  • The present study covers an integrated simulation method to evaluate optical performance of an aspheric plastic lens by connecting a finite element (FE) analysis of injection molding with a ray tracing simulation. Traditional ray tracing methods have based on the assumption that the optical properties of a lens are homogeneous throughout the entire volume. This assumption is to a certain extent unrealistic for injection-molded plastic lenses because material properties vary at every point due to the injection molding effects. To take into account the effects of the inhomogeneous optical properties of the molded lens, a new.ay tracing scheme is proposed in conjunction with a FE analysis of the injection molding. A numerical scheme is developed to calculate ray paths on every element layer with more realistic information of the refractive indices which can be obtained through the FE analysis. This information is then used to calculate the ray paths based on the FE mesh of which nodal points have unique index values. The proposed tracing scheme is implemented on the tracing of an aspheric lens, and its validity is ascertained through experimental verification.

  • The development of polishing technology has enabled the production of injection molds with high quality surfaces and shapes. For products such as mobile phones which require high quality performance the use of plastic materials has many constraints such as shrinkage and deflection. The purpose of the current research is to use reverse engineering in order to find and analyze the data of a selected aspherical lens and then creating a process to design an improved lens. Additionally, the improved lenses are subject to molding analysis. In order to solve this problem, the lens construction program, Zemax, was used to analyze and optimize performance. In the case of optimization, the object was to eliminate spherical aberration and to find good MTF data. The result of the optimization data was similar to the MTF data found from a random lens. Specific resin and analysis conditions were selected and CAD modeling was done to enhance the injection molding analysis.

  • Eye Glass Display (EGD) with microdisplay to realize the virtual display can make the large screen, so virtual image has been developed by using microdisplay panel. This paper shows study of spherical prism lens design and manufacture of a small size and light weigh EGD with 0.59" OLED panel. Code V is used and it designed an aspherical prism lens about eye relief 25mm and 42 degree of filed of view (FOV). With the application this aspheric prism lens to OLED type's microdisplay, virtual image showed 60 inch at 2m. It had less than 2% of distortion value and modulation transfer function in axial had 30% of resolution with 32 lp/mm spatial frequency. We made an injection molding bases to lens designed.

  • Multi-view 3D displays based on a limited number of pixels have the problem that the stereo-scopic image has a low resolution because of increasing view number. To solve the problem of low resolution, we propose an optical approaching method that focuses the width of a unit pixel by using a commercial spherical shape lenticular lens sheet and increases the effective resolution by increasing the number of sources of light in the multi-view 3D display system based on projection type. The method was performed in such an order that several main derivable parameters were defined, and, through the theoretical and experimental result, the value of the contractible unit pixel width and the scalable effective resolution was derived in a given system environment. As a result, for the case that the ray of light from the projector transmitted the 25 LPI lenticular lens sheet which has the pitch size 1.016 mm, the focused unit pixel width was 0.19 mm and the scalable effective resolution was, at most, 5 times wider than the original one. In addition, the range of depth of focus was 1.496 mm, which shows us the range of thickness tolerances of commercial spherical shape lenticular lens sheet and sufficient optical alignment tolerances.

  • Plastic array lens are cheap to manufacture; however, plastic is not resistant to high temperatures and moisture. Optical glass represents a better solution but is a more-expensive alternative. Glass array lens can be produced using lithography or precision-molding techniques. The lithography process is commonly used, for instance, in the semiconductor industry; however, the manufacturing costs are high, the processing time is quite long, and spherical aberration is a problem. To obtain high-order aspherical shapes, mold-core manufacturing is conducted through ultra-precision grinding machining. In this paper, a $4{\times}1$ mold core was manufactured using an ultra-precision machine with a jig for the injection molding of an aspherical array lens. The machined mold core was measured using the Form TalySurf PGI 2+ contact-stylus profilometer. The measurement data of the mold core are suitable for the design criterion of below 0.5 um.

  • In order to produce high-quality optical components, aspheric lenses have been widely applied in recent years. An aspheric lens consists of aspheric surfaces instead of spherical ones, which causes difficulty in the design process as well as the manufacturing procedure. Although injection molding is widely used to fabricate optical lenses owing to its high productivity, there remains lots of difficulty to determine appropriate mold design factors and injection molding parameters. In the injection molding fields, computer simulation has been effectively applied to analyze processes based on the shell analysis so far. Considering the geometry of optical lenses, however, numerical analysis based on solid elements has been reported as more reliable approach than shell -based one. The present work covers three-dimensional injection molding simulation using MP1/Flow3D and relevant deformation analysis of an injection molded plastic lens based on solid elements. Numerical analysis has been applied to the injection molding processes of an aspheric lens for a photo pick-up device. The reliability of the proposed approach has been verified in comparison with the experiments.

  • General method for correcting the distortion caused by the characteristic of the fish-eye lens may be classified in two ways. The first method is a calibration method using a mathematical model taking into account the characteristics of the lens, the second method is a method using only the distortion correction image, regardless of the lens. When considering the characteristics of the lens, calibration equation can be calculated geometrically from the relationship between the three-dimensional real-world coordinates and two-dimensional image coordinates and the parameters of lens. However, it is not suitable for ellipsoid type lens, because of existing research papers have been corrected on the spherical-type fisheye lens. In this paper, we propose a method for correcting geometrically using fish-eye lens as an ellipsoid model. Through a calibration picture, it can be seen that the proposed method is valid.

  • A spherical surface referenced Shack-Hartmann method is studied for inspecting machining accuracy of large concave mirror This method is so strong to the vibration environment for using as an on-machine inspection system during polishing process of large optics comparing with the interferometry. The measuring uncertainty of the system is shown as less than p-v 150 m. On-machine measured surface profile data with this method is used for feed back control of the polishing time or depth to improve the surface profile accuracy of large concave mirror. Also, the spherical surface referenced Shack-Hartmann method is useful for measuring aspheric such as parabolic or hyperbolic surface profile, comparing that the interferomehy needs a special null lens, which is to be a reference and difficult to fabricate.
