  • To determine the peak dispersal times of allergenic pollen grains in Ulsan, Korea, we performed continuous airborne pollen counts at three stations (Sts. A, B, and C) in Ulsan from August 2009 to November 2010. Pollen grains were sampled using a Durham sampler. Two peak pollen dispersal seasons were observed per year. The peak seasons generally coincided with the flowering period of anemophilous trees: Taxodiaceae (February), Alnus (March), Cupressaceae (April), Quercus, and Pinus (May), and with the flowering phase of herbs from August to November, e.g., Humulus, Artemisia, Gramineae, and Ambrosia from August through September. The highest concentration of airborne pollen was from Pinus (68%), followed by Quercus (15%), Alnus (6%), and Humulus (2%); whereas very low pollen concentrations were from Taxodiaceae, Cupressaceae, Artemisia, Gramineae, and Ambrosia (${\leq}$ 1% of the annual total airborne pollen concentration). Our findings indicate that Alnus and Humulus pollen are major allergens whereas those of Pinus and Quercus are minor allergens. The concentration of Alnus pollen grains at St. C was over five times that at Sts. A and B. This finding implies that individuals living at or near St. C are exposed to high concentrations of Alnus pollen before and after March, which is the flowering period of the alder tree. From August to September, individuals living at or near St. B are exposed to high concentrations of Humulus pollen. Our study suggests that Alnus pollen may be the major aeroallergen causing pollinosis in the spring at St. C and Humulus pollen may be the major aeroallergen in autumn at St. B.

  • Corona Virus Disease 19 pandemic (COVID-19) causes many deaths worldwide, and has enormous impacts on society and economy. The COVID-19 was caused by a new type of coronavirus (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Cornonavirus 2; SARS-CoV-2), which has been found that these viruses can be effectively inactivated by ultraviolet (UV) radiation of 290~315 nm. In this study, 90% inactivation time of the SARS-CoV-2 virus was analyzed using ground observation data from Brewer spectrophotometer at Yonsei University, Seoul and simulation data from UVSPEC for the period of 2015~2017 and 2020. Based on 12:00-13:00 noon time, the shortest virus inactivation time were estimated as 13.5 minutes in June and 4.8 minutes in July/August, respectively, under all sky and clear sky conditions. In the diurnal and seasonal variations, SARS-CoV-2 could be inactivated by 90% when exposed to UV radiation within 60 minutes from 10:00 to 14:00, for the period of spring to autumn. However, in winter season, the natural prevention effect was meaningless because the intensity of UV radiation weakened, and the time required for virus inactivation increased. The spread of infectious diseases such as COVID-19 is related to various and complex interactions of several variables, but the natural inactivation of viruses by UV radiation presented in this study, especially seasonal differences, need to be considered as major variables.

  • This study is focused to analyze the movement of thermal effluent dischargeed from nuclear power plant by season, ebb and flow, and before and after foundation of tide embankment using thermal infrared band image of 28 scenes observed from Landsat from 1987 to 2004, which is the early stage of operation of young-kwang nuclear power plant. In diffusion of thermal effluent discharge by seasons, spring and summer is spreading further than autumn and winter. It is considered to distribute widely mixed with thermal effluent discharge and hot water, which is distributed naturally along the seaside. It is known the fact that tidal currents control the direction of diffusion of thermal effluent discharge by the change of ebb and flow. Namely, it is distributed widely on the Southwest direction along the seaside by tidal currents when ebb and, it is moved widely on the Northeast direction along the seaside by tidal current when flood. However, in the early stage of flood current, the mainstream of thermal effluent discharge is spread on Southwest direction and, the direction is changed on Northeast way when the latter period of flood current. Similarly, in the early stage of ebb current, the mainstream of thermal effluent discharge is spread on Northeast direction and, the direction is changed on Southwest direction when the latter period of ebb current. As the result of comparing to the diffusion pattern of thermal effluent discharge before and after the foundation of seawall, discharged thermal effluent from the drain of plant by the foundation of dike is shown as curved circle pattern on Northeast to West direction from the ending portion of the seawall.

  • Age composition and reproductive period o the shad, Konosirus punctatus, in Cheonsu Bay were determined though analysis of sizi, ane and maturity of fish. Sampses were collected with trap in the bay mouth from May, 1981 to December, 1982. Shads start entering the bay for feeding and spawning in spring when water temperature exceeds 8$^{\circ}C$. They stay in inner part of the bay in summer nad move out to sea in autumn before water trmperature decreasea to 8$^{\circ}C$. Fish grows very rapidly during first summer after birth. Mean lengthes of 1-4 year old fishes were 12.2cm, 15.8cm, 17.6cm and 20.9cm, respectively. The largest and oldrst fish pbserved was 22.0cm long with age 4. Shads of Cheonsu Bay reach maturity at 2 years old at the size greater then 14cm. Data on size and age at first maturityindicate thzt maturity of shad depends on size and not on age. Spawning occurs from late April to late May when water temperature is between 8$^{\circ}C$ and 15$^{\circ}C$.

  • The experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of humidity on the cocoon quality, and 4, 000 lots of cocoon pruduced fot five years in Chin yang, Ha dong, Keo chang, San chung of Kyeong nam, and Sun san, Sang ju, Young poong, An dong of Kyeong buk were analyzed. The results were summarized as follows ; 1. The reelability ration, the bave length, and raw silk ration were decreased with increasing the humidity in mounting time, and it was remarkably observed when the relative humidity was over 80%. 2. With increasing the reelability ration, the bave length, and raw silk ration were increased, and the longer the bave lenger the bave length was the higher raw silk ration obtained. 3. The average reelability ration for five years in autumn-rearing period was higher than that in spring-rearing period, but the bave length and raw silk ratio was on the contrary from the above. 4. The reelability ration of cocoon produced in the mountainous area was higher than that in the field area but the shorter the bave length, the raw silk ration had no significant difference between those.

  • The seasonal dynamics of phytoplankton and trophic state were evaluated weekly at three sites in the Lake Unmoon from May to November 2001. The seasonal succession pattern of phytoplankton community in the Lake Unmoon showed that the dominant species were; i) diatoms during the late spring, ii) dinoflagellates in June, iii) blue green algae, diatoms and dinoflagellates in July, iv) green algae and blue green algae in August, v) blue green algae in September and early November, and vi) diatoms in November. Members of Microcystis were dominant from middle August to late October and members of Aulocoseira appeared as important species in autumn in the Lake Unmoon. The concentration of chlorophyll-a ranged from 2.4 to 23.0 mg ${\cdot}m^{-3}$ (average: 8.6 mg ${\cdot}m^{-3}$) during the study period. Concentrations of total phosphorus were high during the period from July to November with the maximum of 0.028 mg ${\cdot} l^{-1}$. The average N/P ratio was 121, indicating that concentrations of phosphorus may determine the high algal biomass in the Lake Unmoon. Concentrations of silicate were higher in the Lake Unmoon (average value: 10.016 mg ${\cdot}$ l-) than in other lakes (average values: 1.074-4.408 mg ${\cdot}$ l-), suggesting high potential of diatom growth. The average trophic state index in the Lake Unmoon was 52, which was close to eutrophic state, and the trophic state trend was increasing steadily since 1999.

  • Air temperature was continuously measured in hilly pear orchards at 4 sites with elevations of 10, 49, 104 and 253 m above sea level. The mean air temperature, averaged over the 10-month period from August 2001 to June 2002, decreased as the site elevation increased by 0.2$^{\circ}C$ per 100 m. This weak lapse condition was amplified during daytime by sun-slope geometry. But on most days an inversion condition began by sunset and persisted until the next sunrise. During the observation period, daily minimum temperature at the valley bottom was lower than that of the hilltop on 67% of the days, and the average temperature difference was 1.4$^{\circ}C$. Inversion of daily minimum temperature under clear sky conditions was stronger in spring and autumn than in winter with a maximum of 6$^{\circ}C$. Lapse condition was predominant in daily minimum temperature on rainy days, and the lapse rate was strongest in winter.

  • The hormonal requirement suiting micropropagation of Morus alba during any season throughout the year was studied. Sprouting frequency from axillary buds of M. alba was greatly influenced by the time of explant collection, the highest value was achieved when nodal explants were collected at the end of bud dormancy period (late in March) and cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with low concentration (0.5 mg/L) of BAP, kinetin or IBA (85-68%). In addition, they showed higher axillary bud sprouting on growth-regulators-free medium (49%) than others collected in autumn or winter and cultured on medium supplemented with various growth regulators (47-48%). Regardless of that period, young explants with greenish buds collected in summer exhibiting high sprouting frequency (66%) on MS medium supplemented with 0.5 mg/L kinetin and 0.5 mg/L GA3. Shoot multiplication via adventitious bud formation was achieved when the nodal explants were cultured on MS medium supplemented with 2 mg/L BAP and 0.2 mg/L IBA. Further multiplication via nodal explants of in vitro grown shoots was obtained on MS medium supplemented with 0.5 mglL BAP and 0.5 mg/L GA3. While half strength MS medium supplemented with low concentration (0.5 mg/L) of IBA, IAA or 2,4-D stimulated adventitious root formation, IBA was the best. After transfer the plantlets to the soil, acclimatization for three weeks was essential prerequisite for survival in high frequency (92%). Peroxidase activity is related to break of bud dormancy where maximum enzyme activity was detected when the lateral buds were induced to commence growth under field condition (early in spring) or in vitro.

  • Field study on the sporogenesis periods of 16 red algae growing at the intertidal zone of Daesongri was conducted from April 1987 to March 1988, obseuing the occurence of carposporic and tetrasporic fronds. The period of Gloiopeltis furcata was in spring and summer; that of Laurencia intermedia, Laurencia undulata and Rhodymenia intricate in summer; that of Chondria dasyphylla and Hypnea charoides in autumn; that of Carpopeltis affinis, Pachymeniopsis lanceolata, Chondrus ocellatus, Awosorium polyneunm, Gymnogongrus flabelliformis, Gigartina intermedia, Champia parvula and Ceramium paniculatum in summer and autumn. Of the species, G. flabelliiformis, G. intermedia and R. intricate only matured the carposporic phase, and P. telfairiae, H charoides, C. parvula and C. paniculatum did the tetrasporic phase. But the carposporic phase of G. flabelliformis and the tetrasporic phase of C. paniculatum were not occured in Kori area where water temperature was 3 C higher than that in Daesongri. In that area they only matured the other phase. This suggests that the life history is rarely complete in nature and water temperature is a important factor influencing on the sporogenesis. Also it was observed in C. affinis, C. ocellatus and S. latiuscula that the period of one phase is much longer than that of the other phase. But in most of species with both phases, tatrasporic and caropsporic, the former phase appeared a month later than the latter phase. In addition, their biomass became maximum just before sporgenesis, and then gradually decreased with release of reproductive cells.
