For the purpose of speaker normalization in speaker independent speech recognition systems, experiments are conducted on a method based on Gaussian mixture model(GMM). The method, which is an improvement of the previous study based on vector quantizer, consists of modeling the probability distribution of canonical feature vectors by a GMM with an appropriate number of clusters, and of estimating the warp factor of a test speaker by making use of the obtained probabilistic model. The purpose of this study is twofold: improving the existing ML based methods, and comparing the performance of what is called 'soft decision' method with that of the previous study based on vector quantizer. The effectiveness of the proposed method is investigated by recognition experiments on the TIMIT corpus. The experimental results showed that a little improvement could be obtained tv adjusting the number of clusters in GMM appropriately.

Generally, a mobile robot is moved by original input programs. However, it is very hard for a non-expert to change the program generating the moving path of a mobile robot, because he doesn't know almost the teaching command and operating method for driving the robot. Therefore, the teaching method with speech command for a handicapped person without hands or a non-expert without an expert knowledge to generate the path is required gradually. In this study, for easily teaching the moving path of the autonomous mobile robot, the autonomous mobile robot with the function of speech recognition is developed. The use of human voice as the teaching method provides more convenient user-interface for mobile robot. To implement the teaching function, the designed robot system is composed of three separated control modules, which are speech preprocessing module, DC servo motor control module, and main control module. In this study, we design and implement a speaker dependent isolated word recognition system for creating moving path of an autonomous mobile robot in the unknown environment. The system uses word-level Hidden Markov Models(HMM) for designated command vocabularies to control a mobile robot, and it has postprocessing by neural network according to the condition based on confidence score. As the spectral analysis method, we use a filter-bank analysis model to extract of features of the voice. The proposed word recognition system is tested using 33 Korean words for control of the mobile robot navigation, and we also evaluate the performance of navigation of a mobile robot using only voice command.
In speech recognition for real-world applications, the performance degradation due to the mismatch introduced between training and testing environments should be overcome. In this paper, to reduce this mismatch, we provide a hybrid method of spectral subtraction and residual noise masking. We also employ multiple model approach to obtain improved robustness over various noise environments. In this approach, multiple model sets are made according to several noise masking levels and then a model set appropriate for the estimated noise level is selected automatically in recognition phase. According to speaker independent isolated word recognition experiments in car noise environments, the proposed method using model sets with only two masking levels reduced average word error rate by 60% in comparison with spectral subtraction method.
In this paper, a gain-adapted speech recognition method in noise is developed in the time domain. Noise is assumed to be colored. To cope with the notable nonstationary nature of speech signals such as fricative, glides, liquids, and transition region between phones, the nonstationary autoregressive (NAR) hidden Markov model (HMM) is used. The nonstationary AR process is represented by using polynomial functions with a linear combination of M known basis functions. When only noisy signals are available, the estimation problem of noise inevitably arises. By using multiple Kalman filters, the estimation of noise model and gain contour of speech is performed. Noise estimation of the proposed method can eliminate noise from noisy speech to get an enhanced speech signal. Compared to the conventional ARHMM with noise estimation, our proposed NAR-HMM with noise estimation improves the recognition performance about 2-3%.

In this paper, we develop a hybrid speaker recognition system [1] enhanced by pre-recognizer and post-recognizer. The pre-recognizer consists of general speech recognition systems and the post-recognizer is a pitch detection system using adapted continuous wavelet transform (ACWT) to improve the performance of the hybrid speaker recognition system. Two schemes to design ACWT is considered. One is the scheme to search basis library covering the whole band of speech fundamental frequency (speech pitch). The other is the scheme to determine which one is the best basis. Information cost functional is used for the criterion for the latter. ACWT is robust enough to classify the pitch of speech very well, even though the speech signal is badly damaged by environmental noises.
In this paper we propose an effective feature compensation scheme based on the speech model in order to achieve robust speech recognition. The proposed feature compensation method is based on parallel combined mixture model (PCMM). The previous PCMM works require a highly sophisticated procedure for estimation of the combined mixture model in order to reflect the time-varying noisy conditions at every utterance. The proposed schemes can cope with the time-varying background noise by employing the interpolation method of the multiple mixture models. We apply the‘data-driven’method to PCMM tot move reliable model combination and introduce a frame-synched version for estimation of environments posteriori. In order to reduce the computational complexity due to multiple models, we propose a technique for mixture sharing. The statistically similar Gaussian components are selected and the smoothed versions are generated for sharing. The performance is examined over Aurora 2.0 and speech corpus recorded while car-driving. The experimental results indicate that the proposed schemes are effective in realizing robust speech recognition and reducing the computational complexities under both simulated environments and real-life conditions.
An automatic pronunciation correction system provides learners with correction guidelines for each mispronunciation. For this purpose we develope a speech recognizer which automatically classifies pronunciation errors when Koreans speak a foreign language. In order to develope the methods for automatic assessment of pronunciation quality, we propose a language model based score as a machine score in the speech recognizer. Experimental results show that the language model based score had higher correlation with human scores than that obtained using the conventional log-likelihood based score.
In this paper, a new automatic speech recognition (ASR) was proposed where ultrasonic doppler signals were used, instead of conventional speech signals. The proposed method has the advantages over the conventional speech/non-speech-based ASR including robustness against acoustic noises and user comfortability associated with usage of the non-contact sensor. In the method proposed herein, 40 kHz ultrasonic signal was radiated toward to the mouth and the reflected ultrasonic signals were then received. Frequency shift caused by the doppler effects was used to implement ASR. The proposed method employed multi-channel ultrasonic signals acquired from the various locations, which is different from the previous method where single channel ultrasonic signal was employed. The PCA(Principal Component Analysis) coefficients were used as the features of ASR in which hidden markov model (HMM) with left-right model was adopted. To verify the feasibility of the proposed ASR, the speech recognition experiment was carried out the 60 Korean isolated words obtained from the six speakers. Moreover, the experiment results showed that the overall word recognition rates were comparable with the conventional speech-based ASR methods and the performance of the proposed method was superior to the conventional signal channel ASR method. Especially, the average recognition rate of 90 % was maintained under the noise environments.

In this paper, we propose a rule-based model to correct errors in a speech recognition result in the mobile device environment. The proposed model considers the mobile device environment with limited resources such as processing time and memory, as follows. In order to minimize the error correction processing time, the proposed model removes some processing steps such as morphological analysis and the composition and decomposition of syllable. Also, the proposed model utilizes the longest match rule selection method to generate one error correction candidate per point, assumed that an error occurs. For the purpose of deploying memory resource, the proposed model uses neither the Eojeol dictionary nor the morphological analyzer, and stores a combined rule list without any classification. Considering the modification and maintenance of the proposed model, the error correction rules are automatically extracted from a training corpus. Experimental results show that the proposed model improves 5.27% on the precision and 5.60% on the recall based on Eojoel unit for the speech recognition result.

This paper presents a speech recognition database verification system using speech measures, and describes a speech measure extraction algorithm which is applied to this system. In our previous study, to produce an effective speech quality measure for the system, we propose a combination of various speech measures which are highly correlated with WER (Word Error Rate). The new combination of various types of speech quality measures in this study is more effective to predict the speech recognition performance compared to each speech measure alone. In this paper, we increase the system independency by employing GMM acoustic score instead of HMM score which is obtained by a secondary speech recognition system. The combination with GMM score shows a slightly lower correlation with WER compared to the combination with HMM score, however it presents a higher relative improvement in correlation with WER, which is calculated compared to the correlation of each speech measure alone.
