Characteristics of Internal Flow and Fuel Spray in a Fuel Nozzle Orifice (연료노즐의 내부유동 및 외부분무 특성)

  • The nozzle geometry and up-stream inject ion condition affect the characteristics of flow inside the nozzle. such as turbulence and cavitation bubbles. Flow details in fuel nozzle orifice with sudden contraction of cross sectional area have been investigated both experimentally and numerically. The measurements of velocities of internal flow in a scaled-up nozzle with different length to diameter rat io(L/d) were made by laser Doppler velocimetry in order to clarify the effect of internal flow on the characteristics of fuel spray. Mean and fluctuating velocities and discharge coefficients were obtained at various Reynolds numbers. The turbulent intensity and turbulence kinetic energy in a sharp inlet nozzle were higher than that in a round inlet nozzle. Calculations were also performed for the same nozzles as scaled-up experimental nozzles using the SIMPLE algorithm. External spray behavior under different nozzle geometry and up-stream flow conditions using Doppler technique and visualization technique were also observed.

Measurements of Spray Characteristics According to Nozzle Property in Dual Fuel Engine with a Mechanical Fuel Pump (기계식 연료펌프를 사용하는 혼소엔진에서 노즐특성에 따른 경유 분사특성 측정)

  • The characteristics of spray behavior and injected amount were studied with two types of nozzles for using in a compression ignition engine with dual fuel technology for construction machines. A penetration length of spray tends to shorten due to a decrease of injected amount of a diesel fuel with dual fuel engine application. In order to ignite the gaseous fuel premixed with air during intake process, a diesel fuel, which was compression ignited, needs to penetrate somehow similar depth compared with the case of a diesel fuel-only-injection. In this work, a nozzle with reduced hole diameter and increased number of holes was tested and demonstrated that, compared to diesel 100% case, its penetration lengths are comparable to 74% and 79%, respectively, of those of 100% and 50% supply of a diesel fuel with the baseline nozzle that has four holes and 30.4% increased diameter. This will presumably enhancement the combustion in a dual fuel engine. A design suggestion was also made in this work to achieve similar penetration length of spray with diesel 100% case to prevent combustion from being deteriorated in a dual fuel engine.

  • In this study the penetration distance of liquid phase fuel(i.e. liquid phsae length) was investigated in evaporative field. An exciplex fluorescence method was applied to the evaporative fuel spray to measure and investigate both the liquid and the vapor phase of the injected spray. For accurate investigation, images of the liquid and vapor phase regions were recorded using a 35mm still camera and CCD camera, respectively. Liquid fuel was injected from a single-hole nozzle (l/d=1.0mm/0.2mm) into a constant-volume chamber under high pressure and temperature in order to visualize the spray phenomena. Experimental results indicate that the liquid phase length decreased down to a certain constant value in accordance with increase in the ambient gas density and temperature. The constant value, about 40mm in this study the, is reached when the ambient density and temperature of the used fuel exceed critical condition.

  • In this study, for carrying out the spray and combustion experiment using a Common Rail Direct Injection(CRDI) system, the controller was fabricated to drive a high speed camera, a injector and a laser beam sequentially at a low cost. CB280 module of one-chip micro processer was used for the controller. In order to confirm responsibility and utility of the controller, the current drive performance, the spray behavior and the injection rate were tested and analyzed under various experimental conditions. As this research results, we found that the fabricated controller was able to control the devices for the spray experiment precisely with the input value in program and it had the dynamic load responsibility and repetition. Also, we found that the injection rates of our experimental results were higher than those of others at the same injection pressure and the controller connected with the laser system and the data acquisition system had validity for carrying out the spray visualization experiment.

  • Compared to gasoline engines, diesel engines with a relatively simple ignition system are more advantageous in the application of biodeisel fuel to engine. Then in this study the comparative analysis on the spray characteristics and combustion emissions characteristic between the biodiesel(soybean oil) and diesel, the fuel for commercial diesel engine, was performed with common rail injection system. Injection pressure and ratio of biodiesel blended fuel were selected as main experimental variables. Consequently, it can be found that there is no significant difference in the macro characteristics of the spray behavior(spray penetration and spray angle) in response to change in the blend ratio of soybean oil and diesel at a fixed injection pressure, in particular, soot creation in combustion emissions in the region of low pressure was greatly affected by the blend ratio of soybean oil, however, the creation in the region of high pressure was almost unaffected by the blend ratio because of promoted atomization.

  • The effects of change in injection pressure on spray structure in high temperature and pressure field have been investigated. The analysis of liquid and vapor phases of injected fuel is important for emissions control of diesel engines. Therefore, this work examines the evaporating spray structure using a constant volume vessel. The injection pressure is selected as the experimental parameter, is changed from 400 bar to 800 bar by using a common rail injection system. Also, we conducted simulation study by modified KIVA-II code. The results of simulation study are compared with experimental results. The images of liquid and vapor phase for free spray were simultaneously taken by exciplex fluorescence method. As experimental results, the vapor concentration of injected fuel is leaner due to the increase of atomization in the case of the high injection pressure than in that of the low injection pressure. The calculated results obtained by modified KIVA-II code show good agreements with experimental results.

  • A focus is given to the breakup behavior of spray droplets issuing from a nonimpinging-type injector. The analysis has been carried out experimentally by means of the dual-mode phase Doppler anemometry (DPDA). Spray characteristic parameters in terms of axial velocity, mean diameter, velocity fluctuation, and span (width of the size distribution) of droplets are measured down the geometric axis of a nozzle orifice and on the plane normal to the spray stream with the injection pressure variations. As the injection pressure increases, the velocity and its fluctuation become higher, whereas the droplet sizes get smaller. It is also shown that the magnitudes of those parameters are smoothed out by dispersion when the droplets move downstream as well as outwardly. The atomization process is significantly influenced by the injection pressure rather than the traveling distance in the experimental condition presented.

  • In the present work, atomization characteristics of shear-thinning liquid slurry discharging from fan spray nozzles were studied experimentally for spray painting applications. The effects of solid particle size and concentration on the properties (especially on the viscosity) of suspensions and mean drop size were examined by using model fluids. In the range of low particle concentration (below 3 wt%), the fluid viscosity was primarily determined by the particle size. On the other hand, in the range of high particle concentration (higher than 10 wt%), the agglomeration phenomenon and the oil absorption capability of solid particles played major roles in determining the fluid viscosity. In the high concentration region, which most of the paints belong to, the fluid became more viscous and the shear thinning behavior appeared more prominent as the particle concentration was increased. In this region, mean drop size(SMD) decreased more rapidly with the increase of the injection pressure. Also, SMD became larger with the higher particle concentration and the larger particle size.

  • The effect of interlayer coating thickness of Ni and Ti on corrosion behavior was studied for TiN ion plat-ed steel plate. Interlayer coating was carried out in a single and bi-layer to a various thickness combination prior to final TiN coating. Corrosion behavior was evaluated by anodic polarization test in 1N H2SO4 as well as salt spray test. Ni interlayer coating was effectived in reducing corrosion current density of active region and Ti interlayer coating over Ni coating reduced the anodic corrosion current density by an order of 4 with increasing the thickness of Ti up to$ 3\mu\textrm{m}$. The improvement of corrosion resistance by Ni/Ti interlayer coating was attributed to the effective prevention of penetration of active corrosion agent resulting from the inherent corrosion resistance of Ni and Ti. Putting corrosion behavior was observed from salt spray test result for all specimens and corrosion resistance at salt atmosphere was enhanced with increasing Ni and Ti thickness, Cor-lay TiN coating was spalled out by the generation of corrosion products.

  • The large and high-speed vessels have been greatly advanced, but ship materials have been caused the problem such as corrosion, cavitation and erosion. Cavitation can produce material damage such as pumps, turbines, valves and ship propellers etc. To solve these problems, the cavitation and electrochemical characteristics for thermal spray coating and the sealing are executed to obtain the excellent corrosion protection characteristics in sea water environment.
