A CCD camera for the BOES (Bohyunsan Observatory Echelle Spectrograph) has been developed. The camera consists of a 2048 ${\times}$ 4096 format CCD, a SDSU Gen-I CCD controller, and a continuous flow cryostat (CFC) designed by the ESO. In order to control the CCD under SDSU Gen-I controller, the voltage level of all the biases and clocks were lowered by -6V. The CFC showed cooling time of about 10 hour, after which the chip temperature settled down with variation less than ${\pm}1^{\circ}C$. The final chip temperature is around -105$^{\circ}C$ with the setting value for the CFC as -170$^{\circ}C$.

Ground-based solar observations have several merits such as wider field of view and higher time cadence than those of satellite observations. The Domeless Solar Telescope of Hida Observatory is designed to acquire solar surface images at the highest possible spatial resolution using two types of spectrographs: a vertical spectrograph with the highest wavelength resolution in the world, and a horizontal spectrograph that can take images of the sun in multi-wavelength over the entire visible solar spectrum. The temporal variation of fine features such as chromospheric grains in the supergranulation cells and facular points in the network region has been obtained using DST Ca II K lines compared with Hinode Ca II H lines. This analysis is expected to provide a fundamental tool for research of diverse phenomena on the solar surface.
Five scientific instruments are planned on KAISTSAT-4 that is scheduled to be launched in 2002. A far ultra-violet imaging spectrograph and a set of space plasma instruments are currently being designed. The imaging spectrograph will make observations of astronomical objects and Earth's upper atmosphere. The plasma instrumentation is capable of fast measuring the thermal magnetosphere plasmas, cold ionospheric plasmas and the Earth's magnetic fields. Major system drivers and constraints on the payloads as well as the spacecraft are identified. A preliminary analysis of the K-4 mission has been undertaken with the system requirements that are derived from the system drivers. Detailed investigation shows that Sun-synchronous orbits with approximate altitudes of 800km are optimal to satisfy the identified requirements. Comparisons with other orbits of different inclinations are also shown. Four operation modes and a daily schedule of spacecraft maneuver are found from the Sun-synchronous orbital model. It is shown that the scientific objectives of K-4 can be achieved with moderate levels of design and operation risks.
We present a method to improve the RV (radial velocity) measurements accuracy by using telluric lines. Telluric lines are used to estimate the wavelength scale drift over the detector of the spectrograph. In the case of BOES, the Echelle spectrograph at BOAO (Bohyunsan Optical Astronomical Observatory), the wavelength scale drift can be several hundreds m/s over 24 hours. Due to the wavelength scale drift, the RV measurements accuracy of BOES is limited to several hundreds m/s. By estimating the wavelength scale drift by telluric lines, we can remove its effect to improve the RV measurements accuracy to about 40 m/s.
IGRINS (Immersion Grating Infrared Spectrometer) is a cross-dispersed high resolution near-infrared spectrograph whose primary disperser is a silicon immersion grating (SIG) and cross-dispersers are two volume phase holographic gratings (VPHG). IGRINS covers the full ranges of H and K astronomical wavelength bands at a single exposure with the spectral resolution of 40,000. The overall layout of the IGRINS Cryostat is a $960{\times}600{\times}380$ cubic millimeter rectangular box and the whole optical train is sitting on an $880{\times}520{\times}50\;mm^3$ rectangular Optical Bench. The total volume of the instrument has been revolutionarily reduced and remained compact for the spectral coverage and sensitivity of a high resolution spectrograph in infrared. We, in this presentation, introduce the design models, the structural and thermal analysis results of the mechanics and cryogenics of IGRINS.
Spectrophotometry of the night sky over Mount Bohyun is presented for the nearly entire visible wavelengths of $3600{\~}$8600{\AA}$. The data was obtained under moonless clear sky in February 2004 with the 1.8-m telescope and the long slit spectrograph. The sky spectrum shows a number of strong emission lines originated from light pollution, especially due to high pressure sodium lamps. When compared to the night sky of Kitt Peak, our sky continuum is 1 to 2 magnitude brighter at all wavelengths, the worst being around the broad emission region near 6000${\AA}$. The night sky spectrum presented here with almost complete line identifications is a useful reference for arc-independent wavelength calibrations to check the gravity flexure of the spectrograph and the wavelength shift between FeNeArHe arc frames and science frames.
Grating spectrograph observation in near-infrared bands requires wavelength calibrations. We first need to extract order-strips from the echellogram data using flat images, and then to correct the spatial distortions and wavelength scales of the order strips using calibration arc lamps or the telluric OH emission lines. For very high resolution spectrograph using echelle, however, the arc lamps do not have enough emission lines in the order-strips, so we usually use the OH lines for accurate wavelength calibrations in wavelengths shorter than 2.3 microns. In this poster, we present wavelength calibration methods for longer wavelength bands using the telluric absorption lines in early-type stellar spectra and the telluric atmospheric transmission models. This technique will be applied to the data reduction pipeline for the IGRINS.

We proceed to develop the control software of GMACS, which is a wide-field, multi-object, moderate-resolution optical spectrograph for the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT). Flexure Compensation System (FCS) prototype is one of the electronics and mechanical prototypes for GMACS. In this poster, we present the software design for the FCS prototype by using the software system modeling language, SysML. We also show two development tools to control the prototype that communicates via EtherCAT: using TwinCAT and Visual C++ on Windows 10, and GMT Software Development Kit (SDK) and C++ on Linux. We discuss the way to design the GMACS control software, which would not depend on the development tools.

We present the control software and its development process for a prototype of the Camera and Grating Articulation System (CGAS) for GMACS, a wide-field, multi-object, moderate-resolution optical spectrograph for the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT). The CGAS prototype is currently designed for the camera articulation controller as a miniature model of the GMACS. The camera articulation package (CAP) is a software that controls two stepper motors to adjust the camera angle. The package is developed using Visual C++ and runs on Windows 10. We discuss the architectural design and communication route between the high-end user software and the electronics hardware.
Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) is developing a coronagraph to measure the coronal electron density, temperature, and speed utilizing spectral change of the K-corona around 400 nm. However, near UV light is more affected by atmospheric effect on the ground than visible light. For the total solar eclipse on July 2 2019, KASI organized an expedition team to test the possibility of the similar measurement scheme in the visible light. The observation site was in Las Flores, San Juan, Argentina. We built an imaging spectrograph using micro lenslet array and grism, named Coronal Integral Field Spectrograph (CorIFS). In addition, images of white light corona, wide field background, and all sky were taken with various camera settings. We present the preliminary results of the expedition.
