated by piezoresistive-structural coupled simulation for three acceleration inputs are used to develop a quadratic regression model, relating the output voltage to the displacement at a certain observation point. The transient output voltage is then approximated by a regression model using the displacement response cheaply calculated by the mode superposition method. A high-impact microaccelerometer subject to several types of acceleration inputs such as 100,000 G shock, sine, step, and square pulses are adopted as a numerical example to represent the efficiency and accuracy of the suggested approach.
While extensive efforts have been made in the past to develop finite element models (FEMs) for concrete-filled steel tubular columns (CFSTCs), these models may not be suitable to be used in some cases, especially in view of the utilisation of high strength steel and high strength concrete. A method is presented herein to predict the complete stress-strain curve of concrete subjected to tri-axial compressive stresses caused by axial load coupled with lateral pressure due to the confinement action in square and rectangular CFSTCs with normal and high strength materials. To evaluate the lateral pressure exerted on the concrete in square and rectangular shaped columns, an accurately developed FEM which incorporates the effects of initial local imperfections and residual stresses using the commercial program ABAQUS is adopted. Subsequently, an extensive parametric study is conducted herein to propose an empirical equation for the maximum average lateral pressure, which depends on the material and geometric properties of the columns. The analysis parameters include the concrete compressive strength ($f^{\prime}_c=20-110N/mm^2$), steel yield strength ($f_y=220-850N/mm^2$), width-to-thickness (B/t) ratios in the range of 15-52, as well as the length-to-width (L/B) ratios in the range of 2-4. The predictions of the behaviour, ultimate axial strengths, and failure modes are compared with the available experimental results to verify the accuracy of the models developed. Furthermore, a design model is proposed for short square and rectangular CFSTCs. Additionally, comparisons with the prediction of axial load capacity by using the proposed design model, Australian Standard and Eurocode 4 code provisions for box composite columns are carried out.

This paper describes a design of LNS-based divider and square-root circuits which are key arithmetic units in graphic processor and digital signal processor. To achive area-efficient and low-power that is an essential consideration for mobile environment, a fixed-point format of 16.16 is adopted instead of conventional floating-point format. The designed divider and square-root units consist of binary-to-logarithm converter, subtractor, logarithm-to-binary converter. The binary to logarithm converter is designed using combinational logic based on six regions approximation method. As a result, gate count reduction is obtained when compared with conventional lookup approack. The designed units is 3,130 gate count and 1,280 gate count. To minimize average percent error 3.8% and 4.2%. error compensation method is employed.
