  • To assess the port development and maritime traffic environment, the future traffic volume has been estimated using the number of inbound and outbound vessel for a specific port. The estimation of future traffic volume should be considered as an important factor to establish the degree of fairway congestion, the determination of fairway width and the operational role. Until now, the number of in and out vessel for the port has been only estimated mainly, but the type and size of inbound and outbound ships are different depending on the port's characteristics. So, it is difficult to estimate the future traffic volume using the change of only one item. This paper calculates the future traffic volume using the marine traffic characteristic factors as the number of coastal ship and ocean-going ship, the size of ship and the change of cargo volume per a ship etc. And it compared with the results of Artificial Neural Network(ANN) for accurate identification of nonlinear system.

  • This research was carried out to investigate the effects of cyclic humidification on the dimensional stability of particleboard manufactured according the three specific gravity levels and com-ply fabricated with a core of particleboard and veneer or plywood as the face and back materials. Both the particleboard and com-ply were subjected to four cycles of 50-90-50% relative humidity. The results are summarized as follows: Particleboard and com-ply followed a clear pattern of increasing dimensions and weight on the adsorption cycle and decreasing dimensions and weight on the humidification cycle. After the fourth cycle, the dimensions and weight of both particleboard and com-ply were greater than those originally measured. The greater part of increase in occurred during the first humidification cycle. The specific gravity of particleboard has a significant effect thickness and volume change. The dimensional stability of com-ply was better than that of particleboard. In addition, the dimensional stability of com-ply bonded with plywood was better than that of com-ply bonded with veneer.

  • Objectives Optimized voxel based morphometry (VBM) has been increasingly applied to investigate differences in the brain morphology between a group of patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and control subjects. Optimized VBM permits comparison of gray matter (GM) volume at voxel-level from the entire brain. The purpose of this study was to assess the regional GM volume change measured by optimized VBM in MCI subjects compared to controls. Methods Twenty patients with MCI and 20 control subjects with normal cognition were recruited for this study. We applied the optimized VBM protocol to the image data including study-specific template and the modulation of the data with the Jacobian determinants. GM volume differences between the MCI subjects and the control subjects and their correlations with the neuropsychological performances were investigated. Results Optimized VBM analysis revealed GM volume reduction in hippocampus, precentral gyrus, insula and parietal operculum in the MCI group compared to the control group (family wise error corrected p < 0.05). Korean version of the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's disease (CERAD-K) word list recall scores were significantly correlated with the GM volumes of hippocampus, precuneus and posterior cingulate in the MCI group (FWE corrected p < 0.05). Conclusions The results confirm previous findings of atrophic changes in medial temporal lobe and parietal lobe in the MCI group and suggest that these abnormalities may be related with cognitive decline and prognosis in patients with MCI.

  • We compiled and analyzed long-term time-series data collected in Korea to evaluate changes in oceanographic conditions and marine ecosystems near Jeju Island ($33^{\circ}00^{\prime}-34^{\circ}00^{\prime}\;N$, $125^{\circ}30^{\prime}-127^{\circ}30^{\prime}\;E$) from 1981 to 2010. Environmental data included depth-specific time series of temperature and salinity that have been measured bimonthly since 1961 in water columns at 175 fixed stations along 22 oceanographic lines in Korean waters by the National Fisheries Research & Development Institute, and time series of estimated volume transport of the Tsushima Warm Current (TWC) and Korea Strait Bottom Cold Water (KSBCW) for the period from 1961 to 2008. We analyzed the species composition in terms of biomass of fish species caught by Korean fishing vessels in the waters near Jeju Island (1981-2010). Data were summarized and related to environmental changes using canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). The CCA detected major shifts in fish community structure between 1982 and 1983 and between 1990 and 1992; the dominant species were a filefish during 1981-1992 and chub mackerel from 1992 to 2007. CCA suggested that water temperature and salinity in the mixed layer and the volume transport of the TWC and the KSBCW were significantly related to the long-term changes in the fish community in the waters off Jeju Island. Fish community shifts seemed to be related to the well-established 1989 regime shift in the North Pacific. Further studies are required to elucidate the mechanisms driving climate change effects on the thermal windows and habitat ranges of commercial species to develop fisheries management plans based on reliable projections of long-term changes in the oceanographic conditions in waters off Jeju Island.

  • It is important to consider the effects of land-use changes on surface runoff, stream flow, and groundwater recharge. Expansion of urban areas significantly impacts the environment in terms of ground water recharge, water pollution, and storm water drainage. Increase of impervious area due to urbanization leads to an increase in surface runoff volume, contributes to downstream flooding and a net loss in groundwater recharge. Assessment of the hydrologic impacts or urban land-use change traditionally includes models that evaluate how land use change alters peak runoff rates, and these results are then used in the design of drainage systems. Such methods however do not address the long-term hydrologic impacts of urban land use change and often do not consider how pollutants that wash off from different land uses affect water quality. L-THIA (Long-Term Hydrologic Impact Assessment) is an analysis tool that provides site-specific estimates of changes in runoff, recharge and non point source pollution resulting from past or proposed land-use changes. It gives long-term average annual runoff for a land use configuration, based on climate data for that area. In this study, the environmental and hydrological impact from the urbanized basin had been examined with GIS L-THIA in Korea.

  • In this study, soil samples from the Antarctic and Vladivostok, Siberia were tested in the laboratory, and specific gravity, compaction curve and grain size distribution were determined. The effect of temperature change on the thermal conductivity, unfrozen water content and compressive strength were investigated. Samples for the compressive strength test were prepared in a mold with a fixed volume to prevent swelling and the effect of temperature and water content change on the strength were compared. Results from the thermal conductivity test showed that thermal conductivity values for both soils were larger at temperatures below freezing than above freezing. The unfrozen water content dropped sharply within a temperature range of $0{\sim}-5^{\circ}C$ and then gradually decreased further up to $-20^{\circ}C$. Compressive strength test results showed various stress/deformation curves with a change in water content. Sandy soil had much larger strength than pure ice at an identical temperature, while clayey soil had a smaller strength than ice near the freezing point, but showed a larger strength at temperatures belows $-15^{\circ}C$.

  • In this study, a case analysis for thermal design of electronic equipment using a phase change material(PCM) was performed numerically using ANSYS Fluent. Experiments were conducted to find the temperature increase(${\Delta}T_m$), melting temperature($T_m$), and volume expansion of the PCM under the melting process. To verify the accuracy of the Fluent solver model, $T_m$, ${\Delta}T_m$, and the melting time were compared with experimental results. To simulate the temperature stagnation phenomenon under the melting process, the equivalent specific heat method was applied to calculate the thermal properties of the PCM in the solver model. To determine the thermal stability of electronic equipment, we paid special attention to finding a thermal design for the PCM using fins. Further, an additional numerical analysis is currently underway to find an optimum design.

  • In this paper, we propose a robustness sensitivity index (RSI) of highway networks to analyze the effect of congestion in a specific section on the entire highway. The newly proposed RSI is defined as the change in the total mileage of the transportation network per extended unit length when the length of a particular section is extended. When the RSI value is large, traffic congestion in the section has a worse effect on the entire network than in other sections. The existing network robustness index (NRI) simply observes changes in transportation networks with and without specific sections, but the RSI proposed in this study is a kind of performance indicator that allows quantitative analysis of the ripple effect of the entire network according to the degree of congestion in a specific section. While changing the degree of congestion in a particular section, it is possible to calculate how the traffic volume increases, decreases, and the size and location of the congestion section change. This analysis proves the superiority of RSI as it cannot be analyzed with NRI. Various properties of RSI are analyzed using data from the domestic highway network. In addition, using the RSI concept, it is shown that the ripple effect on other sections in which a change in the degree of congestion of a specific section occurs can be analyzed.

  • A thermo-fluid dynamic analysis was performed through the numerical simulation of a missile canister. Calculation was made in a fixed analytical volume and fully evaporated water was used as a coolant. To analyze the interaction among the hot gas, coolant, and mixture flow, Realizable $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence and VOF(Volume Of Fluid) model were chosen and parametric study was performed with the change of coolant flow rate. It could be found that the pressure on the canister top nonlinearly increased with the increase of coolant flow rate. Temperature and coolant distribution were closely related to the flow behavior in canister. Temperature on the canister bottom indicated a decrease being proportional to coolant flow rate in early times but after a specific time, the temperature increased with the tendency being reversed. In addition, the early part of temperature showed a fluctuating phenomenon because of the overall circulatory flow of mixture gas.

  • In this paper, a study of Urea-SCR System for Dosing Injector for responding to enhanced environmental regulations has been conducted. There is a limit to the experimental approach due to the structural characteristics of the injector. In order to overcome this problem, The analysis was performed assuming unsteady turbulent flow through computational fluid analysis and the internal flow characteristics of the injector were analyzed. By changing the nozzle shape of the injector, the performance factors of the swirl injector by shape were selected and compared. The design parameters were modified by changing the diameter of the nozzle at a constant ratio compared to the base model. Swirl coefficient, outlet mass flow, and sac volume were selected as performance parameters of the injector. The Conv. model to which the taper was applied showed the dominance in mass flow rate, discharge coefficient and swirl because of the smooth fluid flow by shape. Swirl coefficient, outlet mass flow, and sac volume were selected as performance parameters of the injector. As a result of the comparison coefficient derivation with those performance parameters for comparing the performance of the model-specific injector, the Conv-140 model with the nozzle diameter expanded by 140% showed the best value of the comparison coefficient.
