Effect of aggregate type on heated self-compacting concrete

  • In this study, two types of aggregate were used for making self-compacting concrete. Standard cubic specimens were exposed to different temperatures. Seventy-two standard cylindrical specimens ($150{\times}300mm$) and Seventy-two cubic specimens (150 mm) were tested. Compressive strengths of the manufactured specimens at $23^{\circ}C$ were about 33 MPa to 40 MPa. The variable parameters among the self-compacting concrete specimens were of sand stone type. The specimens were exposed to 23, 100, 200, 400, 600, and $800^{\circ}C$ and their mechanical specifications were controlled. The heated specimens were subjected to the unconfined compression test with a quasi-static loading rate. The corresponding stress-strain curves and modulus of elasticity were compared. The results showed that, at higher temperatures, Scoria aggregate showed less sensitivity than ordinary aggregate. The concrete made with Scoria aggregate exhibited less strain. The heated self-compacting concrete had similar slopes before and after the peak. In fact, increasing heat produced gradual symmetrical stress-strain diagram span.

Seismic repair of exterior R/C beam-to-column joints using two-sided and three-sided jackets

  • The use of local two-sided and three-sided jacketing for the repair and strengthening of reinforced concrete beam-column joints damaged by severe earthquakes is investigated experimentally and analytically. Two exterior beam-column joint specimens ($O_1$ and $O_2$) were submitted to a series of cyclic lateral loads to simulate severe earthquake damage. The specimens were typical of existing older structures built in the 1960s and 1970s. The specimens were then repaired and strengthened by local two-sided or three-sided jacketing according to UNIDO Manual guidelines. The strengthened specimens ($RO_1$ and $RO_2$) were then subjected to the same displacement history as that imposed on the original specimens. The repaired and strengthened specimens exhibited significantly higher strength, stiffness and better energy dissipation capacity than the original specimens.

Experimental and numerical study of shear crack propagation in concrete specimens

  • A coupled experimental-numerical study on shear fracture in concrete specimens with different geometries is carried out. The crack initiation, propagation and final breakage of concrete specimens are experimentally studied under compression loading. The load-strain and the strength of the specimens are experimentally measured, indicating decreasing effects of the shear behavior on the failure load of the specimen. The effects of specimen geometries on the shear fracturing path in the concrete specimens are also investigate. Numerical models using an indirect boundary element method are made to evaluate the crack propagation paths of concrete specimens. These numerical results are compared with the performed experiments and are validated experimentally.

SNCM강의 피로균열의 발생 및 전파속도에 미치는 질화처리의 영향 (Effect of Nitriding on Fatigue Crack Initiation and Growth Rate in SNCM)

  • Effect of nitriding on fatigue crack initiation and growth rate has been studied on SNCM. Specimens were nitrided for 15 hr at $860^{\circ}C$. The fatigue limit of nitrided specimens was superior to that of annealed($860^{\circ}C$, 15 hr) specimens. Based on detailed observations of slip band and micro crack initiation, it is concluded that the excellent fatigue limit of nitrided specimens is attributed to improved slip initiation resistance by nitriding. The characteristic of fatigue crack growth rate of nitrided specimens was investigated and compared with those of annealed specimens. It was found that by nitriding the crack growth rate was markedly decreased and the threshold stress intensity factor range was improved. It is concluded that the excellent fatigue limit of nitrided specimens is also attributed to improved fatigue crack growth rate and threshold stress intensity factor range by nitriding.

Effect of Pretreatments and Drying Methods on Abnormal Shrinkage of Wood

  • Collapse is an abnormal shrinkage resulting in uneven, rough surfaces and/or warping of sawn timber. The maximum abnormal shrinkages of the oak and persimmon specimens were obtained by the quasi-equilibrium drying and were compared with the other drying methods. The effect of steaming and freezing treatments on the shrinkage of wood was also investigated. The Quasi-equilibrium drying used in this study was proved as a good tool to make the maximum abnormal shrinkage of wood. The maximum abnormal volumetric shrinkage possibly caused by collapse could be 16.3% and 14.3% for the oak and persimmon specimens, respectively. In general the steaming-treated specimens shrank less than the controls for the oak specimens, but did more for the persimmon specimens. The volumetric shrinkages of the freezing-treated specimens were more various between the drying methods than those of the control and steaming-treated specimens.

Influence of the inclined edge notches on the shear-fracture behavior in edge-notched beam specimens

  • A coupled experimental and numerical study of shear fracture in the edge-notched beam specimens of quasi-brittle materials (concrete-like materials) are carried out using four point bending flexural tests. The crack initiation, propagation and breaking process of beam specimens are experimentally studied by producing the double inclined edge notches with different ligament angles in beams under four point bending. The effects of ligament angles on the shear fracturing path in the bridge areas of the double edge-notched beam specimens are studied. Moreover, the influence of the inclined edge notches on the shear-fracture behavior of double edge-notched beam specimens which represents a practical crack orientation is investigated. The same specimens are numerically simulated by an indirect boundary element method known as displacement discontinuity method. These numerical results are compared with the performed experimental results proving the accuracy and validity of the proposed study.

  • Twelve column specimens were tested in compression, six were slab-column specimens and six were isolated column specimens. The slab column specimens were first tested to punching shear failure before the columns of the specimens were loaded axially. The effects of confinement from the surrounding slab on the axial capacity of the columns was investigated. Other parameters investigated were the placement of fiber-reinforced concrete in the slab and the concentration of flexural reinforcement in the column vicinity.

  • For imaging of concrete specimens using radar, principles of radar and signal processing are discussed. Experimental data obtained from radar measurement of two different concrete specimens at two different frequency bandwidths of 2~3.4 GHz, 3.4~5.8 GHz and these two frequencies are combined to show better imaging. A signal processing scheme has been implemented to visualize the concrete specimens. Through combined frequency, imaging results of concrete specimens were improved.

  • Fatigue damage to reinforced concrete bridge decks have been found in many bridges. Failure mode of most reinforced concrete decks is caused by local punching shear rather than flexural moment due to cumulated damage. In this study, mechanical degradation of unstrengthened and strengthened bridge deck specimens is experimentally investigated. The unstrengthened deck specimens were damaged under the pulsating loading condition. After the test, deteriorated deck specimens were strengthened with Carbon Fiber Sheet, then loaded to observe the improvement of the fatigue behavior. It is shown that fatigue damaged specimens are similar to real bridge rather than static damaged specimens.

  • This study was made to change dimension of self-curing resin by various curing technics. Specimens were fabricated 45 by 7 curing method. Six measurements(distances AB,BC,CD, AD, AC, and BD) were made of mold section and recorded with micrometer(1/20 mm). The results of the experiment were as follows : 1. The air pressure cured specimens exhibited more distoration than the bench-cured, watercured, and monomer atmosphere-cured specimens(P < 0.05). 2. The water pressure cured specimens exhibited more distoration sphere-cured specimens (P < 0.(15).
