The purpose of this study was to construct a grounded theory as the basis for developing future nursing interventions by describing and analyzing the holistic lives of the physically handicapped adolescents. The subjects were 10 physically handicapped adolescents who were attending a rehabilitation school located in Kyunggi region and could understand and respond to the questions. The aim and purpose of the study were explained to the subjects, and only those who accepted to participate in the study were selected as the actual study subjects. The study data were collected from July to November 2000. The investigators provided detailed explanations to the subjects about keeping the anonymity of the subjects name and confidentiality of the information provided by the study subjects. The subjects received in-depth interviews by the investigators. Each interview took about 40 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes, and each subject received interviews with the range of one to 3 times. All interviews were recorded under the permission of the subjects. The investigators formed field notes after finishing each interview. In the process of data analysis, 'realizing the difficulty due to physical handicap' was found to be the causal condition, whereas' acceptance of physical handicap' was identified as the context. Then, we identified' awaring as the valuable being' as the core phenomenon, 'support from family and social group and spiritual help' as the intervening condition, 'effort for adaptation' as the strategy, and' finding the meaning of life' as the consequence. Through the theoretical model derived from this study, an important aspect the lives of physically handicapped adolescences was identified that' awaring as the valuable being' help them cope better and find the meaning of life in spite of suffering they experience.
This study aims to analyze what Saul Bellow wants to define "Love" in his recent work, More Die of Heartbreak. As a humanist, Saul Bellow is concerned about materialism in Post-modern age through his works. Today there are so many people that are hurt by the failure of love or experience heartbreak. We need to sense invisible danger all around us. We can find Bellovian love in More Die of Heartbreak. Bellow suggests that there should be "true love" between people, especially between men and women. But Kenneth Trachtenberg and Benn Crader have selfish and materialistic love. Kenneth had only a sensual desire for Treckie who is his daughter's mother. He cannot persuade Treckie to marry him. Benn, a middle-aged widower, peremptorily marries Matilda Layamon who is much younger than he. Unfortunately, the marriage brings him neither peace nor love. Benn recognizes his wrong conception of love through the death of Mrs. Bedell and Villitzer, and breaking off a marriage with Matilda. He decides to go to Antarctica. This is not an escape. This is his determination to save himself. At the North Pole he sets out to recover his gift of vision and redeem his fall from grace. He will desert his materialistic and absurd self. After the expedition, he will experience rebirth as an authentic human being who has acceptable eyes. Kenneth and Benn learn to conceive of love as one of man's strongest inner energies, for it is through love that you can penetrate to the essence of human being. In this study I try to define Bellovian love. In More Die of Heartbreak, love is a spiritual power that may even transfigure man.
Purpose: This study was done to explore the essence and meaning of the experience of 'aging', as a process of 40's and 50's women in Korea by applying the Parse's Human Becoming theory (2002). Methods: Data was collected from February to April, 2013, using the phenomenological research method. Data was collected through in-depth informal interview and analyzed following Colaizzi method. After IRB permission and informed consent from the participants, all interviews were recorded with MP3 recorder and transcribed for analysis. Results: Data analysis revealed 112 of meanings, 33 key subject words, 8 subject phrases, and 4 categories. The main themes were elaborated as 'going down' ('Being changed of body and mind', 'Being considered on my identity'), 'going up' ('Being expanded of productive role', 'Being transcendent multi-dimensionally'), 'pausing' ('Becoming more thoughtful about family', 'Looking back'), 'going forward again' ('Age is just a number, 'Contemplating of life and death'). Experiences in aging among women in 40's and 50's enlightened with Parse's theory of Human Becoming in terms of 'going down', 'going up', 'pausing', 'going forward again' appeared simultaneously, rather than consecutively. Conclusion: Women in 40's and 50's require holistic nursing intervention with physical, psychological, socio-economical, and spiritual aspects, rather than focusing on problematic physical symptom relief and prevention of further conditions. It is recommended to develop various nursing intervention considering on different environment, type of experience, and level of human becoming, individually.
This paper aims to examine a truth about love - the close relationship between a person's passionate love and that same person's loneliness and suppressed desires, a relationship that Carson McCullers (1917-1967) portrays in The Ballad of the Sad Cafe. McCullers, one of several brilliant writers from Southern America, managed to overcome her cruel situation and showed deep insight into the human condition, particularly in regard to the relation between love and isolation. The Ballad of the Sad Cafe, like her other works, examines the spiritual isolation and the agony of love that three lovers experience. The love in this story is a triangular relationship among the three main characters, Amelia, Lymon and Marvin Macy. The distinctive characteristics of love described in this story are that each character falls into blind and passionate love for the person he/she loves, no matter how the beloved responds. Love also changes the lover, not the beloved, revealing the completely opposite nature of the lover. The opposite nature and the inner secrets that the love reveals about the lovers reflect their frustrated and suppressed desires, which is femininity and motherhood for Amelia, non-violent masculine power for Macy, and physical attraction and power for the hunchback, Lymon. These suppressed desires are rooted in the deep sense of frustration that they had to experience in their childhood. In short, the seemingly unconditional love of the main characters is not an ideal, altruistic love, but a reflection of their inner desires. This story, however, does not seem to criticize this kind of love but simply tries to give an honest picture of what love might be. It also admits that 'deformed' love is still better than no love (and consequently no stimulus) because what really damages and causes decay in human beings and in a community, is the state of boredom.
In the EFL context, Korean students don't have enough opportunities to directly experience the target culture, prompting the need to offer some well-organized culture education in class. The goals of this study are to analyze how many cultural contents are reflected in High School English textbooks and to suggest an implication for cultural learning. These textbooks were carefully examined, focusing on the cultural contents, by four categories: 'cultural skill section', 'cultural patterns', 'related language skills', and 'target countries'. The results of the analysis were like the following: First, although many of the textbooks are dealing with the culture skill sections, their contents were still wanting consistency and were small in quantity. Second, as for the cultural patterns, the pages dealing with behavioral culture were 43%, spiritual culture, 35.7%, material culture, 21.3%. Third, as for the related language skills, the cultural contents in the textbooks were organized in the order of listening, reading, speaking, writing, and cultural skill sections. Since it is impossible to separate language skills from culture, we suggest that the aspects of target culture should be incorporated in various forms into the learning situations. Fourth, as for the issue of target countries, the contents about the general or whole English culture were insufficient. So we suggest that English textbooks should play an essential role in providing students with various cultural information about various English speaking countries.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the daily stress and stress coping behavior of elementary school children. The subjects for this study were 372 children fourth, fifth and sixth graders from an elementary school in Pusan. We adopted Won - Joo Chung's research instrument (1997) for measuring stress and coping behavior in this study. Statistical techniques such as frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, order, and Pearson correlation were used to examine the research questions of this study. The results of this study were as follows: 1. The most common instance of stress to be experienced by all children was the stress from school life, followed by social pressures, individual pressures and family environment. 2. A positive revaluation was the most commonly used stress-coping behavior, followed by behavioral mood conversion, spiritual support, problem-facing behavior, an information search for problem-solving, physical separation for emotional relaxation, avoidance, emotional aggressiveness and emotional expression. 3. Stress-coping behavior had a positive and significant correlation with the stress score(r = .4391, p= .000). In conclusion, the stress from school life was the most common experienced by all children. While independent effort in problem-solving was unsufficient, stress coping behavior had positive results. Therefore, this study verified the necessity of minimizing the stress children experience from school life and of helping them attain desirable stress-coping behaviors.
Purpose: The objective of this study was to understand the caring experience of families with terminal cancer patients. Method: This was designed to be an inductive and descriptive study. Forty-seven families with terminal cancer patients were interviewed in depth and collected data were examined through content analysis. Result: The main categories of difficulties found in this study were 'suffering of patient', 'emotional suffering of family', 'bereavement of patient', 'difficulties in coping', 'problems in treatment', 'incurable situation', 'family problems', 'relationship with other people', 'economic problems', 'spiritual problems', 'problems in the future', 'informing patients of their condition', 'preparing death', 'emotional unstability', 'meaninglessness', 'unkindness of medical teams', 'poor environment for treatment', 'difficulties in hospital environment' and 'economic burden'. Conclusion: The main point found from this result was that families taking care of terminal cancer patients are suffering emotionally from watching the patients' pains and had difficulties in coping with the patients' situation and treatment. In addition, they had negative experiences in medical teams' attitude and hospital environment. This result can be used as an important guide for nurses to assess families' needs in the terminal care setting.
This study has been geared to document primary information on common complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) used to treat and/or manage common dermatological disorders in Mauritius, a tropical multicultural island in the Indian Ocean. Data from 355 key informants was collected via a semi-structured questionnaire. Pearson correlation and Chi-squared test were performed to delineate any association. Quantitative indexes including the Importance Value (IV) and fidelity value were calculated. Results tend to indicate that cultural reasons were behind the use of CAM among Mauritians and traditional knowledge was mainly acquired either from parents/relatives or from self-experience. Among the medicinal plants mentioned, Aziadiracta indica (IV = 0.78) and Paederia tomentosa (IV = 0.70) were found to be most used plants. Calendula officinalis (IV = 0.15), Centella asiatica (IV = 0.22) and Agauria salicifolia (IV = 0.11) were also recorded to be used for common dermatological disorders though greatly under-utilised. Animal products were mentioned by 38.0% respondents and cow ghee was found to be commonly used in the management of measles (IV = 0.88). Spiritual healing was found to be used mainly for measles and warts. Given the plethora of novel information documented from the present survey, it can be suggested that the Mauritian population still relies to a great extent on CAM which needs to be preserved and used sustainably. Nonetheless, further investigation is required to probe the possible active constituents that could be the basis of an evidence based investigation to discover new drugs.
The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the maturity of Christian faith and anxiety. Nurses are concerned with the spiritual dimension of clients' experience. The subjects of this study were patients with cancer in Y. University Hospital in Seoul Subjects were selected who knew their diagnosis, were aged 20 or older and agreed to the interview. A total of 35 patients were interviewed from August 1 to September 15, 1988. The instruments used in this study were the maturity of Christian faith scale developed by H.S. Choi and modified by the investigator, and an anxiety scale developed by the investigator. Data were analyzed by statistical methods including Frequency, ANOVA, and Pearson Correlation Coefficient. Results included the following : Hypothesis, “That as the degree of maturity of Christian faith of the patients increases, the degree of state anxiety will decreases”, was supported (${\gamma}$=-.8061, p<.001). According to this study, maturity of Christian faith is significantly related to on the reduction of anxiety of patients with cancer. In a holistic approach to their clients, nurses may have confidence that the maturity of Christian faith of their clients will contribute to the reduction of anxiety.
This qualitative case study examines how mid-life housewives perceive age, react to aging, and experience the changing of their appearance that comes with age. The participants of this study were eight housewives four full-time housewives and four working housewives in middle adulthood. This study was conducted through in-depth interviews that were based on an unstructured questionnaire, and the data was collected from January 2010 to October 2010. Findings are as follows: during mid-life, housewives continue to exert efforts toward self-development, and toward self-actualization that can unleash the potential of their "multi-self". The housewives of the Entering Middle Adulthood self-actualization period believe that the material self as manifested in appearance is the most important component of the multi-self. Indeed, both groups of housewives thought a great deal about the criterion of appearance for their age and were concerned about others' viewpoints, social stereotypes, the appearance "norm," and other characteristics related to appearance. The full-time housewives made efforts to improve their social selves, and the working housewives tried to enhance their spiritual selves. The viewpoints of husbands are often internalized into housewives' internal points of view; therefore the relationships of housewives with their husbands were crucial both to the confidence the women felt in their appearance, and to their satisfaction in life.
