  • This study developed the Time-split Mixing Model (TMM) which can represent the pollutant mixing process on a three-dimensional open channel through constructing the conceptual model based on Taylor's assumption (1954) that the shear flow dispersion is the result of combination of shear advection and diffusion by turbulence. The developed model splits the 2-D mixing process into longitudinal mixing and transverse mixing, and it represents the 2-D advection-dispersion by the repetitive calculation of concentration separation by the vertical non-uniformity of flow velocity and then vertical mixing by turbulent diffusion sequentially. The simulation results indicated that the proposed model explains the effect of concentration overlapping by boundary walls, and the simulated concentration was in good agreement with the analytical solution of the 2-D advection-dispersion equation in Taylor period (Chatwin, 1970). The proposed model could explain the correlation between hydraulic factors and the dispersion coefficient to provide the physical insight about the dispersion behavior. The longitudinal dispersion coefficient calculated by the TMM varied with the mixing time unlike the constant value suggested by Elder (1959), whereas the transverse dispersion coefficient was similar with the coefficient evaluated by experiments of Sayre and Chang (1968), Fischer et al. (1979).

  • Typical tree-based spatial index structures are divided into a data-partitioning index structure such as R-Tree and a space-partitioning index structure such as KD-Tree. In recent years, researches on hybrid index structures combining advantages of these index structures have been performed extensively. However, because the split boundary extension of the node to which a new spatial object is inserted may extend split boundaries of other neighbor nodes in existing researches, overlaps between nodes are increased and the query processing cost is raised. In this paper, we propose a hybrid index structure, called SQR-Tree that can support efficient processing of spatial queries to solve these problems. SQR-Tree is a combination of SQ-Tree(Spatial Quad- Tree) which is an extended Quad-Tree to process non-size spatial objects and R-Tree which actually stores spatial objects associated with each leaf node of SQ-Tree. Because each SQR-Tree node has an MBR containing sub-nodes, the split boundary of a node will be extended independently and overlaps between nodes can be reduced. In addition, a spatial object is inserted into R-Tree in each split data space and SQ-Tree is used to identify each split data space. Since only R-Trees of SQR-Tree in the query area are accessed to process a spatial query, query processing cost can be reduced. Finally, we proved superiority of SQR-Tree through experiments.

  • It is ironic but not coincidental that the loss of Korean sovereignty to Japan roughly paralleled the formation of the idea of Korean ethnic identity. The coalescence of the content of this heretofore amorphous notion of a "pure" and transcendental (in the class sense) ethnic essence was, again ironically, the result both of ideologies taken from (or given by) Japan and resistance to Japanese encroachment. What resulted was the birth of a hybrid (sub) consciousness that was able to accommodate disparate, or even contradictory, realities simultaneously without any sense of contradiction (Christian and shaman for example). If, as Kim Chul has asserted, the colonial period was the most impactful in forming today's Korean society and "giving birth" to today's Korean, it becomes easy to imagine how this formation process included elements of Japanese and western culture. This meant that there was going to be an inevitable cognitive dissonance when these influences collided with the imperatives of ethnic nationalism which became the touchstone for a common Korean identity (North and South). This paper attempts to show how this split-consciousness was manifested in Yeom Sang seop's Manse jeon with the aim of identifying how it affects discourses related to nationalism and identity.

  • Versatile Video Coding (VVC) is the latest video coding standard developed by Joint Video Exploration Team (JVET). In VVC, the quadtree plus multi-type tree (QT+MTT) structure of coding unit (CU) partition is adopted, and its computational complexity is considerably high due to the brute-force search for recursive rate-distortion (RD) optimization. In this paper, we aim to reduce the time complexity of inter-picture prediction mode since the inter prediction accounts for a large portion of the total encoding time. The problem can be defined as classifying the split mode of each CU. To classify the split mode effectively, a novel convolutional neural network (CNN) called multi-level tree (MLT-CNN) architecture is introduced. For boosting classification performance, we utilize additional information including inter-picture information while training the CNN. The overall algorithm including the MLT-CNN inference process is implemented on VVC Test Model (VTM) 11.0. The CUs of size 128×128 can be the inputs of the CNN. The sequences are encoded at the random access (RA) configuration with five QP values {22, 27, 32, 37, 42}. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can reduce the computational complexity by 11.53% on average, and 26.14% for the maximum with an average 1.01% of the increase in Bjøntegaard delta bit rate (BDBR). Especially, the proposed method shows higher performance on the sequences of the A and B classes, reducing 9.81%~26.14% of encoding time with 0.95%~3.28% of the BDBR increase.

  • A flywheel system is an electromechanical energy storage device that stores energy by rotating a rotor. The rotating part, supported by magnetic bearings, consists of the metallic shaft, composite rims of fiber-reinforced materials, and a hub that connects the rotor to the shaft. The delamination in the fiber wound composite rotor often lowered the performance of the flywheel energy storage system. In this work, an advanced hybrid composite rotor with a split hub was designed to both overcome the delamination problem in composite rim and prevent separation between composite rim and metallic shaft within all range of rotational speed. It was analyzed using a three-dimensional finite clement method. In order to demonstrate the predominant perfom1ance of the hybrid composite rotor with a split hub, a high spin test was performed up to 40,000 rpm. Four radial strains and another four circumferential strains were measured using a wireless telemetry system. These measured strains were in excellent agreement with the FE analysis. Most importantly, the radial strains were reduced using the hybrid composite rotor with a split hub, and all of them were compressive. As a conclusion, a compressive pressure on the inner surface of the proposed flywheel rotor was achieved, and it can lower the radial stresses within the composite rotor, enhancing the performance of the flywheel rotor.

  • Recently, use of various position base servicesthat collect position information for moving object and utilize in real life is increasing by the development of wireless network technology. Accordingly, new index structures are required to efficiently retrieve the consecutive positions of moving objects. This paper addresses an improved trajectory split algorithm for the purpose of efficiently supporting spatio-temporal range queries using index structures that use Minimum Bounding Rectangles(MBR) as trajectory approximations. We consider volume of Extended Minimum Bounding Rectangles (EMBR) to be determined by average size of range queries. Also, Use a priority queue to speed up our process. This algorithm gives in general sub-optimal solutions with respect to search space. Our improved trajectory split algorithm is going to derive minimizing volume of EMBRs better than previously proposed split algorithm.

  • In this paper, a frequency split type broadband drive amplifier operating in the L, S and C bands was designed and fabricated. Transistor is difficult to efficiently use when the fractional bandwidth of the drive amplifier is more than 100%, In particular, the characteristics of the driving amplifier are important for operating the power amplifier in which the characteristics of the output power and the efficiency are sensitively changed according to the frequency band. A frequency split methods was applied to maximize the bandwidth of a drive amplifier and to divide the output of the drive amplifier into low band and high band so that the transistor of the power amplifier located at the rear of the drive amplifier can be efficiently used. The designed drive amplifier was fabricated in GaAs HBT technology and 9-layer SiP, and verified by the measurements. The fabricated drive amplifier shows a gain of more than 8 dB and an output power of more than 15 dBm in the operating frequency range.

  • This paper proposes an optimized hardware implementation method for existing CIE1931 color gamut control algorithm. Among the post-processing methods of dehazing algorithms, existing algorithm with relatively low computations have the disadvantage of consuming many hardware resources by calculating large bits using Split multiplier in the computation process. The proposed algorithm achieves computational reduction and hardware miniaturization by reducing the predefined two matrix multiplication operations of the existing algorithm to one. And by optimizing the Split multiplier computation, it is implemented more efficient hardware to mount. The hardware was designed in the Verilog HDL language, and the results of logical synthesis using the Xilinx Vivado program were compared to verify real-time processing performance in 4K environments. Furthermore, this paper verifies the performance of the proposed hardware with mounting results on two FPGAs.
