  • Two sponges, Stelletta subtilis (Sollas, 1886) and Stryphnus sollasi n. sp., were collected from depth of 24-30 m at Jeju-do Island and Chuja-do Island by SCUBA diving from July 2003 to June 2010. The new species Stryphnus sollasi n. sp is similar with Stryphnus niger Sollas, 1886 in the composition of spicules, however they differ in colour and spicule size. This new species has smaller oxeas and larger oxyasters than those of S. niger. This new species has two size categories of oxyaster but S. niger has one size category of oxyaster. The colour of S. sollasi n. sp is white, but the latter puce black. Stelletta subtilis (Sollas, 1886) is first recorded in Korean fauna.

  • This present study was undertaken to assess the effect of sterilization of the thermometer with three sorts of disinfectant sponges-0.1 % bichloride of mercury sponge 70% alcohol sponge, 0.5% zephiran chloride sponge,- by bacterial culture methods in 10 admitted adult patients in S. Hospital, Mok Po city. The results obtained were as follows ; 1. The thermometer sterilized with 0.1 % bichloride of mercury sponge showed no growth of bacteria organism in 5 cases but showed growth of pathogenic organism in 1 case and non pathogenic organism in 4 cases. 2. The thermomerer sterilized with 70 % alcohol sponge showed no growth of bacteria organism in 8 cases but showed growth of nonpathogenic organism in 2 cases. 3. The themometer sterilized with 0.5 % zephiran chloride sponge showed no growth of bacteria organism in all 10 cases. From these results it could be concluded that 0.5 % zephiran chloride would be most effective in sterilization of thermometer.

  • Two new marine sponges, Clathria(Clthria) gimnyeoungenesis n. sp. and Clathria(Clthria) reticularis n. sp., were collected in Jejudo Island, Korea by fishing nets in September 1994. C.(C.) gimnyeoungenesis n. sp. is closely related to C.(C.) toxipraedita Topsent, 1913 based on spicule types, but are different in the size of spicules and growth forms. Especially, the thick styles and large toxas length of this species are half of C.(C.) toxipraedita. Growth form of the new species is branched but massive encrusting in C.(C.) toxipraedita. C.(C.) reticularis n. sp. is similar to C.(C.) compressa Schmidt, 1862 based on spicule types, but are different in the size of spicules. Especially, large toxas of this new species is twice as long as C.(C.) compressa and they have large isochelae, which are absent in the latter.

  • Two new marine sponges in the family Halichondriidae, Halichondria gageoenesis n. sp. and Halichondria muanensis n. sp. are collected from Gageodo Island and Yongjeong-ri, Hyeongyeong-myeon, Muan-gun, Korea during 2006-2007. H. gageoenesis n. sp. is similar to H. oshoro(Tanita, 1961) in type of spicule, but is different from the latter in growth form and size of spicule. The oxea of the new species is larger than H. oshoro's. The growth form of H. gageoenesis n. sp. is thick and consists of encrusting with numerous erect hollow cylindrical tubes, but H. oshoro is of massive form. H. muanensis n. sp is similar to H. retiderma(Dendy, 1921) in type of spicule and choanosomal skeleton, but it is different from the latter in growth form and size of spicule. The oxea is smaller than that of H. retiderma. The growth form is thick and consists of encrusting, with numerous erect hollow cylindrical tubes, compared with the massive lobose of H. retiderma.

  • Two new marine sponges, Halichondria jangseungenesis n. sp. and H. nagokenesis n. sp., of the family Halichondriidae, were collected from Uljin-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Korea by SCUBA diving during the period from Apr 2007 to Aug 2007. Based on their spicule composition and skeletal structure, H. jangseungenesis n. sp. appears to have a close similarity with H. panicea (Pallas, 1766); however, they differ in length of spicule. The spicule length of oxea of H. jangseungenesis n. sp. is shorter than that of H. panicea. Based on their spicule composition and growth form, H. nagokenesis n. sp. is quite similar to H. cylindrata Tanita and Hoshino, 1989; however, but they differ in length of spicule. The spicule length of oxea of H. nagokenesis n. sp. is longer than that of H. cylindrata.

  • Biological safety, physico-chemical and microbiological experiments were carried out in order to study the possibility of radiation sterilization on medical products, such as polyethylene and polystyrene bottles, gauze sponges and surgical silk suture. Results are as follows: 1. Biological test on plastic samples as to acute systemic toxicity, eye irritation, skin irritation, pyrogen, haemolysis showed satisfactory results. But physico-chemically, the oxidizable matter, nonvolatile residues, residue on ignition seemed to be increased slightly in irradiated samples, though the experimental results were within the range of U.S.P. 19, N.F. and K.P. III. 2. After irradiation, both plastic and gauze sponges showed considerable decrease in pH. 3. Most medical products were sterilized by 1.5 Mard. For the sterilization of the suigical silk suture, 4.5 Mrad is required dul to its radiation resistant micro-organisms. 4. Biologically, total dose of 2.5 Mrad was safe enough to sterilize the medical products, and physico-chemically the results are acceptable according to U.S.P. 19 and K.P. III. However, better results may be expected when the quality of material and additives are improved.

  • Two new marine sponges in the family Chalinidae, Haliclona (Haliclona) uljinensis n. sp. and Haliclona (Reniera) hongdoensis n. sp., are collected from Uljin and Hongdo Island, Korea during 2004-2007. H. (H.) uljinensis n. sp. is closely related to H. (H.) oculata in type of spicules. However, ectosomal skeleton of H. (H.) uljinensis n. sp. is reticulated and isodictyal reticulated type but H. (H.) oculata has not any dermal specialization in skeleton. The growth form of H. (H.) uljinensis n. sp. is thin encrusting with numerous cylindrical tubes on the surface but H. (H.) oculata is solid branch form. Haliclona (R.) hongdoensis n. sp. is closely related to H. (R.) aquaeductus in skeletal structure and growth form. However, oxeas of H. (R.) hongdoensis n. sp. are larger than H. (R.) aquaeductus's.

  • This paper describes six new species of sponges in the genus Agelas from Kosrae Island, The Federated States of Micronesia. Most Agelasid sponges are known from only tropical regions. All the new Agelas species; A. fragum n. sp., A. kosrae n. sp., A. purpurea n. sp., A. bakusi n. sp., A. vansoesti n. sp. and A. incrustans n. sp. are compared with other valid species that were studied. Six new species differ from the other species by morphology, growth form, skeletal fibres, habitats and spicule size. Agelas fragum n. sp. is characterized by its tuberculate surface and primary fibres with brush-like spicules. Agelas kosrae n. sp. is differs in skeletal structure and have tertiary fibres. Agelas purpurea n. sp. is characterized by primary, secondary and tertiary fibres are all cored with spicules. Agelas bakusi n. sp. is similar to Agelas clathrodes in shape, but differs in the primary fibres. Agelas vansoesti n. sp. is characterized by having acanthostrongyles. Agelas incrustans n. sp. is distinguished by its encrusting and not cavernous interior.
