Since the new millennium, truss PCMs(Periodic Cellular Metals) have drawn attention because of their superior specific stiffness, strength and multi-functionality. Prior studies have focused on the structural design and optimization. Kagome truss PCM has been proved to have the higher resistance to plastic buckling, more plastic deformation energy and lower anisotropy than other truss PCMs. In this study, we introduce a new idea to fabricate multi-layered Kagome truss PCM from continuous wires which can gain high strength as in piano wires and can be controlled to be defect free owing to drawing process. The relative density, the stiffness and the strength under bending and compressive load are estimated through elementary mechanics and compared with the results from experiments and FEA. The failure mechanisms are analyzed, and also mechanical performance and production are discussed.

Throughout this thesis, I describe the design, fabrication, and evaluation of the 3 DOF farce-reflecting haptic interface using USMs(ultrasonic motors). This haptic interface allows a htmlaIl "observer" to explore and interact with a virtual environrrent for the sense of touch. To effectively display the mechanical impedance of the htmlaIl hand we need a haptic device with specific characteristics, such as low inertia, alrmst zero friction and very high stiffness. USMs have attracted considerable attention as the actuator satisfied these conditions. An observer may grasp the end effector of revice and interact with surfaces and objects created within a virtual environment The revice provires force feedback, allowing users to "feel" objects within the environment. The device works very well, as users are able to detect the edge of the wall, the stiffness of the button and the puncture. TIle force-reflecting haptic interface could be suitable as a master for micro-surgery or as an interface to virtual reality training systems.

In this study, grindability of some representative engineering ceramics are experimentally investigated using resin bond diamond wheel with conventional surface grinding machine, and proper grinding conditions which can be obtained from various experimental results are established also for mechanical components which are proper to domestic circumstances with high reliability. And through the results of experiment, it is confirmed that grinding energies of the ceramics, especially in the case of $Al_2O_3$, are lower than steel with same machining condition in the conventional grinding because of their fine-brittle fracture mode type removal process, though the ceramics are well-known to unmachinable materials. And moreover, the total pass numbers needed for spark-out process to be completed are depend on their mechanical properties because that grinding stiffness is different from each other. The grinding force, ginding power and ground surface roughness are also measured and compared. Furthermore, the experiments carried out in this study, some useful results are obtained with can guide to grind engineering ceramics with conventional surface grinding machine.

An analytical procedure to determine a proper profile of the spring rail that generates intended contact pressure distribution in the flat wiper blade is introduced. The flat wiper blade is one piece blade and subjected to pressing force at a center point. In this type of blade, contact pressure distribution in the tip of rubber strip is determined by the pressing force, the initial profile of the blade before contact and bending stiffness of the blade. Experimentally obtained bending stiffness of the blade assembly is almost identical to that of the spring rail. Principle of reciprocity has been used to define the initial profile of spring rail from the deformed profile that is assumed to be identical to the windshield glass profile. The procedure has been verified experimentally by measuring the contact pressure of the blade assembled with the spring rail designed by the procedure proposed here. Measured contact pressure distributions of the blades show good agreements with intended distributions over the entire blade span. Consequently, it can be concluded that proposed procedure has relatively good accuracy in developing the spring rail for flat blade having a specific contact pressure distribution.
Laminated composite plates are utilized extensively in different fields of construction and industry thanks to their advantages such as high stiffness-to-weight ratio. Additionally, they are characterized by their directional properties that permit the designer to optimize their stiffness for specific applications. This paper presents a numerical analysis and optimization study of plates made of composite subjected to low velocity impact. The main aim is to identify the optimum fiber orientations of the composite plates that resist low velocity impact load. First, a three-dimensional finite element model is built using LS DYNA computer software package to perform the impact analyses. The composite plate has been modeled using solid elements. The failure criteria of Tsai-Wu's criterion have been used to control the strength of the composite material. A good agreement has been found between the predicted numerical results and experimental results in the literature which validate the finite element model. Then, an Adaptive Simulated Annealing (ASA) has been used to optimize the response of impacted composite laminate where its objective is to maximize the safety factor by varying the ply angles. The results show that the ASA is robust in the sense that it is capable of predicting the best optimal designs.

This paper alined at the development of a lateral drift control method that is able to quantitatively control the lateral drift of global node. For this, we applied an efficient partial reanalysis algorithm. By using this algorithm, we could recalculate the displacement and member force of the specific node without reanalyzing the entire structure when member stiffness changes partially. The theoretical concepts of the algorithm are so simple that it is not necessary to solve the complicate differential equation or to repeat the analysis of entire structure. The proposed method calculates the drift contribution of each member for the global displacement according to the variation of section sizes by using the algorithm. Then by changing the member sizes as the order of drift contribution, we could control the lateral drift of global node with a minimum quantity of materials. 20 story braced frame structure system is presented to illustrate the usefulness of proposed method. It is shown that the proposed method is very effective in lateral drift control and the results obtained by proposed method are consistent with those of commercial analysis program.
Microtunnelling is a technique applied to install a small-size tunnel in a soft cohesionless ground. In microtunnelling, a series of concrete tubular segments are pushed from a starting pit to power-line tunnel under a runway of JFK international airport at New York. During the microtunneling process, bentonite is jetted with very hyh pressure through a nozzle to advance disturbance in the subgrade caused by the pressurized bentonite in the aspects of subgrade stiffness. SASW measurements were performed on the runway above the center line of the shear wave velocity profiles. Besides the change of subgrade stiffness, the change of subgrade strength was also evaluated by the site-specific relationships between shear wave velocity and N value, which was determined by N values. The estimated N values gave a clue to the understanding of the change of subgrade strength.

Since two oil shocks in 1970s, all of engine makers have persevered in their efforts to reduce specific fuel consumption and to increase engine power rate as much as possible in marine diesel engines. As a result, the maximum pressure in cylinders of these engines has been continuously increased. It causes direct axial vibration. The axial stiffness of crank shaft is low compared to old types of engine models by increasing the stroke/bore ratio and its major critical speed might occur within engine operation range. An axial damper, therefore, needs to be installed in order to reduce the axial vibration amplitude of the crankshaft. Usually the main critical speed of axial vibration for the propulsion shafting system with a 4-8 cylinder engine exists near the maximum continuous revolution(MCR). In this case, when the damping coefficient of the damper is increased within the allowance of the structural strength, its stiffness coefficient is also increased. Therefore, the main critical speed of axial vibration can be moved beyond the MCR. It has the same function as a conventional detuner. However, in the case of a 9-12 cylinder engine, the main critical speed of axial vibration for the propulsion shafting system exists below the MCR and thus the critical speed cannot be moved beyond the MCR by using an axial damper. In this case, the damping coefficient of an axial damper should be adjusted by considering the range of engine revolution, the location and vibration amplitude of the critical speed, the fore and aft vibration of the hull super structure. It needs to clarify the dynamic characteristics of the axial vibration damper to control the axial vibration appropriately. Therefore authors suggest the calculation method to analyse the dynamic characteristics of axial vibration damper. To confirm the calculation method proposed in this paper, it is applied to the propulsion shafting system of the actual ships and satisfactory results are obtained.

Recently, the synthetic material stern tube bush has been applied by ship owner's requirement because the synthetic material has a merit. That is to say, when stern tube seal is damaged and sea water comes into stern tube, it can work without problem because of water lubricating property. However, the material also has a demerit of temperature rise problem when some factors meets on synthetic material, for example, not sufficient lubrication oil supply and not proper shaft alignment and so on. As known in the world, the RAILKO bush is rampant for synthetic material by some ship owner because of the above mentioned reason. However, the bush has several accidents on large container vessel. Unfortunately or fortunately our yard has a chance to apply the RAILKO bush owing to requirement of specific ship owner. Therefore, it is much more required to approach the accurate shaft alignment analysis. In line with this reason, we had a shaft alignment calculation considering hull deformation and hull flexibility (hull stiffness). Also, in the calculation, we had considered dynamic condition which is reflected he propeller thrust forces and moments and oil film stiffness on the shaft alignment calculation. According to he shaft alignment calculation, bearing slope was applied on the tern tube bush and was measured. The RAILKO bush should be applied the running in procedure according to maker's recommendation for performing the oil film on the bush surface. Finally, the vessels were delivered successfully without any problem with AILKO bush as shown on his paper.
The paper presents the study on a change in modal parameters and structural stiffness of cable-stayed Fiberline Bridge made entirely of Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) composite used for 20 years in the fjord area of Kolding, Denmark. Due to this specific location the bridge structure was subjected to natural aging in harsh environmental conditions. The flexural properties of the pultruded GFRP profiles acquired from the analyzed footbridge in 1997 and 2012 were determined through three-point bending tests. It was found that the Young's modulus increased by approximately 9%. Moreover, the influence of the temperature on the storage and loss modulus of GFRP material acquired from the Fiberline Bridge was studied by the dynamic mechanical analysis. The good thermal stability in potential real temperatures was found. The natural vibration frequencies and mode shapes of the bridge for its original state were evaluated through the application of the Finite Element (FE) method. The initial FE model was created using the real geometrical and material data obtained from both the design data and flexural test results performed in 1997 for the intact composite GFRP material. Full scale experimental investigations of the free-decay response under human jumping for the experimental state were carried out applying accelerometers. Seven natural frequencies, corresponding mode shapes and damping ratios were identified. The numerical and experimental results were compared. Based on the difference in the fundamental natural frequency it was again confirmed that the structural stiffness of the bridge increased by about 9% after 20 years of service life. Data collected from this study were used to validate the assumed FE model. It can be concluded that the updated FE model accurately reproduces the dynamic behavior of the bridge and can be used as a proper baseline model for the long-term monitoring to evaluate the overall structural response under service loads. The obtained results provided a relevant data for the structural health monitoring of all-GFRP bridge.
