FISS Observation of Bright Rims of Solar Filaments

  • Rims of solar filaments often appear brighter than the background chromosphere, but their physical nature is still poorly known. Last year, we observed a filament with a bright rim. The rim was bright in H alpha but not in Ca II 8542 line. Using the cloud model, we inferred physical parameters of the region from the spectral profiles. As a result, we found that the Doppler width of the H alpha line is very large, which implies temperature as high as 50000K. In addition, the value of the source function of the H alpha line is 0.7 times the continuum intensity of background profile. These results suggest that the bright rims might be a region of intense heating, probably associated with a current sheet. To further investigate this possibility, we carried out more observations this summer. We will present new results obtained from the analysis of these observations and discuss the physical implication of these measurements on the nature of bright rims and the filaments.

Under-Developed and Under-Utilized Eclipsing Binary Model Capabilities

  • Existing but largely unused binary star model capabilities are examined. An easily implemented scheme is parameterization of starspot growth and decay that can stimulate work on outer convection zones and their dynamos. Improved precision in spot computation now enhances analysis of very precise data. An existing computational model for blended spectral line profiles is accurate for binary system effects but needs to include damping, thermal Doppler, and other intrinsic broadening effects. Binary star ephemerides had been found exclusively from eclipse timings until recently, but now come also from whole light and radial velocity curves. A logical further development will be to expand these whole curve solutions to include eclipse timings. An attenuation model for circumstellar clouds, with several absorption and scattering mechanisms, has been applied only once, perhaps because the model clouds have fixed locations. However the clouds could be made to move dynamically and be combined into moving streams and disks. An area of potential interest is polarization curve analysis, where incentive for modeling could follow from publication of observed polarization curves. Other recent advances include direct single step solutions for temperatures of both stars of an eclipsing binary and third body kinematics from combined light and velocity curves.

공생별 Z And의 선윤곽 분석 (An Analysis of the Symbiotic Star Z And Line Profile)

  • 분해능이 ${\Delta}{\lambda}{\sim}-0.1{\AA}$인 고분산 분광기를 사용하여 공생별 Z Andromedae (And)의 분광자료를 연구하였다. 분광 관측은 (1) 2001년 8월 30일(위상 ${\Phi}$=0.77)과 2002년 8월 12일(위상 ${\Phi}$ =0.22)에 Lick 천문대의 Hamilton Echelle Spectrograph (HES)를 사용하여, 1800초와 3600초 노출의 고분산 자료를 얻었으며, (2) 2009년 10월 21일(위상 ${\Phi}$=0.70)에는 보현산 천문대의 Bohyunsan Echelle Spectrograph (BOES)를 사용하여 1200초 노출 시간의 고분산 자료를 얻었다. 약 $3600{\AA}-9500{\AA}$파장대의 HES와 BOES 관측 자료로 부터 HI, HeI, HeII에 대한 방출선을 선택하여 분석하였다. 이 선들의 선 윤곽 분석 작업을 통해 2개 또는 3개로 분리시키고, 위상별로 각 성분이 어떤 지역에서 형성되고, 백색왜성과 적색거성의 궤도 운동과 어떠한 관련이 있는지를 조사하였다. 라만 산란(Raman scattering)된 $H{\alpha}$선 선폭 및 HI, HeI, HeII의 위상별 변화를 보이는 방출선의 특성으로부터, 방출선들은 백색왜성 주위를 감싸는 강착원반과 이 원반 안의 두 라그랑지안(Lagrangian) 포인트 $L_1$$L_2$지역에서 주로 생성된 것으로 결론지었다. Z And는 활동성이 2009년과 2001년에 가장 활발했고, 2002년의 선 윤곽은 매우 복잡한 양상을 보임에도 불구하고, 활동성은 비교적 조용하였음을 암시하고 있다.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a radiographic estimate of osseous fractal dimension and power spectrum of 2D discrete Fourier transform is useful in the characterization of structural changes in bone. Ten specimens of bone were decalcified in fresh 50 ml solutions of 0.1 N hydrochloric acid solution at cummulative timed periods of 0 and 90 minutes. and radiographed from 0 degree projection angle controlled by intraoral parelleling device. I performed one-dimensional variance. fractal analysis of bony profiles and 2D discrete Fourier transform. The results of this study indicate that variance and fractal dimension of scan line pixel intensities decreased significantly in decalcified groups but Fourier spectral analysis didn't discriminate well between control and decalcified specimens.

SPECTROSCOPIC ANALYSIS OF THE RS CVn STAR EI Eri

  • We present results of a new high-resolution spectroscopic study of the RS CVn-type binary system EI Eridani (HD26337). We used high S/N ratio LSD profiles to measure a new RV orbit of the primary component and new orbital parameters. We found evidence of strong spectral line profile variations at time intervals indicating the existence of short-lived (few days) spots on the surface of the primary component. We measured a projected rotation velocity of star of 53.2 km/s.

행성상 성운 NGC 6881의 운동학적 특성과 기하학적 구조 (Kinematics and Geometrical Structure of the Planetary Nebula NGC 6881)

  • 행성상성운 NGC 6881은 4극자형태를 이루고 있고 JET이 영상에 나타난다. Lick 천문대에 있는 Hamilton Echelle Spectrograph(HES)을 사용하여 관측한 가시광 영역의 방출선 스펙트럼의 선윤곽을 연구하였다. 우리가 연구하는 HES 분광 자료는 직경이 4초각인 영역의 안쪽에서 관측된 것이다. IRAF와 StarLink/Dipso분석프로그램을 사용하여 HI, HeI, HeII, [OIII], [NII], [ArIII], [SII], [SIII] 등의 강한 선들의 선윤곽을 통해 팽창속도를 얻었다. HI선의 경우 단일 정상을 보이는 반면, He과 다른 금지선들은 두 개의 정상 분포가 겹치는 특성을 보였다. 가스 유출 속도는 중심별의 복사압에 의해 바깥쪽으로 갈수록 가속되는 것으로 분석되었다. 우리는 팽창속도자료를 통해, HST 영상에서 보여진 중심부분의 세 개의 고리는 양극콘(HI 선등에 나타남)과 고리(He, [SIII]선에 특성이 보임)의 복합 구조가 투영된 것으로 결론지었다.

인공위성관측과 지상관측에 의한 Be성과 B성의 연구 (Ground-based and On-satellite Observations of Be and B Stars)

  • 연세대학교 천문대에서 1983~1987 기간에 Be 성 $\gamma$ Cas을 총 31일 밤 광전측광관측을 하여 312개의 UBV관측점을 얻었다. 우리가 얻은 자료 중에서 비교적 관측시간이 길었던 5일분의 자료로, V, B-V, U-B광도 곡선을 만들었고, $\gamma$Case 의 일반적인 측광학적 특성을, V/R번화와 최근 IUE 인공위성관측에서 나타난 high velocity narrow component(hvnc)의 시기와 관련시켜 검토하였다. 또한, $\epsilon$ Per는 $H\beta$선의 모양(line, profile)이 심하게 변하는 이색적인 B형 별인데, 우리는 1984년에 IUE인공위성에서 관측한 이 별의 스펙트럼 image data 6개조를 분석하여 $H\beta$선에서와 같은 흡수선의 모양 변화가 UV영역의 SiIVsk CIV선에서도 일어나고 있는지를 비교검토한 결과, 이 6개 자료에서는 어떤 변화도 발견하지 못했다.

NEAR-IR PHOTOMETRIC AND OPTICAL SPECTROSCOPIC STUDY OF THE FU ORIONIS OBJECT V582 AURIGAE

  • We carried out near-IR photometric and optical spectroscopic observations of V582 Aur, which is a FU Orionis type object, to investigate any periodic and/or aperiodic variations. We obtained light curves on the scale of a night and a year, in J, H and Ks bands with KASINICS (KASI Near Infrared Camera System) attached to the BOAO (Bohyun-san Optical Astronomy Observatory) 1.8-m reflector in Youngcheon, South Korea and examined photometric variations on the two time scales. So far we have not found any periodic brightness variations on the scale of a night. On the other hand, we have found that there seems to be a periodic brightness variation with a period of approximately 45 days. In addition, high-resolution optical spectroscopic observations of V582 Aur were performed from February 2013 to May 2014 with the high-resolution echelle spectrograph BOES attached to the BOAO 1.8-m reflector. We analyzed several spectral lines to understand the physical state of V582 Aur. The P Cyg profiles are clearly shown in the $H{\alpha}$ line and Na I D line.

High-resolution Near-infrared Spectroscopy of IRAS 16316-1540: Evidence of Accretion Burst

  • The high-resolution near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy can reveal the evidence of the accretion burst (e.g., the broadened absorption features produced by the Keplerian disk motion) although the moment of the outburst was not caught. The embedded protostar IRAS 16316-1540 observed with the Immersion Grating Infrared Spectrograph (IGRINS, $R={\Delta}{\lambda}/{\lambda}{\sim}45000$) shows the broad absorption features in atomic and CO transitions, as seen in FU Orionis objects (FUors), indicative of an outburst event. We examine whether the spectra of IRAS 16316-1540 arise from the rotating inner hot gaseous disk. Using the IGRINS spectral library, we show that the line profiles of IRAS 16316-1540 are more consistent with an M1.5 V template spectrum convolved with a disk rotation profile than the protostellar photosphere absorption features with a high stellar rotation velocity. We also note that the absorption features deviated from the expected line profile of the accretion disk model can be explained by a turbulence motion generated in the disk atmosphere. From previous observations that show the complex environment and the misaligned outflow axes in IRAS 16316-1540, we suggest that an impact of infalling clumpy envelope material against the disk induces the disk precession, causing the accretion burst from the inner disk to the protostar.

Kennicutt-Schmidt law with H I velocity profile decomposition in NGC 6822

  • We present H I gas kinematics and star formation activities of NGC 6822, a dwarf galaxy located in the Local Volume at a distance of ~ 490 kpc. We perform profile decomposition of the line-of-sight velocity profiles of the high-resolution (42.4" × 12" spatial; 1.6 km/s spectral) H I data cube taken with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). For this, we use a new tool, the so-called BAYGAUD (BAYesian GAUssian Decompositor) which is based on Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) techniques, allowing us to decompose a line-of-sight velocity profile into an optimal number of Gaussian components in a quantitative manner. We classify the decomposed H I gas components of NGC 6822 into bulk-narrow, bulk-broad, and non_bulk with respect to their velocity and velocity dispersion. We correlate their gas surface densities with the surface star formation rates derived using both GALEX far-ultraviolet and WISE 22 micron data to examine the impact of gas turbulence caused by stellar feedback on the Kennicutt-Schmidt (K-S) law. The bulk-narrow component that resides within r25 is likely to follow the linear extension of the Kennicutt-Schmidt (K-S) law for molecular hydrogen (H2) at the low gas surface density regime where H I is not saturated.
