  • In this study, the fatigue characteristic of spot weld specimen was studied by using the various specimen. The specimen types were tensile shear specimen welded one spot and two spot, and cross tension. The tensile tests and fatigue tests were executed to know the mechanical properties under static and fatigue load condition. In addition, the relationship was illustrated by finite element method.

  • The effect of out-of-plane loads on the fatigue strength of welded steel structures is examined through fatigue tests with weldment of two fillet weld joint types. The results of the fatigue tests are compared with those under axial loads, on the basis of the hot spot stress range at the weld toe. From the result of the comparison, a method on how to incorporate the effect of the out-of-plane bending stress is proposed using design S-N curves derived from fatigue tests under the axial load. The proposed method is useful for rational assessment of the fatigue strength of fillet-welded structures, where combined stresses of the in-plane axial stress and the out-of-plane bending stress are induced simultaneously due to the complexity of applied loads and structural geometry.

  • Currently knowledge of strain in welds has mainly been obtained from strain gaging method: that is directly attaching most of the material to the gage. The very few non-contact methods are still in the early stage. One of the non-contact methods is by the use of the laser that has high-level of the accuracy for the measurement, and this laser also has excellent characteristics on which many studies for its applications are focused throughout the many fields. A method of study is on the measurement of the strain caused by the characteristics of the spot welded zone which is used with 3-D ESPI system that is functionally modified through the laser ESPI(Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry) system. This system employed the SGCC 1.2t which are mainly used for the steel plate such as automobile, structure, building material and electronic appliances.

  • Tubular member is hollow and is an excellent source of structural member with great buckling resistance and tortional resistance. With its development and simplicity in structure, steel tubular truss has the ability to be structured in long span bridges, without a stiffener. Recently, it has been used in many countries in Europe, Canada, Japan, and the US with the help of international committees such as CIDECT(International Committee for the Development and Study of Tubular Structures and International Institute of Welding). The most important problem when using the tubular member is the fact that it is difficult to test the fatigue stress determined by nominal stress, since geometrical stress concentration occurs due to the welded joint's nod of complexity. The purpose of this study is to compare and examine current theories and widely applied Hot Spot stress determinations through finite element analysis, which is about welded joints of steel tubular truss. We would like to suggest a way of design practice which involves a bridge plan with rarely domestically used steel tubular truss` basic research data as well as considering the future of tubular member.

  • Estimation of fatigue strength on the spot welded joint is very Important for strength design of spot welded steed sheet structures. In this paper, the effect of residual stress on the fatigue life of resistance spot weldment was studied. Residual stress fields of weldment were calculated by using thermo elastic plastic finite element analysis and equivalent fatigue stress considering residual stress effect was obtained. And then we predicted fatigue life, which included the effect of the residual stresses and the actual loading stresses. The calculation and experimental results were in good agreement. Therefore, the proposed calculated model can be considered to be sufficiently powerful for the prediction of fatigue life.

  • The stability of a thin plate structure is very crucial problem which results buckling. Because the buckling strength of thin plates is lower than the yield strength of the material, reinforcement plate must be used to increase the buckling strength. And, in this case, spot welding is commonly used, however, the spot welded joints are practically designed by experimental decisions, so it is Inefficient and has the risks of buckling demolition. In this study, two parameters, such as the area ratio and the distance ratio of spot welding which have influence on the buckling strength, should be chosen. Under compressive and shearing load, the effect of two parameters on the critical stress is discussed.

  • Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry (ESPI) has been recently developed and widely used because it has advantage to be able to measure surface deformations of engineering components and materials in industrial areas with non-contact. The speckle patterns to be formed with interference and scattering phenomena can measure not only out-of-plane but also in-plane deformations, together with the use of digital image equipment to process the informations included in the speckle patterns and to display consequent interferogram on a computer monitor. In this study, the experimental results of a canti-levered plate using ESPI were compared with those obtained from the simple beam theory. The ESPI results of the canti-levered plate analyzed by 4-step phase shifting method are close to the theoretical expectation. Also, out-of-plane displacements of a spot welded cacti-levered plate were measured by ESPI with 4-step phase shifting technique. The phase map of the spot welded cacti-levered plate is quite different from that of the canti-levered plate without spot welding.

  • In the frontal collision the spot welded hat-shaped section side member is the fundamental structure for automobiles and has a great amount of absorbing capacity. For this reason LS-DYNA3D has been used for analyzing impact collapse characteristics on hat shaped section member with respect to the valuables; thickness, width ratio and spot weld potch on impact load(7.19m/sec, 1034J). By comparing the results from simulation and the experimental results, the utilization of simulation has been certified.

  • This stability of a plate structure is very crucial problem which results in wrinkle and buckling. In this study, the effect of the pattern of spot-welding points of the two rectangular plates on the compressive and shear buckling load is studied with respect to the thickness, aspect ratio of plates and number of welding spots. Buckling coefficient of the plate not welded was compared with that of two plates with various thickness to extract the effect of thickness. The effect of number of welding spots are studied in two directions, longitudinal and transverse directions. The conclusions obtained were that the reinforcement effect was maximized when the aspect ratio was close to 1.75 at compressive load condition and that the effect of number of welding spots in transverse direction was larger than that in longitudinal direction at shearing load condition.
