In recent years research on HCI technology has been very active and speech recognition is being used as its typical method. Its recognition, however, is deteriorated with the increase of surrounding noise. To solve this problem, studies concerning the multimodal HCI are being briskly made. This paper describes automated lipreading for bimodal speech recognition on the basis of image- and speech information. It employs audio-visual DB containing 1,074 words from 70 voice and tri-viseme as a recognition unit, and state tied HMM as a recognition model. Performance of automated recognition of 22 to 1,000 words are evaluated to achieve word recognition of 60.5% in terms of 22word recognizer.
Spontaneous speech is ungrammatical as well as serious phonological variations, which make recognition extremely difficult, compared with read speech. In this paper, for conversational speech recognition, we analyze the transcriptions of the real conversational speech, and then classify the characteristics of conversational speech in the speech recognition aspect. Reflecting these features, we obtain the baseline system for conversational speech recognition. The classification consists of long duration of silence, disfluencies and phonological variations; each of them is classified with similar features. To deal with these characteristics, first, we update silence model and append a filled pause model, a garbage model; second, we append multiple phonetic transcriptions to lexicon for most frequent phonological variations. In our experiments, our baseline morpheme error rate (WER) is 31.65%; we obtain MER reductions such as 2.08% for silence and garbage model, 0.73% for filled pause model, and 0.73% for phonological variations. Finally, we obtain 27.92% MER for conversational speech recognition, which will be used as a baseline for further study.
This study investigates the fine-tuning of large-scale Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) models, specifically OpenAI's Whisper model, for domain-specific applications using the KsponSpeech dataset. The primary research questions address the effectiveness of targeted lexical item emphasis during fine-tuning, its impact on domain-specific performance, and whether the fine-tuned model can maintain generalization capabilities across different languages and environments. Experiments were conducted using two fine-tuning datasets: Set A, a small subset emphasizing specific lexical items, and Set B, consisting of the entire KsponSpeech dataset. Results showed that fine-tuning with targeted lexical items increased recognition accuracy and improved domain-specific performance, with generalization capabilities maintained when fine-tuned with a smaller dataset. For noisier environments, a trade-off between specificity and generalization capabilities was observed. This study highlights the potential of fine-tuning using minimal domain-specific data to achieve satisfactory results, emphasizing the importance of balancing specialization and generalization for ASR models. Future research could explore different fine-tuning strategies and novel technologies such as prompting to further enhance large-scale ASR models' domain-specific performance.

In this paper, we propose the method that extracts the speech feature using the hearing model through signal precessing techniques. The proposed method includes following procedure ; normalization of the short-time speech block by its maximum value, multi-resolution analysis using the discrete wavelet transformation and re-synthesize using thediscrete inverse wavelet transformation, differentiation after analysis and synthesis, full wave rectification and integration. In order to verify the performance of the proposed speech feature in the speech recognition task, korean digita recognition experiments were carried out using both the dTW and the VQ-HMM. The results showed that, in case of using dTW, the recognition rates were 99.79% and 90.33% for speaker-dependent and speaker-independent task respectively and, in case of using VQ-HMM, the rate were 96.5% and 81.5% respectively. And it indicates that the proposed speech feature has the potentials to use as a simple and efficient feature for recognition task.
This paper describes a robust speech recognition technique by reconstructing spectral components mismatched with a training environment. Although the cluster-based reconstruction method can compensate the unreliable components from reliable components in the same spectral vector by assuming an independent, identically distributed Gaussian-mixture process of training spectral vectors, the presented method exploits the temporal dependency of speech to reconstruct the components by introducing a hidden-Markov-model prior which incorporates an internal state transition plausible for an observed spectral vector sequence. The experimental results indicate that the described method can provide temporally consistent reconstruction and further improve recognition performance on average compared to the conventional method.

The Voice recognition is one of convenient methods to communicate between human and robots. This study proposes a speech recognition method using speech recognizers based on Hidden Markov Model (HMM) with a combination of techniques to enhance a biped robot control. In the past, Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) and Dynamic Time Wrapping (DTW) were used, however, currently they are less commonly applied to speech recognition systems. This Research confirms that the HMM, an accepted high-performance technique, can be successfully employed to model speech signals. High recognition accuracy can be obtained by using HMMs. Apart from speech modeling techniques, multiple feature extraction methods have been studied to find speech stresses caused by emotions and the environment to improve speech recognition rates. The procedure consisted of 2 parts: one is recognizing robot commands using multiple HMM recognizers, and the other is sending recognized commands to control a robot. In this paper, a practical voice recognition system which can recognize a lot of task commands is proposed. The proposed system consists of a general purpose microprocessor and a useful voice recognition processor which can recognize a limited number of voice patterns. By simulation and experiment, it was illustrated the reliability of voice recognition rates for application of the manufacturing process.
One of major problems in speech recognition is performance degradation due to the mismatch between the training and test environments. Recently, Stereo-based Piecewise LInear Compensation for Environments (SPLICE), which is frame-based bias removal algorithm for cepstral enhancement using stereo training data and noisy speech model as a mixture of Gaussians, was proposed and showed good performance in noisy environments. In this paper, we propose several methods to improve the conventional SPLICE. First we apply Cepstral Mean Subtraction (CMS) as a preprocessor to SPLICE, instead of applying it as a postprocessor. Secondly, to compensate residual distortion after SPLICE processing, two-stage SPLICE is proposed. Thirdly we employ phonetic information for training SPLICE model. According to experiments on the Aurora 2 database, proposed method outperformed the conventional SPLICE and we achieved a 50% decrease in word error rate over the Aurora baseline system.
We propose a method to automatically predict Alzheimer's disease from speech data using the ChatGPT large language model. Alzheimer's disease patients often exhibit distinctive characteristics when describing images, such as difficulties in recalling words, grammar errors, repetitive language, and incoherent narratives. For prediction, we initially employ a speech recognition system to transcribe participants' speech into text. We then gather opinions by inputting the transcribed text into ChatGPT as well as a prompt designed to solicit fluency evaluations. Subsequently, we extract embeddings from the speech, text, and opinions by the pretrained models. Finally, we use a classifier consisting of transformer blocks and linear layers to identify participants with this type of dementia. Experiments are conducted using the extensively used ADReSSo dataset. The results yield a maximum accuracy of 87.3% when speech, text, and opinions are used in conjunction. This finding suggests the potential of leveraging evaluation feedback from language models to address challenges in Alzheimer's disease recognition.

SNN (Spiking Neural Network) operating in neuromorphic architecture was created by mimicking human neural networks. Neuromorphic computing based on neuromorphic architecture requires relatively lower power than typical deep learning techniques based on GPUs. For this reason, research to support various artificial intelligence models using neuromorphic architecture is actively taking place. This paper conducted a performance analysis of the speech recognition model based on neuromorphic architecture according to the speech data preprocessing technique. As a result of the experiment, it showed up to 84% of speech recognition accuracy performance when preprocessing speech data using the Fourier transform. Therefore, it was confirmed that the speech recognition service based on the neuromorphic architecture can be effectively utilized.
Today's state-of the-art speech recognition systems typically use continuous distribution hidden Markov models with the mixtures of Gaussian distributions. To obtain higher recognition accuracy, the hidden Markov models typically require huge number of Gaussian distributions. Such speech recognition systems have problems that they require too much memory to run, and are too slow for large applications. Many approaches are proposed for the design of compact acoustic models. One of those models is subspace distribution clustering hidden Markov model. Subspace distribution clustering hidden Markov model can represent original full-space distributions as some combinations of a small number of subspace distribution codebooks. Therefore, how to make the codebook is an important issue in this approach. In this paper, we report some experimental results on various quantization methods to make more accurate models.
