  • iFLASH System is new structural floor system which consists of sandwich panels filled with nano-composite. The nano-composite has low specific gravity and high bonding strength with steel plates. The bonding strength is one of important factors for structural performance of iFLASH System and it can further be improved by surface preparation such as blast metal cleaning. However, using none blast steel plates is recommended since surface preparation generates additional fabrication time and cost. In this study, a bonding strength test and bending experiment were conducted to check feasibility of applying none blast steel plates to iFLASH System. Moreover, stress in bonding plane between steel plates and nano-composite was analytically evaluated by finite element method. Consequently, flexural capacity of the specimen was 11% higher than theoretically calibrated value and its flexural behavior was structurally efficient without defect of bonding.

  • The index properties of cohesive soils play an important role to examine entire tendency of soil properties. Especially, the Atterberg limits have a good correlation with compression and shear strength of cohesive soils. However, these values strongly depend on their testing methods. In this study, for Pusan clays the Atterberg limits were peformed under different conditions; for example, four kinds of specimen preparation, two kinds of testing equipment, and four kinds of estimating method. And a laboratory vane test was peformed to compare the undrained shear strength with that of the fall cone test. As experimental results, the value of liquid limit performed for oven-dried sample, followed in ASTM D4318, underestimated by about 10% compared to those of another three methods, irrespective to the used equipments. But the value of plastic limit was not influenced by sample preparation methods and equipments. The liquid limits by one-point methods(Leroueil et al., 1996; Nagaraj et al., 1981) were agreed well with those of different methods. Finally, the undrained shear strength by laboratory vane test was relatively larger than that of fall cone test, and the relationship between both showed a bad trend.

  • With increasing demand for fast and reliable, yet economical data storage devices, the role of optical disk technology is becoming more important. In recent years, advanced laser technology combined with new materials has given the competitive edge over the traditional magnetic memory devices both in memory capacity and reliability of data retrieval. Continuing effort is being put into developing smaller and more complex structures for optical disks to increase their memory density. Characterization of such multilayered structure requires not only high spatial resolution for observation but also laborious specimen preparation. In this paper, the method of preparing optical disk specimens for TEM characterization is described in detail. The microstructural features in optical disks observed by TEM are also discussed.

  • Electronic speckle pattern interferometry(ESPI) using a CW laser, a video system and an image processor were applied to the in-plane displacement measurements. Unlike traditional strain gauges or Moire method, ESPI method requires no special surface preparation or attachments and it can be measured in-plane displacement without any contact and real time. In this experiment, specimen was loaded in paralled with a loa cell. The specimen was plance to which strain gauges was attached. The study provides an example of how ESPI have been used to measure displacement and strain distribution in this specimen. The results measured by ESPI were compared with the data which were measured by strain gauge method in tensile testing.

  • This study dealt with developing a new approach for finding properties which might represent rut resistance characteristics of asphalt mixture under static loading. Two aggregates, a normal asphalt (pen 60-80) and 5 polymer-modified asphalts were used in preparation of 12 dense-graded mixtures. Marshall mix design was used in determination of OAC and each mixture at the OAC was prepared for a newly-developed Kim test on Marshall specimen (S=10cm) and gyratory specimen (S=15cm), and for wheel tracking test. Kim test used Marshall loading frame and specimens were conditioned for 30min at $60^{\circ}C$ before loading through Kim tester an apparatus consisting of a loading column and a specimen and column holder Diameter (D) of column was 3cm and 4cm with each column having different radius (r) of round cut at the bottom. The static load was applied at 50mm/min in axial direction of the specimen, not in diametral direction. The maximum load ($P_{max}$) and vertical deformation (y) at $P_{max}$ point were obtained from the test. A strength value was calculated based on the $P_{max}$ r, D and y by using the equation $K_D = 4P_{max}/{\pi}(D-2(r-\sqrt{2ry-y^2}))^2$ and is defined as the deformation strength ($kgf/cm^2$). The values of $P_{max}$/y and $K_I=K_D/y$ were also calculated. In general the leading column diameter and radius of round cut were significant factors affecting $K_D$ and $P_{max}$ values while specimen diameter was not. The statistical analyses showed the $K_D$ had the best correlation with rut depth and dynamic stability. The next best correlation was found from $P_{max}$ which was followed by $P_{max}$/y and $K_I$ in order.

  • Introduction: The surgical treatment of Graves' disease has several advantage such as rapid and long lasting therapeutic effect, relatively low incidence of postoperative hypothyroidism and recurrence. Because of less frequent but serious postoperative complications, the operation have not been casually used for treatment of Graves' disease. Hypoclacemia, hoarseness and hematomas are common complications after operative treatment. However, the causative mechanisms of these complications have not been well explained. Objective: We aimed to analyze the risk factors affecting the occurance of complications in surgical treatment for Graves' disease and to evaluate what are the causative mechanisms of postoperative complications. Patients and Methods: From January 1985 to December 1998, a total of 668 surgically treated patients for Graves' disease were enrolled in this study. The incidence of postoperative complications were analyzed in relation to types of surgery, preoperaive preparation, specimen weight, bleeding amount and remnant weight. Results: Postoperative complication was developed in 108(16.2%) of 668 patients. The most common complication was transient hypocalcemia in 85 cases(12.7%). Other complications were: Hematoma in 9 cases(1.3%), transient hoarseness in 5 cases(0.7%), permanent hypocalcemia in 6 cases(0.9%), permanent hoarseness in 3 case(0.4%). The important etiologic factors affecting the occurance of complications were preoperative preparation, perioperative thyroid weight, and remnant thyroid weight. Since 1993, the incidence of complication was more decreased than that in before. Conclusion: To decrease the incidence of postoperative complications of Graves' disease, the patients should be selected carefully, sufficient preoperative preparation should be achieved, and the operation should be performed by well-experienced surgeons.

  • High-voltage electron microscope (HVEM) has higher resolution and penetration power than conventional transmission electron microscope that could be load thick specimen. Some researchers have taken this advantage of HVEM to explore 3-dimensional configuration of the biological structures including tissue and cells. Whole mount preparations has been employed to study some cell lines and primary culture cells. In this study, we would like to introduce useful whole mount preparation method for neuronal studies. The plastic coverslips were punched, covered by formvar membrane and coated with carbon. The neurons obtained embryonic 18 rat hippocampus were seeded on the prepared cover slip. The coverslips were fixed, dried in freeze drier and kept in a descicator until HVEM observation. We could observe detailed neuronal structures such as soma, dendrite and spine under HVEM without conventional thin section and heavy metal stain. The anaglyphic image based on stereo paired image ($-8^{\circ},+8^{\circ}$) provides three dimensional perception of the neuronal dendrites and their spines. This method could be applied to sophisticated analysis of dendritic spine under the various experimental conditions.

  • Several $Al_2O_3$-based polycrystalline which had different dopant ratio in the range of 0.5mol% were prepared by doping pure $Cr_2O_3$, $ZrO_2$, $HfO_3$ Single crystalline which had same composition with above polycrystalline were made by means of floating zone method. This study examined the role of each dopant for enhancing the mefchanical properties of $Al_2O_3$-based Ceramics. Optical micrographs $({\times}200)$ of $Al_2O_3-Cr_2O_3$ single crystal showing not only radial crack (rc) on the specimen surface but median crack (mc) and lateral crack (lc) under surface at the edge of indentation mark. Fracture toughness of $Al_2O_3$-based Ceramics was increased with $ZrO_2$ content. Alloying effect of $Cr_2O_3$ contributed to the hardness of $Al_2O_3$ based ceramics.

  • Electron microscopy has used for analysing the structure of protein over 30 years. Bacteriohodopsin and porins are used as examples to illustrate the progress that has recently been made in attaining resolutions which hitherto were regarded as exclusive to the realm of x-ray crystallography. To determine a protein structure used by electron microscopy, one must pass through a number of basic steps including preparation of specimen , data acquisition and data processing.

  • The stability and response time of $WO_3$ thin films for EC device are critical problems being solved. Those are affected by the species of electrolyte, preparation conditions and fabricating methods of specimen. In this paper, we compared the stabilities of three kinds of tungsten oxide film in electrolyte. Each of three films was prepared by different manufacturing conditions, that is, one is a thermal oxidation film of tungsten metal deposited on pure glass substrate, another is a $WO_3$ film made on ITO glass directly, the other is a thermally oxidized film on tungsten plate. It was observed that thermally oxidized $WO_3$ films has a remarkable stability (the lifetime was above $10^6$ cycle). From these results, we found that the stability was closely related to the stoichiometric bonding between tungsten and oxygen atoms in addition to crystallinity and density of film.
