  • During laser spot welding of the braun tube electron gun, phenomena such as serious spattering and oxidative reaction, etc. were occurred. The spatter occurred from weld pool affects the braun tube, namely it blocks up a very small hole on the shadow mask and causes short circuit between two poles of the electron gun. We guessed that high power density and oxidative reaction are main sources of these problems. So, we studied to prevent and to reduce spatter occurring in spot welding of the braun tube electron gun using pulsed Nd:YAG laser. The characteristics of laser output power was estimated, and the loss of laser energy by optical parameter and spatter was measured by powermeter. The effects of welding parameters, laser defocused distance and incident angle, were investigated on the shape and penetration depth of the laser welded bead in flare and flange joints. From these results, the laser peak power was a major factor to control penetration depth and to occur spatter. It was found that the losses of laser energy by optic parameter and sticked spatter affect seriously laser weldability of thin sheets.

  • This study proposes a new control method for a resistance spot welding inverter to improve weld quality. The proposed method is based on the dynamic resistance characteristics of steel sheets to be welded. A point in the second peak value of the dynamic resistance occurs during one shot of the welding current flow. A constant voltage control is applied from zero to the peak point, and a constant current control is adopted from the peak point to the end of the shot. The mixed mode control of the constant voltage and current guarantees high weld quality. Experiments are conducted with a 5 kA power supply and 0.5 mm steel sheets to compare quality. Experimental results show that weld quality is improved more than 10 times that of the conventional control method.

  • IRW(Inverter Resistance Welding) process and DSW(Delta-spot welding) process for dissimilar materials of DP590 and Al5052 were performed to evaluate the welding quality and mechanical properties. IRW experiment was carried out with changing the welding current. The other welding parameters such as pressure force, weld time, squeezing time and holding time were fixed. On the anther hand, DSW experiment was performed using the process tape at welding current of 11.5kA. The other conditions were same as IRW conditions. The various testes such as shear tensile strength, nugget diameters, EDS, SEM and cross-sectional observation for weld zone was performed. As a result, IMC(Inter Metallic Compound) thickness at 11.5kA was thinner than those of 9.5kA and 10.5kA conditions. In addition, thined IMC layer was observed when high electric current apply to the materials(DP590 and Al5052) in a short time throught dissimilar resistance spot welding controling welding conditions. The relationship between the thickeness of IMC and current intensity was after discussed.

  • The spot welds of Transformation Induced Plasticity (TRIP) steels are prone to interfacial failure and narrow welding current range. Hard microstructures in weld metal and heat affected zone arenormally considered as one of the main reason to accelerate the interfacial failure mode. There fore, detailed observation of weld microstructure for TRIP steels should be made to ensure better weld quality. However, it is difficult to characterize the microstructure, which has similar color, size, and shape using the optical or electron microscopy. The atomic force microscope (AFM) can help to analyze microstructure by using different energy levels for different surface roughness. In this study, the microstructures of resistance spot welds for AHSS are analyzed by using AFM with measuring the differences in average surface roughness. It has been possible to identify the different phases and their topographic characteristics and to study their morphology using atomic force microscopy in resistance spot weld TRIP steels. The systematic topographic study for each region of weldments confirmed the presence of different microstructures with height of 350nm for martensite, 250nm for bainite, and 150nm for ferrite, respectively.

  • Resistance spot welding of TRIP780 steels was investigated to enhance understanding of weld fracture mode after tensile shear testing (TST) and L-shape tensile testing (LTT). The main failure mode for spot welds of TRIP780 steels was partial interfacial fracture (PIF). Although PIF does not satisfy the minimum button diameter (4${\surd}$t) for acceptable welds, it shows enough load carrying capacity of resistance spot welds for advanced high strength steels. In the analysis of displacement controlled L-shape tensile test results, cracks initiated at the notch of the faying surface and propagated through the interface of weldments, and finally, cracks change path into the sheet thickness direction. Use of the ductility ratio and CE analysis suggested that the occurrence of PIF is closely related to high hardness and brittle welds, which are caused by fast cooling rates and high chemical compositions of TRIP steels. Analysis of the hold time and weld time in a welding schedule demonstrated that careful control of the cooling rate and the size of a weld nugget and the HAZ zone can reduce the occurrence of PIF, which leads to sound welds with button fractures (BFs).

  • Stainless steel sheets are widely used as the structural material for dynamic machine structures, These kinds structures used stainless steel sheets are commonly fabricated by using the gas welding, For fatigue design of gas welded joints such as various type joint. It is necessary to obtain design information on stress distribution at the weldment as well as fatigue strength of gas welded joints. Thus in this paper, ${\Delta}P-N_f$ curves were obtained by fatigue tests. and, ${\Delta}P-N_f$ curves were rearranged in the ${\Delta}{\sigma}-N_f$ relation with the hot spot stresses at the gas welded joints. Using these results, the accelerated life test(ALT) is conducted. From the experiment results, an life prediction model is derived and factors are estimated. So it is intended to obtain the useful information for the fatigue lifetime of welded joints and data analysis by statistic reliability method, to save time and cost, and to develop optimum accelerated life prediction plans.

  • The grid structures with welded hollow spherical joint (WHSJ) have gained increasing popularity for use in industrial buildings with suspended cranes, and usually welded with steel tube (ST). The fatigue performance of steel tube-welded hollow spherical joint (ST-WHSJ) is however not yet well characterized, and there is little research on fatigue life prediction methods of ST-WHSJ. In this study, based on previous fatigue tests, three series of specimen fatigue data with different design parameters and stress ratios were compared, and two fatigue failure modes were revealed: failure at the weld toe of the ST and the WHSJ respectively. Then, S-N curves of nominal stress were uniformed. Furthermore, a finite element model (FEM) was validated by static test, and was introduced to assess fatigue behavior with the hot spot stress method (HSSM) and the effective notch stress method (ENSM). Both methods could provide conservative predictions, and these two methods had similar results. However, ENSM, especially when using von Mises stress, had a better fit for the series with a non- positive stress ratio. After including the welding residual stress and mean stress, analyses with the local stress method (LSM) and the critical distance method (CDM, including point method and line method) were carried out. It could be seen that the point method of CDM led to more accurate predictions than LSM, and was recommended for series with positive stress ratios.

  • In this work, energy absorption characteristics and optimal welding space of spot-welded square hat type tube are investigated via quasi-static crush experiments and finite element (FE) analyses. A FE model reflecting the crush characteristics is established based on the experimentally observed crush mechanisms of specimens with welding spaces (20, 30 & 45 mm) and (25,40 & 55 mm) respectively for two specimen widths (60, 75 mm). The established FE model is then applied to other crush models of widths (50, 60 & 75 mm) with various welding spaces (20, 25, 30, 40, 45, 55, 75, 150, 300 mm) respectively. We examine the energy absorption characteristics with respect to the welding space for each specimen width. The outcome suggests an optimal spot welding space of square hat type thin-walled tube. Energy absorption is also presented in terms of yield strength of base metal, specimen thickness, width, and mean crushing force of spot-welded square hat type thin-walled tube.

  • In this paper, the characteristics of fatigue crack growth in the spot welded joint of the same kinds of specimens($HS{\times}HS,\;GA{\times}GAB$) and different kinds of specimens($HS{\times}GA,\;HS{\times}GAB$) which consist of dual phase high strength steel(HS) and monogalvanized steel(GA) were examined with static tension tests and axial tension fatigue tests. Some of the important results are as follows : 1. The divergence of tensile strengths among the same and different kinds of spot welds under the same conditions is comparatively low regardless of the difference of stiffness. 2. At the low load bevel and long life legion, the fatigue crack is initiated near the nugget. However, in the high load level and short life region, it occurs a tittle far from the nugget. 3. It has shown a linear relation between maximum stress Intensity factor, Kmax and fatigue life, $N_f$ among each of the spot welds and has gathered in a narrow band on the log-log graph paper. $Kmax=H{\cdot}{N_f}^{P}$ where H and P are a material constant.

  • In spot welded joint. Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry(ESPI) method using the Model 95 Ar laser a video system and an image processor was applied to measure the stress Unlike traditional strain gauges or Moire method, ESPI method has no special surface preparation or attachments and can be measured in-plane displacement with non-contact and real time. In this experiment, specimens are loaded in parallel with a load cell. The specimens are made of the cold rolled steel sheet with 1mm thickness, are attached strain. gauges. This study Provides an example of how ESPI has been used to measure stress and strain inspecimen. The results measured by ESPI are compared with the data which was measured by strain gauge method under tensile testing.
