  • Ternary blend fibers (TBFs) based on melt blends of PEN, PET, and TLCP were prepared by melt blending and spinning to achieve high performance fibers. The reinforcement effect and the TLCP fibrillar structure resulted in the improvement of mechanical properties for TBFs. Molecular orientation was an important factor in determining the tensile strength and modulus of TBFs. Another part of this research is silica nano-particle filled PEN composites were melt-blended to improve mechanical and physicalproperties, and processability. The tensile modulus and strength were improved adding silica nano-particles to the PEN. The decreased melt viscosity by the fumed silica resulted in the improvement of the processability. The fumed silica may act as a nucleating agent in the PEN matrix.

  • Cellulose is extremely difficult to dissolve cellulose in water and most common organic solvents due to their stiff molecular structure, close chain packing and intermolecular hydrogen bonds. Recently, cellulose solutions using ionic liquids (ILs) as a green solvent have been known to form cholesteric liquid crystalline phase at high cellulose concentration. In this study, the phase transition and rheological behaviors of concentrated cellulose/[AMIM]Cl solution were investigated using polarized optical microscopy and rheometry. Studies were conducted to characterize the influence of cellulose concentration on the phase transition of the cellulose solution and the mechanical properties of the regenerated fibers spun from the anisotropic cellulose/[AMIM]Cl solutions.

  • Contact material is widely used as electrical parts. Ag-Cd alloy has a good wear resistance and stable contact resistance. But the disadvantages of Ag-Cd alloy are coarse Cd oxides and harmful metal, Cd. To solve the disadvantages of that, Ag-Sn alloy that has stable and fine Sn oxide at high temperature has been developed. In order to optimize Sn amount that affects the formation of the oxide layer on the surface, we worked for the microstructures and properties of Ag-Sn material fabricated by rapid solidification process. The experimental procedure were melting using high frequency induction, melt spinning, and internal oxidation. We have shown that the optimized Sn amount for high hardness is 7.09 wt%Sn. Surface oxide layer forms when Sn amount is over 9.45 wt%. The size of Sn oxide is 20 nm.

  • One of the biggest problems encountered during the last phase of silkworm rearing is non-uniform maturation of the silkworms especially during cooler months. Phytoecdysteroid (20-hydroxy ecdysone) was extracted in large-scale from a plant belongs to Caryophyllaceae and fed to silkworm larvae to test the effect of phytoecdysteroid. About 80% of the silkworms were ready for mounting by 18 hrs after treatment (when the treatment is done for uniform spinning), whereas in control batch only 37% worms were ready for mounting by the same time.

  • Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system prevents vehicle from spinning or drifting out mainly by braking intervention. Although a control threshold of conventional VSC is designed by vehicle characteristics and centered on average drivers, it can be a redundancy to expert drivers in critical driving conditions. In this study, a manual adaptation of VSC is investigated by changing the control threshold. A control threshold can be determined by phase plane analysis of side slip angle and angular velocity which is established with various vehicle speeds and steering angles. Since vehicle side slip angle is impossible to be obtained by commercially available sensors, a side slip angle is designed and evaluated with test results. By using the estimated value, phase plane analysis is applied to determine control threshold. To evaluate an effect of control threshold, we applied a 23-DOF vehicle nonlinear model with a vehicle planar motion model based sliding controller. Controller gains are tuned as the control threshold changed. A VSC with various control thresholds makes VSC more flexible with respect to individual driver characteristics.

  • A rate gyroscope has been used popularly to measure the angular motion of a given vehicle using a symmetric rotor spinning rapidly about its symmetry axis. Since the rapid rotation is required in this type of gyroscope, the motor has been used to make the rotor spin, so that it results in a heavy configuration. The toning-fork gyroscope has been developed to avoid this problem, which utilizes a Coriolis coupling term and vibration about one axis. Due to the Coriolis effect, the vibration of one axis is transferred to other axis when the angular motion along the vibrating axis is given to the system. The concept of a tuning-fork gyroscope was recently realized using MEMS techniques. However, the dynamic characteristics of the tuning-fork gyroscope has not been discussed in detail. In this study. we derived the equations of motion for the tuning-fork type gyroscope using the energy approach and investigated the dynamic characteristics by means of numerical analysis.

  • We successfully extirpated all four hemopoietic organ-wing disc complexes of the fifth instar larvae of Bombyx mori, and found that most of the treated silkworms could still develop into the moths. We investigated the changes of the circulating hemocytes and evaluated the effects of extirpation on the hemopoiesis. The results showed that proliferation of circulating hemocytes was sufficient to allow development of the silkworms which complexes were totally extirpated. We also found that hemopoietic organ-wing disc complexes extirpation might cause a certain hemopoietic compensation of the remainder complexes during early spinning. Exogenous hormones such as $20-{\beta}-hydroxyecdysone$ and juvenile hormone analog had a positive effect on hemocytes proliferation.
