Silica powders with spherical shape and narrow size distribution were prepared by large-scale ultrasonic spray pyrolysis applying the droplet classification apparatus. On the other hand, silica powders prepared by large-scale ultrasonic spray pyrolysis without droplet classification apparatus had broad size distribution. Droplet classification apparatus used in this paper applied the principles of cyclone and dispersion plate with small holes. The droplets formed from the ultrasonic spray generator applying the droplet classification apparatus had narrow size distribution. The droplets with fine and large sizes were eliminated by droplet classification apparatus. The optimum flow rate of the carrier gas and diameter of the hole of the dispersion plate were studied to reduce the size distribution of the silica powders prepared by large-scale ultrasonic spray pyrolysis. The size distribution of the silica powders prepared by large-scale ultrasonic spray pyrolysis at the optimum preparation conditions was 0.76.
The researches of a two-phase atomizers have been carried out in the field of automotive and aerospace industries in order to improve the atomization performance of the liquid droplets ejecting from these nozzles. The smaller droplets have the advantages of the reduction of environmental pollution matter and effective use of energy through the improvement of heat and mass transfer efficiency. Thus, to propose the basic information of two-phase flow, an internal mixing atomizer was designed, its shape factor was 0.6 and the liquid feeding hole was positioned at the center of the mixing tube which was used to mix the air and liquid. The experimental work was performed in the field after the nozzle exit orifice. The measurement of the liquid droplets was made by PDPA system. This system can measure the velocity and size of the droplets simultaneously. The number of the droplets used in this calculation was set to 10,000. The flow patterns were regulated by ALR (Air to Liquid mass Ratio). ALR was varied from 0.1024 to 0.3238 depending on the mass flow rate of the air. The analysis of sampling data was mainly focused on the spray characteristics such as flow characteristics distributions, half-width of spray, RMS, and turbulent kinetic energy with ALR.
A good atomization in uniform size brings the elevation of thermal efficiency in spray combustion, the beautiful painting on surfaces, and the economical sprinkling of chemicals. Ultrasonic atomization has been expected as a good uniform atomization mechanism due to its uniform size distribution. Influx, load, and physical properties of liquids are the effecting factors to atomize liquids. In this study, distilled water and city water are selected as reference liquids and gasoline, kerosene, and petroleum as fuel liquids. Characteristics and affinity to get the maximum effect for the ultrasonic atomization are observed by using the two ultrasonic transducers with 28kHz and 2MHz. Results show that the size distributions of liquid spray dorplet by the direct vibration method prevail over those by the aerosol method in uniform droplet size and as a whole, sizes of spray liquid droplets are increased slightly according to increasing influx in the direct vibration method and quantities of spray droplets in the aerosol method decreasing according to increasing liquid load h.
Optically accessible D. I. diesel engine with a rectangular combustion chamber was constructed to visualize the behaviors of sprays and flames in the combustion camber with the close conditions of pressure and temperature in an actual engine. The behaviors of sprays and flames in the combustion chamber as the operating conditions of this engine were photographed with high speed camera by Diffused Background Illumination Method. With photographs taken by this method, behavior of spray droplets injected into the combustion chamber, ignition points, and flame propagation were observed and analyzed at a time-and space-dependent fashion.
The herbicide penetration on weed leaves was spatially analyzed by using chlorophyll fluorescent emission and machine vision technique. Velvetleaf and metribuzin were used as experimental materials in the study. The herbicide spray images were obtained by a combinaton of a fluorescent dye and a UV lighting system. The herbicide penetration was analyzed by means of detecting chlorophyll fluorescent emission under blue-green lighting. According to the experiment results, the number and the size of spray droplets decreased with coverage increasing. The herbicide penetrated mainly along leaf veins and the time for complete penetration over the whole leaf was approximately 100 minutes after herbicide spraying. When the coverage of herbicide droplets on the surface of leaves increased, the speed of herbicide penetration also increased. This study suggested a way of characerizing herbicide spatial penetration and distribution in leaves.
Spray cooling is a method of cooling high-temperature heating elements by spraying droplets. Recently, spray cooling has been proposed for use in next-generation nuclear reactors. When droplets are sprayed onto the outer wall of a heat exchanger tube, a film boiling occurs on the outer wall. Over time, the outer wall temperature decreases, and a liquid film forms on the outer wall, and the heat exchanger outer wall is subsequently cooled by the liquid film. In this case, the liquid film thickness has a great influence on the heat removal performance. In this study, an experimental study was conducted to measure the liquid film thickness distribution in a droplet spray environment. For this purpose, a method using the electrical conductivity of the liquid was adopted.
Water repellent surfaces may enhance the condensation by efficiently removing the condensed droplets. However, such surfaces may lose their original performance as they are exposed to external mechanical stresses. In this work, we fabricated spray-coated mechanically robust superhydrophobic surfaces using treated titanium dioxide (Type 1) or silica particles (Type 2). Then we compared the mechanical robustness of such surfaces with the silane-coated superhydrophobic surface and PEEK coated surface using a controlled-sand blasting method. The results show that the spray-coated samples can maintain the same level of the contact angle hysteresis than silane-coated superhydorphobic surface after sand blasting at 2 bar. The spray-coating method was applied to the tube type condenser and the condensation behaviors were observed within the environmental chamber with controlled pressure, humidity and non-condensable gas. Previously-reported droplet jumping was observed in the early stage of the condensation event, but soon the droplet jumping stopped and only dropwise condensation was observed since the condensed droplets were pinned on the cracks at spray-coated surfaces. The static contact angle decreases from $158.0^{\circ}$ to $133.2^{\circ}$, and hysteresis increases from $3.0^{\circ}$ to $23.5^{\circ}$ when active condensation occurs on such surfaces. This work suggests the benefits and limitation of spray-coated superhydrophobic condensers and help develop advanced condensers for practical use.
Uniformity of spray deposit is one of the important factors in spray performance affecting efficacy of pest management. Distributions of spray deposit on artificial targets were measured and analyzed to enhance the efficiency of spray application. The research was studied to understand the deposition characteristics of spray droplets and to determine the optimum conditions of chemical application. The deposit and its pattern by the lower fan speed was more uniform and higher than that by the higher fan speed. The upward blasting distance was limited within 3 m, but the limit to the ground level was expanded the distance more than 3.5 m because of the accumulated droplets. When the fan speed was higher at the distance of 2.5 m, deposit reached to maximum. When the distance increased, deposit was getting lower. At the both fan speeds, the deposit was concentrated below $30^{\circ}$ because of the gravitation and the resistance of wind. This research can be useful in designing an orchard sprayer and its operation for various tree canopies. To achieve a uniform distribution of deposit using the air-blast type orchard sprayer, the application rate from the middle boom should be increased as the air velocity to the upward increased. The spray rate to the side boom should be limited in a minimal level.
A simplified experiment was performed to figure out the atomization characteristics of rice-bran oil which it is highly viscous liquid by applying ultrasonic energy. A spray system, an ultrasonic system, and three kinds of hole-type nozzles(hole diameter: 0.31, 0.34, 0.37mm) were manufactured. To investigate the effects of ultrasonic energy on the atomization of a highly viscous liquid, a phase doppler particle analyzer was used for measurement and calculation of spray droplets data. Nozzle opening pressures were chosen of 3 levels, i.e, 16, 20, and 24MPa. As a result, it could be concluded that the ultrasonic energy was effective to improve the spray atomization when it applied to the fuel by means of 3 different nozzles because of the effects of the liquid fuel cavitation and relaxation between molecules caused by ultrasonic energy. The improvement rate of the spray atomization by the ultrasonic method compared with the conventional spray increased about 15% in the case of hole type nozzles. By increasing of the nozzle opening pressure and decreasing of the hole diameter, the atomization of spray droplets was improved.
