Characterization and Preparation of $La_{0.8}Ca_{0.2}CrO_3$ Ceramic Interconnect Prepared by Thermal Plasma Spray Coating Process for SOFC (열 플라스마 용사법에 의해 코팅된 SOFC 용 세라믹 연결재인 $La_{0.8}Ca_{0.2}CrO_3$ 특성 연구)

  • In present work, $La_{0.8}Ca_{0.2}CrO_3$ (LCC) ceramic interconnect layer for SOFC was prepared by using thermal plasma spray coating process. The LCC powders were synthesized by Pechini method and calcined at the temperature of $1000^{\circ}C$. The prepared LCC powder was characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), particle counter, BET analysis, respectively. In addition, basic and essential properties of LCC layer coated by thermal plasma spray coating process such as the morphology of surface and cross section for coated layer, gas leak rate, and electrical conductivity were analyzed and discussed. Based on these experimental results, it can be concluded that the LCC layer coated by thermal plasma spray coating process can be suitable as a ceramic interconnect of SOFC operated at $800^{\circ}C$.

Coating behavior of zirconia film fabricated by granule spray in vacuum (상온진공 과립분사에 의한 지르코니아 필름의 코팅거동)

  • The Granule Spray in Vacuum (GSV) process is a method of forming a dense nanostructured ceramic coating film by spraying ceramic granules on a substrate at room temperature in a vacuum. In the Granule Spray, the granules made by agglomerating particles with the size from submicrometer to micrometer can be sprayed into the substrate. Once the granules were squashed upon collision with the substrate, they become several dozens of nanometer-sized crystals in vacuum process. The zirconia of the monoclinic phase transform into tetragonal phase at 1150℃. At this time, its volume is changed by about 6.5 %. For this reason, it is widely held that it is difficult to acquire a compact of monoclinic zirconia sinter. In this study, the effect of particle treatment temperature and standoff distance on the substrate of zirconia granules were investigated in GSV. Also, particle treatment temperature, standoff distance, coating efficiency, and microstructure of the film were considered in forming the monoclinic zirconia coating film in GSV without any heating process. The deposited films exhibited monoclinic zirconia phase without any other detectable phase by X-ray diffractometer (XRD).

Evaluation of wear chracteristics for $Al_{2}O_{3}-40%TiO_{2}$ sprayed on casting aluminum alloy (주조용 알루미늄합금의 $Al_{2}O_{3}-40%TiO_{2}$ 용사층에 대한 마멸특성 평가)

  • The wear behaviors of $Al_2O_3-40%TiO_2$ deposited on casting aluminum alloy(ASTM A356) by plasma spray against SiC ball have been investigated experimentally. Friction and wear tests are carried out at room temperature. The friction coefficient of $Al_2O_3-40%TiO_2$ coating is lower than that of pure $Al_2O_3$ coating(APS). It is found that low friction correspond to low wear and high friction to high wear in the experimental result. The thickness of $Al_2O_3-40%TiO_2$ coatings indicated the existence of the optimal coating thickness. It is found that a voids and porosities of coating surface result in the crack generated. As the tensile stresses in coating increased with the increased friction coefficient. The columnar grain of coating will be fractured to achieve the critical stress. It is found that the cohesive of splats and the porosity of surface play a role in wear characteristics. It is suggested that the mismatch of thermal expansion of substrate and coating play an important role in wear performance. Tensile and compressire under thermo-mechanical stress may be occurred by the mismatch between thermal expansion of substrate and coating. This crack propagation above interface is observed in SEM.

Corrosion Behavior of TiN Ion Plated Steel Plate(III)-Effects of Ni and Ti interlayer thickness- (TiN 이온 플레이팅한 강판의 내식성에 관한 연구(III)-Ni 및 Ti 하지코팅두께의 영향-)

  • The effect of interlayer coating thickness of Ni and Ti on corrosion behavior was studied for TiN ion plat-ed steel plate. Interlayer coating was carried out in a single and bi-layer to a various thickness combination prior to final TiN coating. Corrosion behavior was evaluated by anodic polarization test in 1N H2SO4 as well as salt spray test. Ni interlayer coating was effectived in reducing corrosion current density of active region and Ti interlayer coating over Ni coating reduced the anodic corrosion current density by an order of 4 with increasing the thickness of Ti up to$ 3\mu\textrm{m}$. The improvement of corrosion resistance by Ni/Ti interlayer coating was attributed to the effective prevention of penetration of active corrosion agent resulting from the inherent corrosion resistance of Ni and Ti. Putting corrosion behavior was observed from salt spray test result for all specimens and corrosion resistance at salt atmosphere was enhanced with increasing Ni and Ti thickness, Cor-lay TiN coating was spalled out by the generation of corrosion products.

  • Al and Zn are used to protect the steel structures from corrosion. In the present studies, 15Al-85Zn alloy wires has been used for the deposition of coating by arc thermal spray process. Moreover, this process of coating exhibited severe defects formation, therefore, this coating was post-treated with different concentrations i.e. 0.05, 0.1 and 0.5M sodium hexa meta phosphate (Na6[(PO3)6]: SHMP) to fill to defects of deposited coatings and assessed their corrosion resistance in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution with exposure periods. After the treatment, the porosity of the coating reduced significantly by formation of composite oxide films onto the coating surface. Initially, 0.5 M SHMP treated coating exhibited highest in total impedance due to significant reduction of porosity but once the exposure periods are extended, the composite oxides are dissolved, thus, total impedance is decreased.

  • The possibility of chemical precipitation for recycled ammonium paratungstate (APT) was studied. WO3 particles were synthesized by chemical precipitation method using a 1:2 weight ratio of APT:DI-water. At the 500℃ sintering temperature, the X-ray diffraction results showed that APT completely decomposed to WO3. For the granulated powder WC-Co, vacuum heat treatment at proper temperatures increases tap density and flow-ability. Hardness of the WC-Co thermal spray coating layer was measured in the range HV 831~1266. Spray conditions for the best characteristic values were an oxygen flow rate=1500 scfh, a fuel flow rate = 5.25gph and a gun distance = 320mm.

  • The scanning quality can be influenced by reflective abilities of a surface. Transparency and glossiness of a surface can highly limit the scanning results. Various techniques have been developed to solve problems of reflective and transparent surfaces. As one of the most feasible and convenient solutions, a thin layer of coating with proper specifications is sprayed on surface for eliminating the problems of the surfaces. As the main goal is to keep the object geometry unchanged, then it is important to coat the surface with layers less than one micrometer in thickness. For this purpose, a newly designed atomization-based spray system has been developed and tested in sets of experiments to study its efficiency on scanning results while objects with the surface are in use. This paper presents the spray design process and then studies and compares the 3D scanning results of the surfaces coated with atomization-based and aerosol sprays.

  • An experimental study was conducted to investigate the effect of carbon nanotubes on the zinc corrosion resistance of sealing layer formed on the Tungsten Carbide spray coating. Using the nanotubes, a sealing agent in the form of solid-liquid suspensions was made and applied to the surface of spray coating. A series of experiments, consisted of three stages such as preparation of test piece, molten-pot immersion test, and evaluation of micro structure, were undertaken to demonstrate complicated interaction existing between zinc ions and sealing layer containing the nanotubes. Experimental results showed newly developed sealing layer were less susceptible to corrosion and thus coated layer was well protected even in the case of 10 days exposure. Comparison of the micro structure after molten pot test also indicated that carbon nanotubes still remained in the matrix and organized more reliable frame work constituted with boron nitride and chromium compound. It was revealed that carbon nanotubes in the sealing layer played positive role to enhance zinc corrosion resistance in the perspective of both fibrous structure and inherent chemical stability.

  • Rudder, one of the most important component in the marine vessel, is now being decreased life time to serve due to cavitation erosion, vortex current, high flow speed suffer from ship speed going up dramatically. In this study, 10 kinds of thermal spray coating materials(2 of Zn alloy series, 3 of Al alloy series, 3 of Cu alloy series, 2 of STS alloy series) are chosen to apply on specimens and analyze micro structure, metallic composition, properties(porosity, oxidation) by using visual observation, XRD, EDX etc.. Additionally, to refine the characteristic of corrosion endurance for thermal spray coating layer, compared with thermal spray process and 5 kinds of heavy duty painting and AC paint (Anti-Corrosion Paint). Based on above mentioned experimental results, a priority of all coated specimens on corrosion-erosion endurances finalized and summarized there by desirable composition and process of thermal sprayed material properly.

  • When a metal sprayed film of several hundred ㎛ on the concrete surface is possible to 80 dB of shielding effect electromagnetic waves (ElectroMagnetic Pulse, EMP). Therefore, in this study, as a way to secure EMP shielding performance by applying a metal spray coating showing excellent EMP shielding performance to a concrete structure, the metal spray welding efficiency and thin film adhesion performance according to the concrete spray direction and surface treatment method were evaluated. Metal sprayed efficieny according to the metal spraying direction and method was confirmed that the difference was insignificant by applying the roughening agent. However, the method of strengthening the concrete surface and applying the sealing agent show maximum adhesion strength of 3.98 MPa compared to other methods, and it is judged that this method can be utilized for the metal spraying method for concrete EMP shielding.
