  • Due to continuous increase of electric power consumption, couple of resolutions for improving accuracy in power system like line separation are being studied. The increase of the power demand can cause problems such as supply difficulties of the electricity and broadband outages, failure, etc. When a fault occurs in the power system, a fault current also increases. Fault current creates problems like reduction of lifespan and failure on the power system. In order to resolve these problems, the reduction of initial fault current using the characteristics of superconducting element was applied to fault current limiter. We applied the system to high speed fault current limiter. We found that the superconducting element effectively reduced initial fault current and the fault current was limited by changing operation of high speed interrupter.

  • Our research team proposed a flux-offset type fault current limiter as a new limiter. The flux-offset type fault current limiter uses a fault current limit technology based on the flux offset principle of the primary and secondary windings of a transformer. Stable fault current limit characteristics were achieved through a preliminary study. However, it was discovered that the initial fault current was not limited. Therefore, in this paper, a high-speed interrupter and a superconducting element were separately applied to the secondary winding of the flux-offset type fault current limiter and the operating characteristics were comparatively analyzed. In the experiment, when the superconducting element was applied to the secondary winding of the transformer, the initial fault current was limited while the limitation in the operation time was further shortened.

  • In this paper the high-speed fault current detector for superconducting fault current limiter is described. Detecting and interrupting the fault currents as quickly as possible is required in order not to exceed the thermal capacity of superconducting fault current limiter. A detecting method of an instantaneous fault current magnitude is adopted in the equipment described in this paper and a current signal through an analog/digital(A/D) converter would be compared with the reference in the digital signal processor(DSP). Around 20ms has elapsed for detecting the fault current. It is necessary to establish the appropriate trade-off between the reliability and detection speed.

  • Modem version of supersonic jet fighter aircraft must have been guaranteed appropriate controllability and stability in HAoA(High Angle of Attack). The HAoA flight control law have two parts, one is control law of departure prevention and the other is control law of departure recovery support. The control laws of departure prevention for advanced jet trainer consist of HAoA limiter, roll command limiter and rudder fader. The control laws of departure recovery support are consist of yaw-rate limiter and MPO(Manual Pitch Override) mode. The guideline of pitch rocking using MPO mode is simple, but operating skill of pitch rocking is very difficult by the pilot with inexperience of departure situation. Therefore, automatic deep stall recovery system is necessary. The system called the "Automatic Pitch Rocker System" or APRS, provided a pilot initiated automatic maneuver capable of an aircraft recoveries in situations of deep stall, speed and altitude. This paper addresses the design and validation for APRS to recovery of an deep stall without manual pitch rocking by the pilot. Also, this system is designed to recovery of speed, attitude and altitude after deep stall recovery using ATCS (Automatic Thrust Control System) and autopilot. Finally, this system is verified by real-time pilot evaluation using HQS (Handling Quality Simulator).

  • The electric power system of Kwangyang steel works needs to keep the parallel operation with the system of KOPEC(Korea Electric Power Corporation) for supplying the power with safety. Once it is separated from KOPEC due to an accident, it operates the automatic Mill trip system to prevent huge fluctuating loads from the serious frequency drop. In spite of that, it is recent situations that the continuous growth of electric loads facilitates the frequency drop. Therefore, this paper proposes a model of generator control system so as to quantitatively analyze the response characteristics to the frequency change under the single operation, and also suggests the strategy for minimizing the frequency changes. The simulation results show it is desirable to operate the generators by 3% speed droop and 10% load limiter.

  • With the increasing power demands, size of the fault current in electrical grids is steadily increasing, and it exceeds the breaking capacity of circuit breakers. To effectively cope with these problems, a high-speed interrupter was suggested. The high-speed interrupter provides fault current with a bypass to a fault current limiter in case of accidents and consequently, fault current can be restricted. In this study, behavioral characteristics of high-speed interrupter were analyzed by accident types occurred in a distribution system. When accidents occurred, a and b contact of the high-speed interrupter were turned-off and then, turned-on. Accordingly, fault current flowed to the circuit connected to a current limiting element, and the fault current limiter restricted fault current to within a half-cycle. Nevertheless, the behavior of the high-speed interrupter was slowed down by a switching surge. As a result, fault current was confirmed to be restricted not to within the anticipated half-cycle, but to after a half-cycle. Moreover, the behavioral characteristics of the high-speed interrupter changed not only by accident types, but by behaviors of R, S, and T phases. This was due to the errors in stroke lengths of the high-speed interrupters, which resulted in a slight time discrepancy among three interrupters. In addition, the switching behaviors of the b and a contact were confirmed not to have coincided due to the switching surge; b contact behaved first and a contact followed. because of this, accuracy of stroke length and switching surges through the solenoid suction increases may be necessary to resolve.

  • This research introduces the structural design and the validation results of the flexible high speed coupling for 2MW class wind turbine which transmit and cut off torque between gear box and generator. The high speed coupling requires electrical insulation to prevent electrical surface damages on gear box. Therefore glass fiber reinforced plastics is applied to absorb the vibration and deformation of power train and to transmit required torque. Finite element analysis was performed to optimize the thickness and accumulation number of glass fiber reinforced plastics. Torque limiter which cut off the abnormal torque is designed in frictional disc type. The design of the coupling was validated with the performance test of prototype.

  • Motivated by the high-resolution properties of high-order Weighted Essentially Non-Oscillatory (WENO) and flux limiter (FL) for steep-gradient problems and the robust convergence of Jacobian-free Newton-Krylov (JFNK) methods for nonlinear systems, the preconditioned JFNK fully implicit high-order WENO and FL schemes are proposed to solve the transient two-phase two-fluid models. Specially, the second-order fully-implicit BDF2 is used for the temporal operator and then the third-order WENO schemes and various flux limiters can be adopted to discrete the spatial operator. For the sake of the generalization of the finite-difference-based preconditioning acceleration methods and the excellent convergence to solve the complicated and various operational conditions, the random vector instead of the initial condition is skillfully chosen as the solving variables to obtain better sparsity pattern or more positions of non-zero elements in this paper. Finally, the WENO_JFNK and FL_JFNK codes are developed and then the two-phase steep-gradient problem, phase appearance/disappearance problem, U-tube problem and linear advection problem are tested to analyze the convergence, computational cost and efficiency in detailed. Numerical results show that WENO_JFNK and FL_JFNK can significantly reduce numerical diffusion and obtain better solutions than traditional methods. WENO_JFNK gives more stable and accurate solutions than FL_JFNK for the test problems and the proposed finite-difference-based preconditioning acceleration methods based on the random vector can significantly improve the convergence speed and efficiency.

  • A superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL) is a power device that exploits superconducting transition to control currents and enhances the flexibility, stability and reliability of the power system within a few milliseconds. With a high phase transition speed, high critical current densities and little AC loss, high-temperature superconducting (HTS) wires are suitable for a resistive-type SFCL. However, HTS wires due to the lack of optimization research are rather inefficient to directly apply to a fault current limiter in terms of the design and capacity, for the existing method relied the characteristics. Therefore, in order to develop a suitable wire for an SFCL, it is necessary to enhance critical current uniformity, select optimal stabilizer materials and conducted research on the development of uniform stabilizer layering technology. The high temperature superconducting wires manufactured by this study get an average critical current of 804 A/12mm-width at the length of 710m; therefore, conducted research was able to secure economic performance by improving efficiency, reducing costs, and reducing size.
