  • The plunger speed of solenoid actuator is affected by mass of plunger, magnetic motive force, inductance, and return spring. These factors are not independent but related with each other according to design characteristics of solenoid actuator. So, it is impossible to change the designed value for the purpose of increasing plunger speed. In this study, we have analyzed the characteristics of high-speed solenoid actuator having a non-magnetic ring which plays a role to concentrate the effective magnetic flux into plunger. For more detailed analysis, we have performed FEM analysis and decided the optimal attaching position and length on the guide tube based on these results. And, we proved the propriety of the non-magnetic ring effect by experiments.

  • Nowadays, Vacuum Circuit Breaker(VCB) is used in the most medium voltage level because vacuum has environment-friendly characteristics as well as excellent dielectric strength. In order to elevate the breaking performance, the improvement of vacuum interrupters and the driving mechanism should be proceeded. In this paper, the development of a Permanent Magnet Actuator could replace the mechanical spring mechanism which is the driving mechanism of existing VCB. The holding force and opening characteristics of magnetic actuator are analysed with FEM and the result is verified through experiment.

  • For past decade, medium voltage circuit breakers have used the spring-driven mechanical system for interrupting of electric power. However, these mechanisms have many disadvantages of high power consumption, mechanical control components and electrical switching ones for the coil current. Recently, the vacuum interrupter operated by permanent magnet actuator gives outlook on improved characteristic, higher reliability and cost price reduction as well as the feature of simple structure and few components. This paper deals with the dynamic characteristics of permanent magnet actuator used in the medium voltage distribution systems. Coupled finite element method is used to analysis the dynamic characteristics of permanent magnetic actuator and we compared with those of conventional ones

  • In the present paper, a new type of electrical actuator, an electromagnetic force driving actuator (EMFA), applicable to air circuit breaker is developed and analyzed. Transient analysis is performed to obtain the dynamic characteristics of EMFA. The distribution of static magnetic flux is obtained using the finite element method. The coupled problems of electrics and mechanics governing equations are solved using the time-difference method. According to the interception rate of each contactor, investigation of the contactor spring load condition is conducted and applied to the threelink system. Comparisons of the dynamic characteristics of the three-link simulation and experimental data are performed.

  • Dynamic Load/unload (L/UL) mechanism is an alternative to the contact start stop (CSS) technology which eliminates stiction and wear failure modes associated with CSS. Other benefits of L/UL include increased areal density due to smooth disk surfaces, thinner overcoats, and lower head flying height Improved shock resistance due to elimination of head slap, and reduced power consumption. Inertia latch mechanism becomes important for mobile disk drives because of non operating shock performance. Various types of latch designs have been introduced in hard disk drives to limit a rotary actuator from sudden uncontrolled motion. In this paper, a single spring inertia latch is introduced for a small form optical disk drive, which uses a rotary actuator for moving an optical pick-up. A new small inertia latch with single spring is designed to ensure both feasible and small size. The shock performance of the new inertia latch is experimentally verified.

  • The main goals of the automotive suspension systems are to isolate roadway unevenness from the tire and to improve vehicle stability. To overcome the performance limitation of the passive systems the active systems which completely replace the passive spring and damper elements with a force generating actuator has been studied. However, application of the system has been limited because it has required a significant amount of power. Recently, alternative systems which retain passive elements but include active elements have been developed to reduce the power required. Those systems are mostly focused on the control system which compresses the spring-damper directly. In this study, a new type of power efficient control system which makes the spring-damper unit slide in side way is studied. After constructing the control system including dynamic modeling and motion control, two types of alternative control systems are compared in view of power consumption and dynamic attitudes such as roll responses as well as heave responses. Also, a half car bond graph model is developed to show clearly the significant differences in performances between two control systems.

  • A typical conventional systems of a linear motion use rack and pinions or ball screws to convert rotary motions from DC servo motors. A linear motor has been used a several field for a MEMS technology and a aircraft carrier. We was studied a transient response of a linear actuator with a damping ratio, spring constant and a pressed power.
