The present study deals with the unique characteristics of hydrogen jet diffusion flames, such as split flames and reignition phenomenon. The split flames are composed of a small flamelet on the nozzle rim and a lifted main flame at downstream. When mass flow rates of fuel reach a critical point, a small-sized flamelet is found to remain in the vicinity of the nozzle exit and the flame reignition subsequent to blowout of main flame occurs repeatedly. In this study, the non-luminous hydrogen jet diffusion flames are visualized by using schlieren technique in order to analyze the combustion characteristics of hydrogen jet diffusion flames with focus on the flame reignition phenomenon.
The oxygen fuel MILD (Moderate or Intense Low-oxygen Dilution) combustion has been considered as one of the promising combustion technology for flame stability, high thermal efficiency, low emissions and improved productivity. In this paper, the effect of oxygen and fuel injection condition on formation of MILD combustion was analyzed using lab scale oxygen fuel MILD combustion furnace. The results show that the flame mode was changed from a diffusion flame mode to a split flame mode via a MILD combustion flame mode with increasing the oxygen flow rate. A high degree of temperature uniformity was achieved using optimized combination of fuel and oxygen injection configuration without the need for external oxygen preheating. In particular, the MILD combustion flame was found to be very stable and constant flame temperature region at 7 KW heating rate and oxygen flow rate 75-80 l/min.

In this paper, the study of effects of flow parameters on flame structure and NOx emission concentration was performed in co-axial. laminar partially premixed methane/air flames. Such (low parameters as equivalence ratio(${\Phi}$), fuel split percentage($\sigma$), and mixing distance(x/D$\_$i/) were defined as a premixing degree and varied within ${\Phi}$=1.36∼9.52, $\sigma$=50∼100, and x/D$\_$i/=5∼20. The image of OH$\^$*/ and NOx concentration were obtained with an ICCD camera and a NOx analyzer. The flame structure observations show a categorization of partially premixed flames into three distinct flame regimes corresponding to ${\Phi}$<1.7(premixed flame structure), 1.7<${\Phi}$<3.3(hybrid structure), and ${\Phi}$>3.3(diffusion flame structure existing a luminous sooting region) at $\sigma$=75%, and x/D$\_$i/=10. As o decreases from 100% to 50%, and x/D$\_$i/ decreases, nonpremixed flame structure appear at low equivalence ratio relatively. In addition, the measured emissions for NOx rise steeply from ${\Phi}$=1.7, to ${\Phi}$=3.3, then constants ${\Phi}$>4.76. NOx emissions decrease with increase the level of premixing level. In conclusion, the main effect on flame structure and NOx production was at first equivalence ratio(${\Phi}$), and next fuel split percentage($\sigma$), and finally mixing distance(x/D$\_$i/).
In this paper, the study of effects of flow variables on flame structure and NOx emission concentration was performed in co-axial laminar partially premixed methane/air flames. the objectives are to reveal its effect as parameters were varied and to understand the correlation between flame structure and NOx emission characteristics in the reaction zone. equivalence ratio(${\Phi}$), fuel split degree(${\sigma}$), and mixing distance(x/D) were defined as a premixing degree and varied within $1.36{\sim}3.17$(equivalence ratio), $50{\sim}100$(fuel split degree), and $5{\sim}20$(mixing distance). the image of $OH{\ast}$ and $CH{\ast}$, and NOx concentration were obtained with an ICCD camera and a NOx analyzer. additionally the maximum intensity location of $OH{\ast}$ chemiluminescence and $CH{\ast}$ chemiluminescence were measured to compare each flame structures. In conclusion flame structure and NOx emission characteristics were changed from diffused to premixed flame when mixing degree was on the increase. the main effect on flame structure and NOx production was at first equivalence ratio(${\Phi}$), and next fuel split degree(${\sigma}$), and finally mixing distance(x/D).
Partial quenching structure of turbulent diffusion flames in a turbulent mixing layer is investigated by the method of flame hole dynamics in order to develop a prediction model for turbulent flame lift off. The essence of flame hole dynamics is derivation of the random walk mapping, from the flame-edge theory, which governs expansion or contraction of flame holes initially created by local quenching events. The numerical simulation for flame hole dynamics is carried out in two stages. First, a direct numerical simulation is performed for constant-density fuel-air channel mixing layer to obtain the turbulent flow and mixing fields, from which a time series of two dimensional scalar dissipation rate array is extracted at a fixed virtual flame surface horizontally extending from the end of split plate to the downstream. Then, the Lagrangian simulation of the flame hole random walk mapping projected to the scalar dissipation rate array yields temporally evolving turbulent extinction process and its statistics on partial quenching characteristics. The statistical results exhibit that the chance of partial quenching is strongly influenced by the crossover scalar dissipation rate while almost unaffected by the iteration number of the mapping that can be regarded as a flame-edge speed.
In this study, the effect of central fuel injection on a coaxial laminar $CH_{4}/air$ flame was experimented at the defined premixing condition(${\Phi}=1.90$, ${\sigma}=50/75/100%$, x/D=10). The partial premixing parameter are the equivalence ratio that total fuel is fixed at 200cc/min, the fuel split degree which means the percentage of fuel entering the outer tube to the total amount, and the mixing distance indicating the nonreactant mixture's homogeneity between inner tube top and burner exit. The object is to investigate the flame structure and chemiluminescence characteristics of laminar partial premixed flame as changing mixing parameters. The radical signal was acquired from ICCD camera and PMT. Each intensity was compared with Abel inverted value for measuring the effect of background light on the peak signal location and the intensity at central preheat zone. The results show that the peak location of each radical was broaden as the fuel split degree increasing because the mixing quality was enhanced. and $OH^{\ast}$ is a good indicator for flame front between reaction and preheat zone. At last $CH_{2}^{\ast}$ has the same tendency with $CH^{\ast}$ but a thinner reaction zone than $CH^{\ast}$ due to a rapid decay on the burned gas side.
A pressure-based, unstructured finite volume method has been applied to couple the chemical kinetics and fluid dynamics and to capture effectively and accurately the steep gradient flame field. The pressure-velocity coupling is handled by two methodologies including the pressure-correction algorithm and the projection scheme. A stiff, operator-split projection scheme for the detailed nonequilibrium chemistry has been employed to treat the stiff reaction source terms. The conservative form of the governing equations are integrated over a cell-centered control volume with collocated storage for all transport variables. Computations using detailed chemistry and variable transport properties were performed for two laminar reacting flows: a counterflow hydrogen-air diffusion flame and a lifted methane-air triple flame. Numerical results favorably agree with measurements in terms of the detailed flame structure.

An experimental study is carried out on turbulent diffusion flames stabilized by a circular cylinder in a divergent duct flow. A commercial grade gaseous propane is injected from two slits on the rod as fuel. Flame stability limits, as well as size and temperrature of recirculation zone, are measured by direct and schlieren photographs to clarify the characteristics and structure of diffusion flames and to assess the effect of various divergent angle of duct. The results of the present study are as follows. Temperature in the recirculation zone decreases with increasing divergent angle. The blow-off velocity in parallel duct is higher than that in divergent duct. Critical blow-off velocity is expected to be about 8-12 degree through blow-off velocity pattern. Regardless of divergent angles, the length of recirculation zone is nearly constant, and this length becomes longer with rod diameter. Pressure gradient has an effect on the eddy structure in shear layer behind the rod. With the increase of divergent angle, large scale eddies by dissipated energy in shear layer are split into small scale eddies, and the flame becomes a typical distributedreacting flame.
It is shown that the effect of variable parameters on flame structures and NOx emissions in the laminar partially premixed methane-air flames with a co-axial Bunsen burner. Objectives of this paper is to understand the effects of flow variables on NOx emissions and the flame structure with OH chemiluminescence, including reconstructed image by abel inversion processing at each conditions. A fuel flowrate of 200 [cc/min] was fixed and the amount of air was varied from 400 to 1200 [cc/min]. The experimental variables were equivalence ratio(${\Phi}$ fuel split percentage(${\sigma}$ and inner tube recess(x/D). Flow conditions were ranged from $1.36{\sim}4.76$(equivalence ratio), $50{\sim}100$(fuel split percentage) and $0{\sim}20$(inner tube recess). NOx analyzer and ICCD camera with a OH filter were used as a main experimental apparatus. In addition, Abel inversion, which is a kind of tomography and valuable to estimate a two-dimensional structure of co-axial flames from cubical information, was employed for combustion diagnostics. Results from this study indicate that the main effects depend on equivalence ratio and next sigma, x/D for NOx production and OH formation. Throughout Abel inversion, we could affirm the maximum position and the tendency of OH radical intensity by variants at five axial heights above the burner exit.

Background: This study aims to assess whether the TSI PortaCount (Model 8020) is a measuring instrument comparable with the flame photometer. This would provide an indication for the suitability of the PortaCount for determining the workplace protection factor for particulate filtering facepiece respirators. Methods: The PortaCount (with and without the N95-CompanionTM) was compared with a stationary flame photometer from Moores (Wallisdown) Ltd (Type 1100), which is a measuring instrument used in the procedure for determining the total inward leakage of the particulate filtering facepiece respirator in the European Standard. Penetration levels of sodium chloride aerosol through sample respirators of two brands (A and B) were determined by the two measuring systems under laboratory conditions. For each brand, thirty-six measurements were conducted. The samples were split into groups according to their protection level, conditioning before testing, and aerosol concentration. The relationship between the gauged data from two measuring systems was determined. In addition, the particle size distribution inside the respirator and outside the respirator was documented. Linear regression analysis was used to calculate the association between the PortaCount (with and without the N95-CompanionTM) and the flame photometer. Results: A linear relationship was found between the raw data scaled with the PortaCount (without N95-CompanionTM) and the data detected by the flame photometer (R2 = 0.9704) under all test conditions. The distribution of particle size was found to be the same inside and outside the respirator in almost all cases. Conclusion: Based on the obtained data, the PortaCount may be applicable for the determination of workplace protection factor.
