  • The unsteady numerical simulations have been presented for the laminar natural convection in a partially open compartment. Computations were performed within the domain of the compartment in order to show the thermal radiation and the partially opening effects on the flow fields and heat transfer characteristics. The results were shown for different Planck numbers(0.05~5) and opening ratios(0.25~0.75) being fixed with Ra=$10^5$ and Pr=0.71. Considering the flow which is buoyancy driven from the heated wall, and the buoyancy is not much affected by the further outside region from the opening, the numerical computations have been performed without an outer region by the particular boundary treatments on the flow velocity and temperature at the different partial openings. The confined numerical domain reduced the CPU time and the memory of computer. P-1 approximation of radiative transfer equation was employed with Marshak type boundary conditions along with the pseudo-black body approximation at the partial openings. The numerical results clearly show that the natural convective flow and heat transfer are much affected by increase of thermal radiation particularly from the initial state. When thermal radiation is not much affecting the flow ($PL{\le}1$), it was found that thermal radiation effects are almost negligible.

  • Thermospheric neutral winds and temperatures have been collected from the ground-based Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) at Thule Air Base ($76.5^{\circ}N{\;}69.0^{\circ}W$), Greenland since 1985. The thermospheric observations are obtained by determining the Doppler characteristics f the [OI] 6300 ${\AA}$ emissions of atomic oxygen. The FPI operates routinely during the winter season, with a limitation in the observation by the existence of clouds. For this study, data acquired from 1985 to 1991 were analyzed. The neutral wind measurements from these long-term measurements are used to investigate the influence of solar cycle variation on the high-latitude thermospheric dynamics. These data provide experimental results of the geomagnetic polar cap are also compared with the predictions of two semiempirical models : the vector spherical harmonics (VSH) model of Killeen et al. (1987) and the horizontal wind model (HWM) of Hedin et al. (1991). The experimental results show a good positive correlation between solar activity and thermospheric wind speed over the geomagnetic polar cap. The calculated correlation coefficient indicates that an increase of 100 in F10.7 index corresponds to an increase in wind speed of about 100 m/s. The model predictions reveal similar trends of wind speed variation as a function of solar activity, with the VSH and HWM models tending to overestimate and underestimate the wind speed, respectively.

  • The physical model of interest is based upon the concentric cylinder, where the outside cylinder is filled with optically thick and high temperature phase change material(PCM). The fluid is flowing through the inside cylinder to transfer the appropriate energy. The fluid is flowing through the inside cylinder to transfer the appropriate energy. The governing equations for the phase change material including internal thermal radiation and for the turbulent transfer fluid have been employed and numerically solved. The optically thick phase change justifies the P-l spherical harmonics approximation, which is believed to be appropriate choice particularly for the much coupled problem like in this study. The solid/liquid interface, temperature distribution within the PCM and the heat flux from the PCM to the transfer fluid have been obtained and compared with those of laminar transfer fluid. The numerical results show that the turbulent transfer fluid accelerates the solid/liquid interface and results in the increase of heat transfer rate from the PCM. The internal thermal radiation within the PCM, however, does not always playa role to increase the heat transfer rate throughout the inside cylinder. It is believed that the combined heat flux has been picked up more in the inflowing area than in the pure conductive phase change material.

  • The main field component of the Earth's magnetic field was modeled from the tri-axial magnetometer onboard KOrean MultiPurpose SATellite-II (KOMPSAT-II) for the purpose of satellite attitude control. The model computed by the KOMPSAT-II magnetometer measurement data is compared with the International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF) model of a degree of up to 13 in spherical harmonic coefficients. The previous study with KOMPSAT-I (Kim et al. 2004) indicated a good correlation of power spectrum of spherical harmonic coefficients with respect to the degree up to 5. This study, however, showed an agreement of the degree up to 8-9 of the coefficient power spectrum and a discrepancy between degrees 10 and 13. We have concluded that relevant data selection process, removal of the external field from the data in the high latitude region, an accuracy of the magnetometer all play an important role in finding a coherence with the IGRF model. This study will be extended to the secular variation model of geomagnetism if longer-period data become available.

  • Analytical geopotential field in balance with the sectoral mode (the first symmetric mode with respect to the equator) of the Rossby-Haurwitz wave on the inclined rotation axis was derived in presence of superrotation background flow. The balanced field was obtained by inverting the divergence equation with the time derivative being zero. The inversion consists of two steps, i.e., the evaluation of nonlinear forcing terms and the finding of analytical solutions based on the Poisson's equation. In the second step, the forcing terms in the from of Legendre function were readily inverted due to the fact that Legendre function is the eigenfunction of the spherical Laplacian operator, while other terms were solved either by introducing a trial function or by integrating the Legendre equation. The balanced field was found to be expressed with six zonal wavenumber components, and shown to be of asymmetric structure about the equator. In association with asymmetricity, the advantageous point of the balanced field as a validation method for the numerical model was addressed. In special cases where the strength of the background flow is a half of or exactly the same as the rotation rate of the Earth it was revealed that one of the zonal wavenumber components vanishes. The analytical balanced field was compared with the geopotential field which was obtained using a spherical harmonics spectral model. It was found that the normalized difference lied in the order of machine rounding, indicating the reliability of the analytical results. The stability of the sectoral mode of Rossby-Haurwitz wave and the associated balanced field was discussed, comparing with the flrst antisymmetric mode.

  • The Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) has observed the Earth's mass redistribution mainly caused by the variations of groundwater, ice sheet, and sea level since its launch in April 2002. The global gravity model estimated by the GRACE observation is corrected by barometric pressure, and thus represents the change of Earth mass on the Earth's surface and below Earth's surface excluding air mass. However, the total air mass varies due to the water exchange between the Earth's surface and the atmosphere. As a result, the nominal GRACE gravity model should include the Earth's gravity spectrum associated with the total air mass variations, degree 0 and order 0 coefficients of spherical harmonics ($C_{00}$). Because the water vapor content varies mainly on a seasonal time scale, a change of $C_{00}$ (${\delta}C_{00}$) is particularly important to seasonal variations of sea level, and mass balance between northern and southern hemisphere. This result implies that ${\delta}C_{00}$ coefficients should be accounted for the examination of continental scale mass change possibly associated with the climate variations.

  • We measured the terrestrial nightglow of OI $6300{\AA}$ in the thermosphere (~250km) using a ground-based Fabry-Perot interferometer at the King Sejong Station, Antarcticfrom March through September, 1997. The King Sejong Station is located at high latitude geographically ($62.22^{\circ}S,\;301.25^{\circ}E$) but at mid latitude geomagnetically ($50.62^{\circ}S,\;7.51^{\circ}E$). It is therefore the strategic location to measure the temperatures of the thermosphere in the Southern Hemisphere associated with both solar and geomagnetic activities. In this study, we analyzed the observed temperatures inrelation to F10.7 and Kp indices to examine the effect of the solar and the geomagneticactivities on high-latitude neutral thermosphere. During the observing period, the solaractivity was at its minimum. The measured temperatures are usually in the range between about 600~1000 K with some seasonal variation and are higher than those predicted by semi-empirical model, VSH (Vector Spherical Harmonics) and empirical model, MSIS (Mass-Spectrometer-Incoherent-Scatter)-86.

  • In the concentric tube type recuperator, which is the most typical type of radiation recuperator, installed on the exhaust-secion of industrial furnace, air flows between the adiabatic outer tube and the inner tube in which exhausted gas flows with high temperature. The waste heat of the exhausted gas is transferred to the inner tube, and transferred from the inner tube to the flowing air. The heat transfer by radiation In the concentric tube type recuperator is modeled using spherical harmonics approximation, namely, P-N method and numerically analyzed considering the effect of dynamic flow field. The results are compared with the existing empirical data. In addition, a theoretical method is presented for the analysis of the heat transfer characteristics of a recuperator with a reradiator installed in the inner tube, which causes re-radiant in the inner tube, and the characteristics of the recuperator is analyszed and defined.

  • Purpose : High-resolution spiral-scan imaging is performed at 3 Tesla MRI system. Since the gradient waveforms for the spiral-scan imaging have lower slopes than those for the Echo Planar Imaging (EPI), they can be implemented with the gradient systems having lower slew rates. The spiral-scan imaging also involves less eddy currents due to the smooth gradient waveforms. The spiral-scan imaging method does not suffer from high specific absorption rate (SAR), which is one of the main obstacles in high field imaging for rf echo-based fast imaging methods such as fast spin echo techniques. Thus, the spiral-scan imaging has a great potential for the high-speed imaging in high magnetic fields. In this paper, we presented various high-resolution images obtained by the spiral-scan methods at 3T MRI system for various applications. Materials and Methods : High-resolution spiral-scan imaging technique is implemented at 3T whole body MRI system. An efficient and fast higher-order shimming technique is developed to reduce the inhomogeneity, and the single-shot and interleaved spiral-scan imaging methods are developed. Spin-echo and gradient-echo based spiral-scan imaging methods are implemented, and image contrast and signal-tonoise ratio are controlled by the echo time, repetition time, and the rf flip angles. Results : Spiral-scan images having various resolutions are obtained at 3T MRI system. Since the absolute magnitude of the inhomogeneity is increasing in higher magnetic fields, higher order shimming to reduce the inhomogeneity becomes more important. A fast shimming technique in which axial, sagittal, and coronal sectional inhomogeneity maps are obtained in one scan is developed, and the shimming method based on the analysis of spherical harmonics of the inhomogeneity map is applied. For phantom and invivo head imaging, image matrix size of about $100{\times}100$ is obtained by a single-shot spiral-scan imaging, and a matrix size of $256{\times}256$ is obtained by the interleaved spiral-scan imaging with the number of interleaves of from 6 to 12. Conclusion : High field imaging becomes increasingly important due to the improved signal-to-noise ratio, larger spectral separation, and the higher BOLD-based contrast. The increasing SAR is, however, a limiting factor in high field imaging. Since the spiral-scan imaging has a very low SAR, and lower hardware requirements for the implementation of the technique compared to EPI, it is suitable for a rapid imaging in high fields. In this paper, the spiral-scan imaging with various resolutions from $100{\times}100$ to $256{\times}256$ by controlling the number of interleaves are developed for the high-speed imaging in high magnetic fields.
