  • The fatigue crack initiation life is studied on automotive spot weldment made from cold rolled carbon steel(SPC) sheet by using DCPDM and local strain approach. It can be found that the fatigue crack initiation behavior in spot weldment can be definitely detected by DCPDM system. The local stresses and strains are estimated by elastic-plastic FEM analysis and the alternative approximate method based on Neuber's rule were applied to predict the fatigue life of spot weldment. A satisfactory correlation between the predicted life and experimental life can be found in spot weldment within a factor of 4.

  • The fatigue crack initiation life is studied on automotive tensile-shear spot weldment made from cold rolled carbon steel(SPC) sheet by using DCPDM and local strain approach. It can be found that the fatigue crack initiation behavior in spot weldment can be definitely detected by DCPDM system. To predict the fatigue life of spot weldment, the local stresses and strains at the potential critical region are estimated by approximate method based on Neubers rule and elastic-plastic FEM analysis. A satisfactory correlation between the predicted life obtained from Local strain approach based on Neubers rule and experimental life can be found in spot weldment within a factor of 2.

  • Many microelectronic devices are miniaturizing the capacitance density and the size of the capacitor. Along with this miniaturization of electronic circuits, tantalum (Ta) capacitors have been on the market due to its large demands worldwide and advantages such as high volumetric efficiency, low temperature coefficient of capacitance, high stability and reliability. During a tantalum capacitor manufacturing process, arc welding has been used to weld base frame and sub frame. This arc welding may have limitations since the downsizing of the weldment depends on the size of welding electrode and the contact time may prevent from improving productivity. Therefore, to solve these problems, this study applies laser spot welding to weld nickel (Ni) and Au-Sn-Ni alloy using CW IR fiber laser with lap joint geometry. All laser parameters are fixed and the only control variable is laser irradiance time. Four different shapes, such as no melting upper workpiece, asymmetric spherical-shaped weldment, symmetric weldment, and, excessive weldment, are observed. This shape may be due to different temperature distribution and flow pattern during the laser spot cutting.

  • The fatigue life is predicted on tensile-shear spot weldment made from Al-Mg alloy sheet with thickness of 0.8mm using Mitchell's method and uniform material law by $B{\ddot{a}}umel$ and Seeger based on local strain approach. The fatigue properties of critical HAZ region are estimated from the tensile property using simple hardness method. To predict the fatigue life of spot weldment, the local stresses and strains at the potential critical region are estimated by Neuber's rule. The predicted fatigue life based on uniform material law using HAZ's material properties provides good results within a factor of 3, conservatively.

  • The initiation and propagation lives of fatigue crack were studied for spot weldments composed of cold rolled steel plates(SPC$\times$SPC) and galvanized steel plates(GA$\times$GA) using DC potential drop method(DCPDM). Through the various test results, it was known that the fatigue crack initiation and propagation behaviors in all specimens could be definitely detected by DCPDM. The fatigue crack initiation life( $N_{i}$) detected by DCPDM in SPC$\times$SPC and GA$\times$GA spot weldments increased as the welding current and the nugget diameter( $N_{d}$) increased. The fatigue crack propagation life($\Delta$ $N_{f-i}$) declined as the difference of $N_{i}$ and the fatigue fracture life( $N_{f}$) also increased according to the decrease of fatigue load, $\Delta$P and the increase of nugget diameter. In the same spot weldments, the increase of nugget diameter came to increase fatigue crack propagation life owing to a decrease of stress concentration in front of nugget, especially the increasing extent for GA$\times$GA spot weldment was very high. In the welding current 6kA, $N_{f}$ for GA$\times$GA spot weldment decreased more than that of SPC$\times$SPC specimen due to zinc layer coated in steel plate and undersized nugget diameter. On the other hand, in 8kA and 10kA, the GA$\times$GA spot weldment showed higher $N_{f}$ in spite of lower $N_{i}$, than that of SPC$\times$SPC specimen except 3,000N fatigue load.ue load. load.d.

  • Fatigue strength assessments with two types of load carrying fillet weldment under out-of-plane bending load have been carried out by using both hot spot stress and structural stress methods. In this study, a derivation for the structural stress method using shell element models is discussed in detail. Finite element analysis using shell element models have been performed for the assessment of fatigue strength. As a result of the fatigue strength evaluation for load carrying transverse fillet weldment, hot spot stress method is found to be consistent with structural stress method and measurement. Hot spot stress, however, estimated for the load carrying longitudinal fillet weldment exhibit large variation with respect to mesh size and element type while the calculated structural stress for the longitudinal fillet weldment is relatively independent of mesh size. On the other hand, drawbacks and doubts associated with applying the structural stress method such as the guidance of virtual node method have been discussed.

  • Welding conditions in process of spot welding must become optimum and need to guarantee stability and reliability of vehicle body considering dynamic load history. Because welding parameters in process of spot welding are various, it is difficult that the quality of spot weldment was included in the optimum levels. In this paper, we found the optimum welding conditions satisfying KS spot welding qualities using genetic algorithm and spot welding experiments of high tensile strength steel and galvanized steel. Those experiments were dissimilar weld and 2-lap spot welding. Genetic algorithm created random welding condition after that, selected optimum individuals by probability concept.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of spot heating on the fatigue strength at the weldment. To do this, the transitional behavior of residual stress at the weld toe induced by spot heating was identified using FEA and experiment. The amount and distribution of residual stress at the weld toe strongly depends on the locations of spot heating. Based on the results, the proper spot heating condition was established. The fatigue strength of the spot-heated specimen increases compared with as-welded specimen.

  • Estimation of fatigue strength on the spot welded joint is very Important for strength design of spot welded steed sheet structures. In this paper, the effect of residual stress on the fatigue life of resistance spot weldment was studied. Residual stress fields of weldment were calculated by using thermo elastic plastic finite element analysis and equivalent fatigue stress considering residual stress effect was obtained. And then we predicted fatigue life, which included the effect of the residual stresses and the actual loading stresses. The calculation and experimental results were in good agreement. Therefore, the proposed calculated model can be considered to be sufficiently powerful for the prediction of fatigue life.

  • When the vehicle travels in an actual road, resistance spot weldments of the vehicle structure are exposed to complex loading state. Since the fatigue strength in resistance spot weldment of vehicle body can be determined by effect of residual stresses and loading state of driving, estimating actual loading state and considering residual stress effect are needed. In this study, Fatigue stress-fatigue life relation concerned residual stress effect was obtained by thermo elastic plastic finite element analysis. And applied loading in resistance spot weldments of vehicle body was calculated by dynamic analysis. Presumption of fatigue life was performed using proposed method
