Effect of specimen geometry and specimen preparation on the concrete compressive strength test

  • This paper discusses an experimental programme that was carried out to study the effects of specimen size-shape and type of moulds on the compressive strength of concrete. For this purpose, cube specimens with 150 mm dimensions, cylinder specimens with $150{\times}300mm$ dimensions, and prism specimens with $150{\times}150{\times}375mm$ dimensions were prepared. The experimental programme was carried out with several concrete compositions belonging to strength classes C20/25, C25/30, C30/37, C40/50 and C60/75. Furthermore, the test results were curve-fitted using the least squares method to obtain the new parameters for the modified size effect law.

  • TEM(Transmission Electrion microsopy) 투과전자현미경은 재료의 기초 구조 분석과 반도체 또는 생물시편의 미세 구조분석에 널리 사용되는 장비이다. TEM 분석은 필수적으로 목적에 부합되는 적절한 시편제작이 수반되어야 한다. 다양한 전자 현미경 시편 제작 방법 중 본 논문에서는 FIB(Focus Ion Beam)를 이용한 시편 제작법 중 시편에 입사되는 에너지와 이온 Gun과 시편과의 상호 각도, 이온 밀링 깊이 조절 등의 실험을 통하여 표면 손상 최소화를 벌크 웨이퍼와 패턴화된 시편에서 실험하였다. 최소화된 표면 영향성(약 5nm)을 패턴화된 시편에 구현하였다.

  • Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry(ESPI) using the Model 95 Ar laserm, a video system and an image processor was applied to the in-plane displacement measurements. Unlike traditional strain gauges or moire method, ESPI method requires no special surface preparation or attachments and can be measured in-plane displacement with no contact and real time. In this experiment wpecimen was loaded in parallel with a loadcell. The specimen was the cold rolled sdteel sheet of 2mm thickness, which was attached strain gauges. The study provides an example of how ESPI have been used to measure strain displacement in this specimen. The results measured by ESPI have been used to measure strain displacement in this specimen. The results measured by ESPI compare with the data which was measured by strain gauge method in tensile testing.

초음파 처리 활용 실시간 투과전자현미경 관찰용 금속 시편 전사 방법에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Method of Transferring Metal Specimens for Real-time Transmission Electron Microscopy using Ultrasonic Treatment)

  • Micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) based in-situ heating holders have been developed to enable high resolution imaging of heat treatment analysis. However, unlike the standard 3 mm metal disk specimens used in the furnace-based heating holder and general transmission electron microscopy holder, the MEMS-based in-situ heating holder requires thin specimens that can be penetrated by electrons to be transferred onto the MEMS chip. Previously, focused ion beam milling was used to transfer metal specimens, but it has the disadvantage of being expensive and the risk of specimen damage due to gallium ions. Therefore, in this study, we devised a method of transferring metallic materials by ultrasonic treatment using a transmission electron microscopy specimen made by electro jet polishing. A 3mm electropolished metal disk was placed in an appropriate solution, ultrasonicated, and then drop casted. The transfer of the specimen was successful, but it was confirmed that dislocations were formed inside the specimen due to ultrasonic treatment. This study provides a novel method for transferring metallic materials onto MEMS chips, which is cost-effective and less gallium ion damaging to the specimen. The results of this study can be used to improve the efficiency of heat treatment analysis using MEMS-based in-situ heating holders.

두개내 악성 생식세포종양의 압착도말 세포학적 소견 (Cytologic Features of Intracranial Germ Cell Tumors in Crush Preparation)

  • Intraoperative cytologic examination of intracranial tumors using crush preparation provides useful information in operative decision making. The diminutive nature of many biopsy specimens, particularly those obtained by stereotactic neurosurgical procedures emphasizes the importance of combining the cytologic smear method with conventional frozen section interpretation. The great advantage of the cytologic smear method resides in its suitability for the study of minute fragments of tissue, allowing retention of the majority of the specimen for optimal processing. We present the cytologic features of 3 cases of intracranial germ cell tumors(2 germinomas and 1 endodermal sinus tumor), using crush preparation during intraoperative diagnosis and compare them with histologic findings. The cytologic features of the germ cell tumors were similar to those of the respective gonadal counterparts. The cytologic differential diagnosis of both types of germ cell tumors is described.

Alumina Ceramics Reinforced by Ni-coated Chopped Alumina Fiber

  • Alumina composite reinforced by chopped alumina fiber was fabricated by filter-pressing the fiber slurry followed by the infiltration of alumina slurry. The chopped fiber was coated with nickel by electroless plating method. The green samples were densified by hot-pressing. Microstructures were studied by SEM and the mechanical properties such as bending strength and fracture toughness were measured. The resulting mechanical properties were analyzed in relation with processing parameters such as preform density and resulting microstructures. The load-displacement curve of the specimen with Ni interlayer but without Ni inclusion showed brittle fracture mode due to the direct contact between matrix and fiber. The load-displacement curve of the specimen with Ni interlayer and Ni inclusion in the matrix which is introduced by high applied pressure during specimen preparation showed non-brittle fracture mode due to the fiber pull-out and dutile phases in the matrix.

  • The green body was fabricated by a new forming method, pressureless powder packaing forming method, and the characteristics of sintered specimen were investigated. It was found that alumina ceramics prepared by the present method showed porous structure with narrow pore size distribution, and in case of abrasive powder sintered body, compared with dry-pressed specimen, had the nearly same density. Especially, the specimen prepared with spray-dried granules showed the characteristic that granules were not either deformed or fractured during forming and sintering process. Therefore, it was found that this new forming method was effective method in fabrication of porous ceramics on account of easy control of porosity and pore size and its high thermal stability.
