  • A new spray chrysanthemum(Dendranthema grandiflorum Ramat.) cultivar 'Yes Arang' was originated from a cross between 'NOA' and 'SP03-05-04'. This cultivar was tested on the characteristics from 2005 to 2007 for the evaluation and selection including shading and retarding culture. The natural flowering time of 'Yes Arang' is late October. This cultivar was yellow in color, single in flower type for the spray type cut-flower. The diameters of flower and flower center were 4.3 cm and 1.2 cm, respectively. Year round production was possible by shading or lighting treatment. Its number of flowers was 15.1 per plant. In natural and forcing cultivation, the days to flowering was 7 weeks after short day treatment. It has resistance to white rust and the vase life was about 17.2 days in autumn season.

  • Root-lesion nematode (Pratylenchus vulnus) and pin nematode (Paratylenchus sp.) were detected with high population density at the spray chrysanthemum greenhouse in Gumi, Gyeongbuk. The average density of P. vulnus and Paratylenchus sp. was 667 and 716 nematodes per 100 g soil and P. vulnus density were distributed 87% to the depth of $0{\sim}30$ cm in greenhouse. When spray chrysanthemum cv Chopin, was transplanted in September 2004 in greenhouse, P. vulnus were 854 nematodes/100 g soil in planting and increased 14,985 nematodes/100 g soils and 1g root after 10 weeks in harvest. Shoot weight and shoot height of spray chrysanthemum decreased 24.8% and 8.0% compared with non-infested P. vulnus after 10 weeks in greenhouse.

  • A new spray chrysanthemum cultivar, 'Cherry Blossom' was released by National Horticultural Research Institute (NHRI), Rural Development Administration (RDA), Korea in 2007. A cross was made in 2002 between 'Relance', a spray cultivar with red petals and resistant to white rust and 'Yeonja', a spray cultivar with pink petals. Trials were conducted from 2005 to 2007 for the evaluation and selection of this cultivar, including shading culture in summer and retarding culture in autumn. The natural flowering time of "Cherry Blossom" is late October, but year-round flowering is possible by shading and lighting treatment. This cultivar is single type flowers with dark pink petals and green flower center and resistant to white rust. It is very stable color of petals when the variety is cultivated under high temperature conditions in summer season. The diameter of flower is 55.0 mm. The number of flowers per stem is 10.5 and the number of petals per flower is 24.0. The days to flowering under the short day treatment is about 45 in spring season.

  • This experiment investigated the dwarfing effect of daminozide and chlormequat to produce high quality of spray chrysanthemum. Long neck of cut-chrysanthemum break easily. Peduncle length of the cultivar 'Biarittz' and 'Vyking' were retarded by the foliar spray treatment of $1500mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ daminozide. Daminozide application did not affect plant growth of 'Biarittz' and 'Vyking'. However, the number of days to flowering was delayed by 3 days by daminozide application of 'Biarittz'. Length of cut flowers of 'Vyking' was decreased by the application of daminozide, while chlormequat did not affect dwarfing of peduncle length in spray chrysanthemum.

  • This study identified the effect of night time temperatures on the flowering period of spray-chrysanthemum during the summer season in South Korea. According to the results for 2005, the temperature at night time sustained more than $25^{\circ}C$ for 23.6 days during the short day period and delayed the flowering period for 22 days. Similar observations were reported in 2006, as the night time temperature sustained more than $25^{\circ}C$ for 23.6 days during the short day period and delayed flowering period for 23 days. The results for 2007 year showed that night time temperature sustained more than $25^{\circ}C$ for 31.9 days during the same period and delayed flowering for 31 days. In conclusion, based on the results for 2005 to 2007, a specific correlation was found between high night time temperatures and a delayed flowering period for the 'Euro' spray-chrysanthemum.

  • To select suitable spray chrysanthemum cultivars for Agrobacterium-mediated transformation, thirty-nine (39) spray cultivars bred in the National Institutes of Korea and a standard cultivar Jinba from Japan were collected and tested for regeneration rate and Agrobacterium infection assays. MS medium with $0.5mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ IAA and $1.0mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ BAP was used for shoot regeneration from leaf disks and internodes. The shoot regeneration rate in leaf disks was the highest in cultivar BRM, followed by cultivars VS, WW and YTM. The cultivar JB (Jinba) used as a transformation material in previous reports ranked similarly to cultivars PK and SPP. In shoot regeneration from internodes, the shoot regeneration rate was the highest for cultivar PA, followed by cultivar WW. The infection rate of leaves and internodes of 40 chrysanthemum cultivars with agrobacterium was investigated. Cultivars WPP, YNW, VS, PP, WW, FA, PA and YMN showed the highest infection levels in leaves, whereas cultivars WPP, PA, PK and YNW had the highest infection levels in internodes. Considering all of these results, cultivars VS and WW were the most appropriate for gene transformation of chrysanthemum using leaves, while cultivar PA was for internodes.
