  • New method has been widely used for teaching Management Science since the mid of 1990s. The new teaching method is distinguished from traditional method in several aspects. The mowt distintion of the new method is that Excel based approach is used in order to model and analyze quantitative problems. Due to the introduction of Excel based teaching method model formulation and interpretation is more emphasized than algorithms. By using this new method students are expected to be more interested in Management Science class and easily use several Management Science techniques in real world problems. Though Excel based teaching method has become more prevalent, there exist no empirical research to analyze the effectiveness of Excel based teaching method. This paper will empirically analyze how effective Excel based teaching method is. For this purpose survey data are collected fro professors teaching Management Science and analyzed by using t-test.

  • This paper presents an improved method of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) when customers are to select the best automobile purchase models. In order to support group decisions and as a different procedure of the conventional AHP, we combine the AHP model with a spreadsheet model that applies the Likert's rating scheme to each alternative. We only consider individual pairwise comparison matrices where the consistency ratio (C.R.) is less than or equal to 0.2. Finally, we regard the weight of each decision maker as a reciprocal number of C.R. As a case study we prioritize three passenger cars of medium size in the domestic market. The major evaluation criteria include:exterior or interior features, performance, safety, pricing, salesman, and after service.

  • This paper aims to develope an algorithm to minimize the total production time, sum of group formation times and processing times, under the balanced workload among the machines by grouping parts with machine loading in FMS. The algorithm of this study is composed of four step procedures ; (1) Parts grouping by Group Technology(GT) (2) Minimizing total processing time in loading problem (3) Machine workload balancing, including above(2) (4) Group formation time, including above(3) For parts grouping, Rank Order Clustering(ROC) algorithm developed by King(1980) is used and this algorithm is programmed by using the MACRO functions of QUATTRO Pro, one of the spreadsheet packages. The structure for loading model is solved by using the Hyper-LINDO. As a case study, numerical examples are demonstrated to show the effectiveness of the proposed machine loading procedure.

  • There are more than five dozen different RP(rapid prototyping) systems in the world and they are fairly expensive. All those systems have different capabilities and requirements in that each of them gives different tolerance, application field and part strength, etc. This situation may cause a problem of selecting an appropriate RP system. This paper presents an expert system, utilizing an algorithm that is composed up of rules to derive recommendations and answers to queries of the RP users. The expert system incorporates RP machines commercially available and adopts multi-selection criteria, namely, machine price, accuracy, build size, adopted process, etc. In the expert system, forward reasoning method is adopted and external spreadsheet for sub-data of the RP systems is used. The rules and knowledge are obtained from interviews and discussions with RP vendors and users, appropriate research publications and other reference materials.

  • Construction materials usually constitute a major portion of the total cost in a building construction project. Materials management Is made problematic by materials shortages, delays in supply, price fluctuations, damage and wastage, and lack of storage space. Despite the potential benefit of ICT, convincing construction organisations to embrace its use and implementation has proved a difficult task. This study seeks to identify the implementation of ICT for materials management processes in construction projects. The findings from the case studies reveal that the implementation of ICT in the materials management processes for construction projects in Malaysia Is at early stage. Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet and handheld devices are found to be the common ICT tools adopted in the materials management processes. The main barrier is found to be the cost involvement at the initial stage or overall implementation of ICT in the materials management processes. Finally, this paper concludes the finding from interviews towards the ICT implementation of materials management in the construction projects.

  • The visualization of business reports has received greater attention from information system scholars. Tables, graph and charts are often used to represent vast amount of complex numerical data and spreadsheet visuals become a de facto standard in business. This study suggests the use of individual's cognitive differences on business report visualization instead of providing "one visual fits all type of reports." It is argued that reports with data augmented by appropriate visuals will affect the efficiency and effectiveness of an individual's learning outcomes and subsequently his or her decision making processes. It is argued here that report visualization can augment the usefulness of contents and enhance many desirable features of reports as specified in those proposed models.

  • This paper concerns about how and why design frameworks for optimization should consider various software development environments such as MATLAB, VB, VBscript, Python, Tcl, PHP, Perl, and JAVA. The frameworks can be utilized by many engineers who have a basic concept about the optimization theory and/or basic knowledge about the computer programming languages. The framework will integrate a number of remote CAE tools, automatically execute them for design optimization, and have the capabilities of post-processing of data such as objective functions, state variables and design variables using a third-party spreadsheet program like Excel. The prototype framework developed in this study will be applied to various examples of optimization problems and show the validity of the proposed method of a framework implemenation.

  • Construction of a new cavern close to an existing cavern will result in a modification of the state of stresses in a zone around the existing cavern as interaction between the twin caverns takes place. Extensive plane strain finite difference analyses were carried out to examine the deformations induced by excavation of underground twin caverns. From the numerical results, a fairly simple nonparametric regression algorithm known as multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) has been used to relate the maximum key point displacement and the percent strain to various parameters including the rock quality, the cavern geometry and the in situ stress. Probabilistic assessments on the serviceability limit state of twin caverns can be performed using the First-order reliability spreadsheet method (FORM) based on the built MARS model. Parametric studies indicate that the probability of failure $P_f$ increases as the coefficient of variation of Q increases, and $P_f$ decreases with the widening of the pillar.

  • The objectives of this study were to review the present situations of computer use, computer education and training, and attitude to computer of agricultural extension agents. The research subjects were 279 agricultural extension agents in 15 City and Gun Rural Extension Offices Which were sampled by random sampling method among 182 City and Gun Rural Extension Offices. The major findings of the study were as follows; 1. Only 28% of the agricultural extension agents had personal computer in their home. 2. Agricultural extension agents mainly used word processor program, but hardly used data base, spreadsheet, and computer language. 3. About 40% of the respondents had not chance to be participated in computer education/training program yet. 4. Generally, rural change agents agreed that computer is very valuable for their job and that they should learn high computer technology. 5. Concludly, various contents of computer education/training program should be prepared for rural change agents and they should take full advantage of computer facilities.

  • This paper presents a simplified approach for the design of semi-continuous composite beams in braced frames, where specific attention is given to the effect of joint rotational stiffness. A simple composite beam model is proposed incorporating the effects of semi-rigid end connections and the nonprismatic properties of a 'cracked' steel-concrete beam. This beam model is extended to a sub-frame in which the restraining effects from the adjoining members are considered. Parametric studies are performed on several sub-frame models and the results are used to show that it is possible to correlate the amount of moment redistribution of semi-continuous beam within the sub-frame using an equivalent stiffness of the connection. Deflection equations are derived for semi-continuous composite beams subjected to various loading and parametric studies on beam vibrations are conducted. The proposed method may be applied using a simple computer or spreadsheet program.
