In spite of remarkable improvement of surgical skills and anesthesia, local failure still occurred in 36-45$ \% $ of locally advanced colorectal cancer after curative resection with or without pre-or post-operative irradiation. Intraoperative radiation therapy(IORT) is the ideal modality which resectable lesions are removed surgically 3nd the remaining cancer nests are sterilized by irradiation during a surgical procedure. Therefore, the excellent local control without the damage of the adjacent normal tissues can be achieved. In IORT, judicious set up of the treatment cone on the treatment surface of the patient is required for accurate and homogenous dose distribution within treatment field, especially on the slopping surface of sacrum and pelvic sidewall which are the common sites of the local recurrence in rectal cancer. For this purpose, adequate co-ordination of gantry rotation and table tilting are essential. Adjusting gantry rotation is not difficult but tilting of the table is impossible inconventional treatment couch. Department of Therapeutic Radiology in Yeungnam University Medical Center developed the IORT table for colorectal cancer which is easy to set up and detach on the Linac treatment couch within 5 minutes. The range of tilting with head-up and head-down is about 30 degree which is efficient and easy-to-use, not only for IORT but also for colorectal surgery. So far, authors performed IORT with newly developed treatment table in 2 patients with rectal cancer and we found that this newly developed table could contribute in improving the dose distribution of IORT and surgical procedure for colorectal cancer.
Jaspine B is an anhydrophytosphingosine that is isolated from a marine sponge. Because of its structural similarity to sphingosine, it shows anti-cancer effects in human carcinomas. Therefore, this study aims to investigate its anti-proliferative effect on various cancer cells and to correlate its association with the intracellular accumulation of Jaspine B in relevant cancer cells. The anti-proliferative effect of Jaspine B in various cancer cells was determined by a cell viability test, and the intracellular concentration of Jaspine B in relevant cancer cells was determined using mass spectrometry coupled with liquid chromatography. The correlation coefficient and p value between the cytotoxicity and the cell accumulation of Jaspine B were determined using SPSS 16.1. The cytotoxicity of Jaspine B varied depending on the type of cancer cell when compared the $EC_{50}$ values of Jaspine B. Breast and melanoma cancer cells were susceptible to Jaspine B, whereas renal carcinoma cells were resistant. The intracellular concentrations of Jaspine B had a reciprocal correlation with the $EC_{50}$ values in the same cells (r = 0.838). The results suggested that the anti-proliferative effect of Jaspine B was associated with the cellular accumulation of this compound. However, Jaspine B was not a substrate for P-glycoprotein and breast cancer resistance protein, as major efflux pumps caused multidrug resistance. The maintenance of a high intracellular concentration is crucial for the cytotoxic effect of Jaspine B; however, efflux pumps may not be a controlling factor for Jaspine B-related resistance in cancer cells.
Disposal of food garbage in most large cities is very troublesome task. To date, microbiological treatment has been received an attention as a garbage decomposition process. In this study, the inoculation effect of some cellulase, amylase and protease-producing bacteria and photosynthetic bacteria on food garbage treatment was examined. They were added into a treatment reactor specially designed in this study together with food garbage and incubated in various conditions for 15 days and the removals of food garbage and foul smell produced during the treatment were analyzed. Average decomposition percentages of the inoculated food garbage in treatment reactor were 11 and 18.8% under intermittent aeration (once in a day) and continuous aeration conditions (2 L/min), respectively, and these were higher than removal percentages in the corresponding uninoculated reactors,3.4 and 13.8%. Optimal pH and temperature for food garbage decomposition by inoculated bacteria were pH 7.0 and $30^{\circ}C$. Maximal decomposition percentage in the inoculated food garbage was 35% under the optimal condition (pH 7, $30^{\circ}C$, and continuous aeration). The malodor compounds generated from food garbage treatment such as complex foul smell and sulfur compounds were effectively reduced about 84% and 25.5%, respectively, with a biofilter composed of purple nonsulfur bacteria trapped in sponge. This decomposing capability of food garbage by these bacteria can be utilized for the rapid and efficient treatment of food garbage.

The objective of this study is to convert methane into hydrogen using a nanoporous catalyst in the $CO_2$ containing syngas generated from the gasified waste. For the purpose, $Ni/Al_2O_3$ catalyst was prepared with the one-pot method. According to analyses of the catalyst, three dimensionally linked sponge shaped particles were created and the prepared nanoporous catalysts had larger surface area and smaller particle size and more uniform pores compared to the sphere shaped commercial catalyst. The catalyst for reforming reaction gave the highest $CH_4$ conversion of 91%, and $CO_2$ conversion of 92% when impregnated with 16 wt% of Ni at the reaction temperature of $750^{\circ}C$. At that time, the prepared catalyst remarkably improved the $CH_4$ and $CO_2$ conversion up to 20% compared to the commercial one.

At weekly intervals, we monitored continuous changes in water quality by constructed floating wetland equipped with the four different filter media (sponge, volcanic stone, activated carbon and magnesium hydroxide) in a eutrophic lake from March 2011 to May 2012. We also investigated phyto- and zooplankton communities both in the influent and the effluent water through the floating wetland. Over a 10-month time period, average turbidity (66%), suspended solids (79%) and chlorophyll-a (80%) concentrations were remarkably reduced in the effluent water compared to the influent (P<0.001). The average removal rates of $NO_2-N$ and $NH_3-N$ were 24% and 20%, respectively (P<0.05). The average removal rates of $NO_3-N$ and TN were less than 10% (P>0.05). On the other hand, the average removal rates of $PO_4-P$ and TP were more than 65% (P<0.01). Interestingly, the abundance of phytoplankton in the effluent was decreased about 2.6 times compared to that of the influent, whereas the abundance of zooplankton in the effluent was increased about 3.5 times compared to that of the influent. Overall, particulate matters (SS, Chl-a and TP) and dissolved nutrients ($NO_2-N$, $NH_3-N$ and $PO_4-P$) were particularly reduced at high rates. Therefore, application of our constructed floating wetland in a eutrophic lake improved the water quality and demonstrated a potential for algal bloom mitigation.

In recent years novel potential pharmocological candidates have been looked for in animal, seaweed, sponge, fungi and marine bacteria resources. In this study, matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) that play an important role in metastasis, arthritis, chronic inflammation and wrinkle formation were used as target enzymes to screen therapeutic agents. The inhibitory effects of several marine algae including green algae (5 species), red algae (18 species) and brown algae (4 species) methanolic extracts on MMPs were investigated in human dermal fibroblasts and human fibrosarcoma cell line (HT1080 cells) using gelatin zymography. In human dermal fibroblasts, the inhibition of MMP-2 was observed in Laurencia okamurae, Polysiphonia japonica, Grateloupia lanceolate and Sinkoraena lancifolia of red algae. In contrast, MMP-2 activation was enhanced in Enteromorpha compressa and E. linza of green algae, and Peltaronia bighamiae and Sargassum thunbergii of brown algae. In human fibrosarcoma cells, MMP-9 activation was decreased in the presence of S. thunbergii of brown algae, Polysiphonia japonica in red algae and E. compressa and E. linza of green algae. The interesting finding is that E. compressa and E. linza of green algae, and S. thunbergii of brown algae exhibited a positive effect on MMP-2 in normal cells, but a negative effect on MMP-9 in cancer cell lines. These results suggest that E. compressa and E. linza of green algae, and S. thunbergii of brown algae contain potential therapeutic ingredients for cancer treatment.
These studies aimed to investigating the pathogenicity of Fusarium isolates from the wilted cucur bitaceous plants and the pathogenicity of 24 isolates to cucumber, oriental cantaloup, oriental pickling melon, sponge gourd. muskmelon and watermelon were as follows. 1) The isolates from wilted watermelon and melon severely and one of the isolates was slightly pathogenicon oriental pickling melon or oriental cantaloup. 2) The isolates from wilted cucumber were four types. some of the isolates were severely pathogenic on cucumber and infected oriental cantaloup. oriental pickling melon and melon. Some of the isolates were not pathogenic or slightly pathogenic on cucumber. but these were severely pathogenic on oriental pickling melon. One of the isolates was severely pathogenic on oriental cantaloup oriental pickling melon and melon, but no pathogenic on cucumber and one of the isolates was also severely pathogenic on oriental cantaloup. oriental pickling melon and melon and moderatly pathogenic' on water melon. 3) The isolates from wilted oriental cantaloup were four types some of the isolates infected oriental cantaloup, oriental pickling melon and melon severely and some of the isolates were pathogenic on oriental cantaloup. oriental pickling melon. melon and watermelon. One of the isolates, was slightly pathogenic on oriental pickling melon and melon but one of the isolates was highly pathogenic on melon and infected watermelon slightly. 4) Wilt Fusarium of the cucurbitaceous plants could divide into the group of wilt Fusarium of watermelon, cucumber and muskmelon according to the pathogenicity but it will have to rearrange to one form species from several form species of wilt Fusarium of the cucurbitaceous plants and ought to divide to races according to pathogenicity on severely fixed differential varieties which selected from the cucurbitaceous plants. because of the degree of pathognicity and host range are not surely fixed between isolates of wilt Fusarium of the cucurbitaceous plants tested.

The white-rot fungus (Trametes versicolor) and brown-rot fungus (Tyromyces palustris), which cause damage to a variety of wooden cultural properties and buildings, such as drying of the wood tissue, decay and cracks, sponge, and discoloration, give rise to serious structural and aesthetic problems. Moreover, pest termites (Reticulitermes speratus kyushuensis Morimoto) can cause damages like hollowing the outdoor beams or pillars of wooden buildings and finally causing such buildings to collapse due to the termites' destruction of the inside of the beams or pillars, leaving only a thin layer on their surfaces. This study was conducted to determine the impact of the wood-decay fungus, a representative damage-causing microorganism, and of insects and termites on the termite ecology. The damage ratio was calculated as the weight of the timber, and the overall total mass was reduced from two kinds of rot fungi. The white-rot fungi reduced the total wood mass, but the brown-rot fungi were observed to have had an increasing tendency to do so. The wood mass was measured after drying to determine the destruction capacity of termites. As a result, the wood mass consumed by the brown-rot fungi was shown to be greater.
The effects of solvents (DMAc, NMP, 1,4-dioxane) and nonsolvents ($H_2O$, Methanol, n-hexane) on the morphology of 6FDA-p-TeMPD polyimide membrane, prepared by the wet phase inversion method, were studied. In the polymer/solvent/nonsolvent ternary system, the binodal curve, the coagulation value and the relative light transmission were measured, and the solubility parameter difference was calculated. The onset state and rate of liquid-liquid alemixing were predicted and the morphology of membrane was analyzed. It is found that the finger-like pores are formed within discontinuous polymer nodules when the binoclal curve is close to the polymer-solvent (P-S) axis, the coagulation value is small, the reduction of light transmission is easy to occur and the order of solubility parameter difference ($\Delta \delta_{i-j}$) is $\Delta \delta_{S-NS} > \Delta \delta_{P-NS} > \Delta \delta_{P-S}$. The dense skin with small nodules and the sponge type sublayer with macrovoid are formed in the case that the binodal curve is distant from the P-S axis, the onset time of liquid-liquid demixing is long and the order of $\Delta \delta_{i-j}$ is $\Delta \delta_{P-NS} >(\Delta \delta_{S-NS} < > \Delta \delta_{P-S})$. The thick layer of fine nodule coagulation and loosely grown sublayer of nodules appear when the binodal curve is distant from the P-S axis, the onset time of liquid-liquid demixing is very long and the order of $\Delta \delta_{i-j}$가 $\Delta \delta_{S-NS} > (\Delta \delta_{P-NS}$\lessgtr$ > (\Delta \delta_{P-NS} < >)\Delta \delta_{P-S}$ ).
Marine organisms were investigated to identify the marine actinomycetes that produced noble bioactive compounds. Microorganism counts range from $2.1{\times}10^3\;to\;1.2{\times}10\;CFU/g$ of marine organisms. Actinomycetes constituted 0.01 to $0.5\%$ of culturable microbial community. We identified the marine actinomycetes that produced novel bioactive compounds. During the course of screening for bioactives from the marine microorganisms, we found that the strain in sponge had antimicrobial activities. From the morphological, cultural and various physiological characteristics, this strain was identified for Actinomycetes No. 101. The optimal compositions of culture medium for Actinomycetes No. 101 were starch 30g/l as carbon source, casamino acid 10g/l as nitrogen source. The optimal pH of medium and fermentation temperature were $6.5{\sim}7.0$ and $30^{\circ}C$, respectively. Fermentation has been conducted in the marine broth at $30^{\circ}C$ for 72 hour. The yield of fermentation got about 3g as dry weight(per liter of broth). The distribution of antimicrobial activity of Actinomycetes No. 101 was screened by paper disc. The extract of cultured cell and broth inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis, but the inhibition action was week against yeast and mold.
