Estimation of Spectrum Requirements for 3G Mobile Communications Based on the Analysis of Korean Mobile Communications Traffic (국내 이동 통신 트래픽 분석에 의한 3G 이동 통신 주파수 소요량 산출)

  • Recently, as the 3G services of Korea have stepped into the developing stage and the traffic has been rapidly increasing, the spectrum requirements have been getting very large. Therefore spectrum reforming is considered actively and firstly exact methodology of spectrum requirement estimation is needed. But existing methodology depends on the future's service forecast than the present substantial data. This paper proposed the exact methodology of spectrum requirement estimation is based on the real data. So this paper analyzed the characteristics of Korean mobile communication traffic based on the real data and the algorithm suitable for estimation of spectrum requirements for 3G mobile communications, and calculated the parameters needed to estimate the spectrum requirements. Based on the traffic parameters of December 2007, simulations to Bet the estimation of annual spectrum requirements were implemented for the two different cases: one of which is 44 % annual increase in the data traffic and the other is 21 % annual increase. The simulation results show 90 MHz for the first case and 60 MHz for the second case in December 2011.

  • ITU-R recommends general methodology to provide current and future mobile communication services and 12 parameters to calculate terrestrial spectrum requirements. In this paper we analyzed 12 parameters suggested by ITU-R Recommendation and provided a method to determine a specific parameter value in a specific region. We calculated spectrum requirements and network resources for year 2010 in Korean mobile environment by applying parameter values acquired in parameter analysis method of this paper. And we analyzed the variation of spectrum requirements by calculating spectrum requirements depending on variation of parameters for future mobile communication services.

  • For Effective and systematic response to disasters, needs of broadband multimedia services in wireless communication of PPDR(public protection and disaster relief) is increasing gradually. Recently in Korea, by the digital television transition, Korea Communications Commission is considering whether the freed spectrum can assign additional spectrum of PPDR or not. In this paper, we were defined the input parameters, were estimated the spectrum of requirements for Korean wireless communication of PPDR based on M.1390 methodology recommended by ITU-R.

  • In South Korea, to effective and systematic response to disasters, the government will build wireless communication network for PPDR(Public Protection and Disaster Relief) on a national level by 2015. To do it, as MOPAS(Ministry of Public Administration and Security) requested the new frequency assignment for PPDR, KCC(Korea Communications Commission) has been examined new frequency allocations about TETRA and WiBro technologies. In this paper, we were defined the technical parameters, were estimated the spectrum of TETRA-TRS requirements for Korean wireless communication of PPDR based on M.2033 methodology recommended by ITU-R.

  • In this paper, an efficient training symbol design with m-sequence is proposed for the MIMO-OFDM based next generation wireless transmission system which supports gigabits per second data rate. In the traditional blute force method, the preamble design is based on the case by case comparison with the system requirements. This paper discusses a training symbol design methodology for the MIMO-OFDM system based on the m-sequence which has been widely used in the spread spectrum communication areas due to its good correlation characteristics. Also the step-by-step design and performance verification method within the limited search space is discussed. The proposed method targets the design of the training symbol which satisfies system requirements for the packet based MIMO-OFDM wireless communication system including automatic gain control(AGC), timing synchronization, frequency and sampling offset estimation, and MIMO channel estimation.

An Approach for Identifying the Temperature of Inductance Motors by Estimating the Rotor Slot Harmonic Based on Model Predictive Control

  • In order to satisfy the urgent requirements for the overheating protection of induction motors, an approach that can be used to identify motor temperature has been proposed based on the rotor slots harmonic (RSH) in this paper. One method to accomplish this is to improve the calculation efficiency of the RSH by predicting the stator winding distribution harmonic order by analyzing the harmonics spectrum. Another approach is to increase the identification accuracy of the RSH by suppressing the influence of voltage flashes or current surges during temperature estimation based on model predictive control (MPC). First, an analytical expression of the stator inductance is extracted from a steady-state positive sequence motor equivalent circuit model developed from the rotor flux field orientation. Then a procedure that applies MPC for reducing the identification error of the rotor temperature caused by voltage sag or swell of the power system is given. Due to this work, the efficiency and accuracy of the RSH have been significantly improved and validated our experiments. This work can serves as a reference for the on-line temperature monitoring and overheating protection of an induction motor.

  • Cognitive radio (CR) technology based on geo-location database access approach and/or wideband spectrum sensing approach is absolutely vital in order to recognize available frequency bands in white spaces (WSs), and efficiently utilize shared spectrums. This paper presents a new structure for the TVWS database access protocol implementation based on Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) Protocol to Access WS database (PAWS). A wideband compressive spectrum sensing (WCSS) scheme using a modulated wideband converter is also proposed for the TVWS utilization. The developed database access protocol technology which is adopted in both the TV band device (TVBD) and the TVWS database operates well in the TV frequency bands. The proposed WCSS shows a stable performance in false alarm probability irrespective of noise variance estimation error as well as provides signal detection probabilities greater than 95%. This paper also investigates Federal Communications Commision (FCC) regulatory requirements of TVWS database as well as European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) policy related to TVWS database. A standardized protocol to achieve interoperability among multiple TVBDs and TVWS databases, which is currently prepared in the IETF, is discussed.
