Coastal dune, as one part of beach system, contributes for beach recovery as well as preventing beach erosion by exchanging sands between beach and dune. Due to high tidal range, the boundary of sand dunes on the west coast of Korean Peninsula is outside the high water line during spring tide and erosion also occurs in high waves during spring high tide. This paper investigates the erosion status of the dunes located in the JangHang beach by analyzing images from camera monitoring system, and tide and wave data observed adjacent to the study site during the passage of 4 typhoons in 2012. It also studies the benefits of camera monitoring images in investigating the dune erosion and analyzing coastal topographic changes.

The Port of Pyeong Taek is located on the west coast, meaning that the difference between the rise and fall of tide is great (flood tide 1.8 to 2.9 knots, ebb tide 1.6 to 2.9 knots). Due to mainly N~NW'ly strong winds & high waves during winter, navigating as well as loading & discharging vessels must focus on cargo handling. The strong tidal and wind forces in the Port of Pyeong Taek can push an LNG carrier away from its berth, which will end up causing forced disconnection between the vessel's cargo line and shore-side loading arm. The primary consequence of this disconnection will be LNG leakage, which will lead to tremendous physical damage to the hull and shore-side equipment. In this study, the 125K LNG Moss Type ship docked at No. 1 Pier of the Pyeong Taek is observed, and the tension of the mooring line during cargo handling is calculated using a combination of wind and waves to determine effective mooring line and mooring line priority management. As a result if the wind direction is $90^{\circ}$ to the left and right of the bow, it was found that line monitoring should be performed bearing special attention to the Fore Spring Line, Fore Breast Line, and Aft Spring Line.
During period of the rainy season of spring tide Aug. 2005, the suspended sediment transport rate from Seomjin River increased ten times as high as neap tide of low river discharge. During ebb tide of high terrestrial input, the grain size of suspended particles of both surface and bottom layer of the water column, showed a uni-modal distribution with a dominant peak at coarse fraction, which suggests a characteristic development of floc-sized particles of low mean effective density. On the contrary, the particles supplied toward upstream of Seomjin river from Gwangyang Bay during flood tide showed a bi-modal distribution with a secondary peak at finer fraction, possibly due to the resuspension and the deflocculation associated with the increased shear velocity at near bottom. Break-up of large flocs is also suggested by the increased mean effective density. However, settling velocity was lower during flood tide because of smaller grain size. Thus, net deposition of suspended sediment is expected at within Gwangyang Bay instead of upstream of Seomjin River, even though suspended sediment transport rate at near bottom water was three times higher than that at surface water during flood tide.
In order to see the stratification related to the heat flux In Deukryang Bay, the oceanographic data on July 12, 1994 and the meteorological data of Kohung and Kwangju meteorological stations were analysed. The temperature durerences between the sea surface and the near bottom were 1~3 ton spring tide (July 12, 1994) In Deukryang Bay. The temperature anomalies were high about 3t during summer In 1994. These mean that the non mixing was not effective In destroying the stratification due to the sea surface heating by the solar radition, even though it was on spring tide. The maximum solar radiation was about 600 ly/day, which was the value of the same date of oceanographic observation. The sensible and the latent heat flux which are 0~100 ly/day were not so varied during summer. The absorbed heat flux through the sea surface was mostly lost by the back radiation. which ranges are about 0~-400 ly/day. The dimensionless mixing parameter related to the buoyancy flux was 5~150$\times$$10^{-5}$. The efficiency of tidal mixing to destroy the stratecation was 0.4~0.6%.
Sledge net samples were taken over the neap and spring tide cycles in January 1993 from the bottom and surface of 1 m depth and at the water's edge in the sandy shore surf zone of Dolsando, southern Korea. Zonation pattern of three dominant gammarid amphipods was compared. The amphipods were more abundant on the bottom and at water's edge than in the surface. Average densities at both sites of Pontogeneia rostrata and Allorchestes angusta were higher during the neap tide than the spring tide, whereas that of Synchelidium lenorostralum was lower during the neap tide. P. rostrata migrated horizontally during the flooding and ebbing tides, but S. lenorostralum and A. angusta did not. Unlike other species, P. rostrata was significantly more abundant at night, suggesting its active nocturnal movement. During flooding tide, P. rostrata was not found on the shore above the mean sea level (MSL) during daytime, but found in 100 cm above MSL at night. Zonal distribution of P. rostrata which was restricted from MSL to 250 cm below MSL, however, did not vary with the day-night cycle during ebbing tide. S. lenorostralum and A. angusta were not found during flooding tide but ebbing tide. The upper distribution limit of the former was 150 cm below MSL, and the distribution of the latter ranged from MSL to 150 cm below MSL. The highest densities of P. rostrata, S. lenorostralum and A. angusta were 32, 26 and 3 ind. $m^{-2}$, respectively. We discussed the relationships between the distribution pattern of three dominant species of gammarid amphipods and their life styles in the sandy shore.
Frequently , large masses of the young short necked clam, Tapes japonica , die at their tidal flats in summer and this phenomenon has not been explained clearly. The purpose of the present investigation is to study the thermal condition and the chlorinity level of tidal flats in which the young clam appears to be injured. A study is also mad efor the burrowing organism in the lower layer of the esturay over which the fresh water flow during the low tide. Observation are made at five places of the tidal flat near Ikawazu Fixheries Laboratory of Tokyo University during the ebb and flow tide period of the spring tide. The diurnal and monthly changes of tidal temperatures and chlorinities are measured. Results of the study are ; 1. The surface temperature of the tidal flat increases with the ebb tide, reaches the highest between 12-14PM, and gradually decreases thereafter. The temperatures of tidal flat below 5 and 10 cm increase gradually until the flow tide reaches the surface. 2. At the spring tide in summer , the diurnal change of surface of the tidal flat temperature is very extensive ; it reaches 37-39$^{\circ}C$ in August. At the depths of 5 and 10 cm the temperature remains at 33 $^{\circ}C$ and 31$^{\circ}C$ , respectively. 3. The chlorinity of the tidal flat is higher during May through June and lower July through August, and this seems to be related to the amount of rainfall. 4. The chlorinity of the surface of tidal flat increases slightly during the ebb and flow tide periods. The observed higher chlorinity of surface of the tidal flat was 18.82% Cl. 5. At near the esturay, the fresh water that overflows the tidal flat affects the chlorinity of the surface but no such influence to the depth of the flat. 6. From above observations, it is assumed that the young short necked clam in the tidal flat could be exposed to the severe change of environmental conditions. The high temperature of the tidal flat in summer and the low chlorinity of it at flood period may be considered as the change in environment.
We conducted a year-long survey in 2000 to examine seasonal fluctuations in the abundance of the demersal copepod Pseudodiaptomus sp., the dominant copepod in the Seomjin River estuary, where the spring tide strongly affects changes in salinity gradients. Pseudodiaptomus sp. was found throughout the year in the entire range of salinities measured, but most individuals appeared at oligohaline conditions below 5.0 psu, and less than $2\%$ were observed in polyhaline conditions above 18.0 psu. The peak abundance occurred during autumn in oligohaline waters, and the density was relatively low during the rainy season in summer. In spring and autumn, copepodites were most abundant in oligohaline waters, although they were also fairly abundant in mesohaline conditions $(5\~18\;psu)$. Females with egg sacs appeared in oligo- and mesohaline waters during spring and autumn but were seldom found in polyhaline conditions throughout the year. Our results indicate that, despite the strong physical influence of the tide, Pseudodiaptomus sp. can manipulate its position to remain at its preferred salinity. We also found that spawning mainly occurred in oligohaline waters twice a year.
Movement of shorebirds for roosting was studied to find their response to insufficient roosting area on Ganghwa Island. It was taken from two kinds of aspects of population fluctuation and direct observation of movement from March to October in 2002. Based on the data from their weekly fluctuation and flight observation, shorebirds on Ganghwa Island moved to roosts located far away. Shorebirds feeding at southern Ganghwa Island moved to Yeongjong Island for roosting during the spring tide period. High tide count showed that the number of shorebirds on Yeongjong Island increased strikingly, while the number of birds on Ganghwa Island decreased. As the tide level increased, the number of shorebirds on Ganghwa Island decreased in the fall migrating season (r$_{s}$= -0.81, p<0.001), whereas that on Yeongjong Island was not correlated significantly. Direct observation showed that some of the birds on the upper tidal zone of Ganghwa Island moved directly to the northern mudflat of Yeongjong Island during the flowing tide or dropped by flat zone on Seondu-ri. Insufficient coastal wetlands on Ganghwa Island induced them to move away from the island for roosting place and to endure costly flight energy expenditure. The development of wetlands on the southern Yeongjong Island would make them have no place available to roosts. Therefore this study proposes that shorebird roosts on Ganghwa Island should be created to conserve their habitat.t.
To understand the transport of anchovy egg-larvae, an integrated model consisting of a hydrodynamic model and a three-dimensional Lagrangian diffusion model was used for the anchovy Engraulis japornicus egg-larvae trace. Fist, in order to determine the circulation characteristics of the South Sea of Korea, residual flow according to tide, density and wind effect was investigated. In offshore regions, tide-induced residual current tends to flow eastward during the spring tide and westward during the neap tide. Residual flow is irregular due to the bottom topography in the coastal area. No special tendency was apparent in the open sea. Especially, the flow in the offshore regions showed results similar to that of the Tsushima Warm Current. The transport of anchovy egg-larvae is decided the physical properties of sea water. It is estimated that anchovy eggs spawned near the Jeju Island travels offshore, rather than to coastal areas, and grow in the front area between the coastal sea and offshore regions.
The sea water exchange of Koje Bay in the southeastern part of the Korean Peninsula was estimated on the basis of current measurements and oceanographic observation. The exchange ratio was estimated by salinity differences and tidal prism method. The range of exchange ratio at the central part at the entrance of the bay is estimated to be around $26\%$ at spring tide and 5 to $15\%$ at neap tide. The magnitude of exchange ratio, however, can be changed due to water exchange, hydrometeorological and geomorphological conditions. The flushing time deduced by tidal prism was about 48 hours at spring tide and 81 hours at neap tide. Tidal induced eddy motion may play an important role on the seawater exchange in the bay.
