PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to measure changes in spine inclination and thoracolumbar structure and morphology according to upper-extremity movements with and without resistance in order to evaluate the spine stability in workers. METHODS: Forty-eight middle-aged male workers (mean age, 40.48 ± 6.27 years) participated in this study. Using the spine analysis system, changes in the inclination of the spine and structure as well as shape of the thoracolumbar spine were measured. For posture measurement, the postures of standing, lifting the right and left arms (shoulder joint 90° flexion), and lifting with both arms were measured in random order. In addition, variables were measured using a resistance of 3 kg for each posture. The statistical significance level was set at α = .05 for all variables. RESULTS: There were statistically significant differences between the front and back inclinations of the spine, kyphotic curve of the thoracic spine, lordotic curve of the lumbar spine, rotation changes in the thoracolumbar spine, and rotation changes in the T4 vertebra (p < .05). However, there was no significant difference in the left and right tilts of the spine. In the post-hoc analysis, rotation changes in the T4 vertebra showed a significant difference in posture when resistance was applied to the left and right sides CONCLUSION: Causes of musculoskeletal diseases include excessive thoracic spine rotation, torsion, and hyperlordosis of the lumbar spine. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the working environment in order to ensure a healthy posture and prevent musculoskeletal diseases that can reduce the ability to carry various and/or excessive loads.

Objectives : It is difficult to make accurate diagnosis of musculoskeletal disease because of its multiple, subjective and non-specific symptoms. It is possible to reduce errors of differential diagnosis through detailed history taking and physical examination in parallel with laboratory tests based on clinical decision. Methods : Korean and foreign on-line databases(Pubmed, Cochran Library, NDSL, KISS and OASIS) were researched for articles discussing laboratory tests in musculoskeletal diseases. Results : Laboratory tests could be applied usefully for various musculoskeletal diseases, In this review, available laboratory components in these musculoskeletal diseases are summarized, and then significance and usefulness of disease-specific laboratory examination are described. Conclusions : When examining musculoskeletal patients, it needs to accurate differential diagnosis by full interview and physical examination, to select required tests by understanding laboratory tests thoroughly, and to judge the prognosis precisely.
Objectives : The present study examines indications and treatment techniques of Chuna manual therapy. Methods : We searched the clinical studies on Chuna manual therapy through 5 korean web databases, 2 journals.(key word 'chuna') After selecting appropriate clinical studies(Bongchuna, massage, side effect, contraindication are excepted), we analyzed them according to diseases, Chuna techniques, type of clinical trials. Results : 101 studies are selected and analyzed. They studied about cervical(26%), thoracic(12%), lumbar (29%)spinal disorders, temporomandibular joint disorders(4%), pelvic region disorders(4%), upper(6%), lower extremity(5%) disorders and other diseases(15%). Spinal disorders are studied frequently. Mild techniques like supine position both hand cervical spine flexion distraction, JS supine position cervical spine distraction, flexion distraction technique are used more frequently than adjustment by thrust. Conclusions : We have to enhance education and training about techniques that are frequently used and studied. Research and improvement of infrequently used techniques are needed. In-depth research about side effects and contraindication is needed. Highquality clinical research and systematic review should be needed to prove the therapeutic effect of Chuna treatment.
Objective: To evaluate which Korean pain descriptors are frequently used in the patients with neuromusculoskeletal diseases and compare the frequency of Korean pain descriptor according to age, gender, pain pattern and intensity, and clinical diagnosis. Method: Two hundreds sixty nine patients with neuromusculoskeletal diseases were enrolled in this study. The patients were asked to fill out a pain questionnaire using Korean. The Korean pain descriptors were collected and classified according to neurophysiological mechanism. The frequency of Korean pain descriptor was analyzed by age, gender, pain pattern and intensity, and clinical diagnosis. They were divided into axial spine and peripheral joint pain group depending on the location of causal disease and shoulder pain descriptors were divided into intra-articular and bursa group. Results: Among 24 Korean pain descriptors, 'arida' was the most common pain descriptor, followed by 'ssusida' and 'jjireunda'. When the pain descriptors were classified according to neurophysiological mechanism, superficial somatic pain was the most common, followed by deep somatic pain. There was a significant difference in the frequency of the pain descriptor between axial spine and peripheral joint pain group (p=0.007). The pain descriptor 'danggida' was used significantly more in the patients with axial spine pain than peripheral joint pain (p=0.024). However, there was no significant difference in other factors. Conclusion: The patients with neuromusculoskeletal diseases expressed their pain using various Korean pain descriptors with stabbing nature and superficial somatic pain. Our results may be helpful to assess and develop a new Korean pain quality measure in the patients with neuromusculoskeletal diseases.

Purpose: Elderly patients with degenerative diseases undergo treatment for the hip and spine; these patients present with various symptoms. This study focused on patients with residual symptoms, predominantly pain, even after receiving treatment for their spinal lesions. Materials and Methods: Patients who underwent total hip arthroplasty (THA) between 2016 and 2022 at a single tertiary hospital were included in the study. Of the 417 patients who underwent primary THA, a retrospective review of 40 patients with previous lesions of the spine was conducted. Patients were stratified to two cohorts: Patients with symptoms related to the spine (Group A), and those with hip-related symptoms (Group B). Preand postoperative comparisons of groups A and B were performed. Results: Improvements in patients' symptoms were observed in groups A and B after THA. In Group A, the mean preoperative visual analog scale (VAS) score was 5.10±0.876, which showed a postoperative decrease to 2.70±1.767. In Group B, the mean preoperative VAS score was 5.10±1.539, which showed a postoperative decrease to 2.67±1.493. Conclusion: According to the findings, promising results were achieved with THA in treatment of debilitating diseases of the hip for both the prognosis of the disease, as well as the patients' symptoms. In addition, in some cases elderly patients with dual pathologies underwent treatment for spinal lesions without performance of any evaluation related to the hip. Thus, evaluation of a patient's hip must be performed and performance of THA in patients with symptoms even after treatment of spinal lesions is recommended.

As the Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) is developed, an interventional procedure becomes the major of the spine surgery in the world. Despite of the use of the expensive medical equipments, the success chance of the nucleoplasty is about 30%. The reason is that the shape of the cannular needle is similar to that of the conventional injector and looks like the straight. Because the tip of these straight needles is not able to reach in the vicinity of the disc bulging or the protrusion, which are the cause of the low back pain and because the far indirect plasma discharge results in the decompression, the nucleoplasty has the limit. Many incurable diseases has not been solved due to the unexistence of the advanced technique for the MIS human body cannula device. If 3-D direction controllable cannular catheter (whose direction is accurately controlled after inserting into the bodies to cure the lesion) is developed, it is expected that new devised cannular catheter can cure many incurable diseases simultaneously. Therefore, the aims of this research are to develop the new devised cannular catheter of SMA direction controller for the medical situation, which has been produced through many previous trial-error procedures, and to produce the commercial medical device.
Calcium density in human bones decreases as people are getting older due to the interior or exterior environmental factors. Bone aging forms osteoporosis. And this can bring out various spine fractures which develops a complications. Thus the prediction of seniliy is one of the important factors in spine diseases. Once spine aged, diverse fractures occur such as compression fracture and micro fracture. Side images of the spine by the digital radiography (DR) were prepared, and pixel arbitrary unit with Image J was measured from one spot in the lumbar bone part. By calculating pixel arbitrary unit of the simple contrast, it was obtained that the value of pixel arbitrary unit decreased as seniliy of bones increased. By simply applying Image J to the seniliy of patient's spine, the seniliy of bones predicts the level of danger with only digital radiography(2D) image. consequently we show that Image J value of pixel arbitrary unit index for predicts the level of precaution of osteoporosis patient.
Osteoporosis is a common metabolic bone disease characterized by low bone mineral density (BMD) with an increased risk of fracture. Low bone mass results from an imbalance between bone formation by osteoblasts and bone resorption by osteoclasts. Microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) plays a critical role in osteoclast development and thus is an important candidate gene affecting bone turnover and BMD. In order to investigate the genetic effects of MITF variations on osteoporosis, we directly sequenced the MITF gene in 24 Koreans, and identified fifteen sequence variants. Two polymorphisms (+227719C > T and +228953A > G) were selected based on their allele frequencies, and then genotyped in a larger number of postmenopausal women (n = 560). Areal BMD ($g/cm^2$) of the anterior-posterior lumbar spine and the non-dominant proximal femur was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. We found that the MITF + 227719C > T polymorphism was significantly associated with low BMD of the trochanter (p = 0.005-0.006) and total femur (p = 0.02-0.03) (codominant and dominant models), while there was no association with BMD of the lumbar spine. The MITF+228953A > G polymorphism was also associated with low BMD of the femoral shaft (p = 0.05) in the recessive model. Haplotype analysis showed that haplotype 3 of the MITF gene (MITF-ht3) was associated with low BMD of the trochanter (p = 0.03-0.05) and total femur (p = 0.05) (dominant and codominant models). Our results suggest that MITF variants may play a role in the decreased BMD of the proximal femur in postmenopausal women.
