  • The control of food intake is a complex phenomenon caused by interactions between central and peripheral control mechanisms. The hypothalamic and brain stem regions have been identified as centers for food intake and energy expenditure in animals and humans. Of these, the ventromedial and lateral hypothalamic areas are involved in the control of food intake. Also, large amounts of neurotransmitters known to be involved in feeding are present in the hippocampus. Paricularly, tryptophan hydroxylase(TPH), known as a factor in the control of food intake, is present in high levels in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus and the hippocampus. In this study, TPH expression levels in the hypothalamic and hippocampal regions of fasting, anorexia mutant, and control mice were compared using RT-PCR and immunohistochemical methods. Differences in body weight among the fasting, anorexia mutant, and control groups wire observed. No statistical significance was noted in the number of TPH-immunoactivity in the hypothalamic nuclei, but relatively higher populations of such fibers were observed in the fasting group : the control group yielded samples with an overall value of 170.3${\pm}$3.5 in terms of immunoreactivity-induced optical density, whereas the fasting group yielded a value of 168.3${\pm}$2.6, and the anorexia mutant group 171.3${\pm}$0.8(lower values represent higher immunoreactivity), In fasting mice, stained neuronal bodies were observed in the CA3 and dentate gyrus regions of the hippocampus, which was different from the hippocampal regions of the control and anorexia mutant mice. The RT-PCR procedures were performed using whole brains, precluding any statistically noticeable findings in relation to specific regions, although the fasting and anorexia mutant groups showed 123.3% and 102.9%, respectively, of the TPH mRNA level in the control. The overall results present evidences of the role of TPH in the decrease in food intake during fasting caused by exogenic factors and in genetically acquired anorexia. • This paper describes a detailed investigational performance on the gamma radiation shield effect of heavy concretes that were manufactured by the use of mineral ores produced domestically and which may be possibly applied for the biological shield design. Ten different kinds of mineral ores were collected for use as the aggregates, physical test and chemical analysis for them were carried out to select the aggregate with a better property. Through the experimental investigation on the shielding effect of various concretes with different combination of concrete components such as water-cement and fine-coarse aggregate ratios, it was possible to derive some criteria for the best condition being capable of obtaining the concretes with high density and good uniformity. Data on the shielding-effectiveness of the different concretes were obtained by performing collimated beam experiment using 60Co gamma-ray. Analyzing the shielding-efficiency, shielding-concrete specific gravity and biological shield cost, the optimum condition of yielding the best economic shielding design, with low cost and good spatial distribution to some extent was determined.

  • Lithium-ion batteries are commonly employed in hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), and achieving high energy density in the battery has been one of the most critical issues in the automotive industry. Because liquid cooling containing antifreeze is important in automotive batteries to enable cold starts, an effective geometric configuration for high-cooling performance should be carefully investigated. Battery cooling with antifreeze has also been considered to realize successful cold starts. In this article, we theoretically investigate a specific property of an antifreeze cooling battery system, and we perform numerical modeling to satisfy the required thermal specifications. Because a typical battery system in HEVs consists of multiple stacked battery cells, the cooling performance is determined mainly by the special properties of antifreeze in the coolant passage, which dissipates heat generated from the battery cells. We propose that the required cooling performance can be realized by performing numerical simulations of different geometric configurations for battery cooling. Furthermore, we perform a theoretical analysis as a design guideline to optimize the cooling performance with minimum power consumption by the cooling pump.

  • The abundant nutrients contained in deep seawater are delivered by natural upwellings from the deep sea to the surface sea. However, the natural upwelling phenomenon is limited to specific areas of the sea; in other areas, the thermocline separates the surface sea from the lower layer. Thus, the surface layer is often deficient in nutritive salts, causing the deterioration of its primary productivity and ultimately leading to an imbalance in the marine ecosystem. Without a consistent supply of nitrogenous nutritive salts, they are absorbed by phytoplankton, resulting in a considerable problem in primary productivity. To solve this issue, a floating type of artificial upwelling system is suggested to artificially pump up, distribute, and diffuse deep seawater containing rich nutritive salts. The key technologies for developing such a floating artificial upwelling system are a floating offshore structure with a large diameter riser, self-supplying energy system, density current generating system, method for estimating the emission and absorption of CO2, and way to evaluate the primary production variation. Strengthening the primary production of the sea by supplying deep seawater to the sea surface will result in a sea environment with abundant fishery resources.

  • The induction of a phenotype with preoperties may have clinical significance in the acceleration of the wound-healing process. Wound contraction involves a specialized cell known as the myofibroblast. The myofibroblasts can be identified by their intense staining of actin bundles with anti-actin antibody. Tissue-specific actin distribution is correlated with the contractile activity of the myofibroblasts and smooth muscle etc. This study was performed to determine the expression of actin filaments in the cytoplasm of cultured human gingival fibroblsts after GaAs laser(BIOSAER, Korea) irradiation. Human gingival fibroblasts were cultured from explants of normal interdental gingival tissue. The third-generation fibroblasts were used for immunohistochemical study. The cultured fibroblasts were exposed $0.53joule/cm^2$(lmW, 7 mimutes) of energy density, and then observed by immunohistochemical method using, rabbit anti0gelsolin, hen smooth muscle polyclonal antibody(Chemicon international inc.), and biotinylated goat anti-rabbit IgG(Vectastain) 24-, 36-, 48-hour after laser irradiation Following results were obtained ; 1. In nonirradiated cultures, round shaped active fibroblasts with abundant cytoplasm and prominet nucleoli were observed. 2. In 24- and 36-hour cultures after laser irradiation, spindle shaped cells with long process were observed. The intensity of stain was seen in cytoplasm of these modified fibroblasts. 3. In 48-hoour cultures after laser irradiation, stained spindle shape cell were not observed. The results suggest that the effect of the galium-arsenide laser treatment on cultured gingival fibroblasts is the rapid development of cytoplasmic actin filaments.

  • Peroxynitrite ($ONOO^-$) is a reactive oxidant formed from superoxide anion radical (${\cdot}\;O_2-$) and nitric oxide (NO), which can oxidize cellular components such as essential protein, non-protein thiols, DNA, low-density lipoproteins and membrane phospholipids. ${\cdot}\;O_2-$ and $ONOO^-$ have contributed to the pathogenesis of diseases such as stroke, heart disease, Alzheimer's disease and atherosclerosis. Because of damaging effects of ${\cdot}\;O_2-$ and $ONOO^-$ oxidants, Vespae Nidus, which has been known to strengthen the kidneys to preserve the vital energy. was tested as a potential specific scavenger of those oxidants. In this study, the viability of Vespae Nidus (1, 10, 50 g/ml) to scavenge ${\cdot}\;O_2-$, NO, $ONOO^-$ and so to protect cells against tert-butylhydroxyperoxide (t-BHP) induced cell death was tested. The levels of ${\cdot}\;O_2-$ and $ONOO^-$ were detected by staining with DCFH-DA and DHR 123, respectively. Protein expression levels of COX-2, iNOS and $NF{-\kappa}B$ were assayed by western blot. Vespae Nidus blocked t-BHP-induced cell death in a dose-dependent fashion. Vespae Nidus inhibited t-BHP-induced production of ${\cdot}\;O_2-$, NO and $ONOO^-$ in YPEN cells. The lipid peroxide level was increased and glutathione level was decreased in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated ICR mouse, whereas the ones in the Vespae Nidus-administered group were regulated beneficially. Vespae Nidus inhibited the expression of COX-2, iNOS and NF-κB (p65 and p50) genes in LPS-treated ICR mouse. The present study suggests that Vespae Nidus is a powerful antioxidant and promotes cellular defense activity by scavenging the toxic oxidants such as ${\cdot}\;O_2-$ and $ONOO^-$.

  • Objective: Chinese indigenous sheep breeds can be classified into the following three categories by their tail morphology: fat-tailed, fat-rumped and thin-tailed sheep. The typical sheep breeds corresponding to fat-tailed, fat-rumped, and thin-tailed sheep are large-tailed Han, Altay, and Tibetan sheep, respectively. Detection of copy number variation (CNV) and selection signatures provides information on the genetic mechanisms underlying the phenotypic differences of the different sheep types. Methods: In this study, PennCNV software and F-statistics (FST) were implemented to detect CNV and selection signatures, respectively, on the X chromosome in three Chinese indigenous sheep breeds using ovine high-density 600K single nucleotide polymorphism arrays. Results: In large-tailed Han, Altay, and Tibetan sheep, respectively, a total of six, four and 22 CNV regions (CNVRs) with lengths of 1.23, 0.93, and 7.02 Mb were identified on the X chromosome. In addition, 49, 34, and 55 candidate selection regions with respective lengths of 27.49, 16.47, and 25.42 Mb were identified in large-tailed Han, Altay, and Tibetan sheep, respectively. The bioinformatics analysis results indicated several genes in these regions were associated with fat, including dehydrogenase/reductase X-linked, calcium voltage-gated channel subunit alpha1 F, and patatin like phospholipase domain containing 4. In addition, three other genes were identified from this analysis: the family with sequence similarity 58 member A gene was associated with energy metabolism, the serine/arginine-rich protein specific kinase 3 gene was associated with skeletal muscle development, and the interleukin 2 receptor subunit gamma gene was associated with the immune system. Conclusion: The results of this study indicated CNVRs and selection regions on the X chromosome of Chinese indigenous sheep contained several genes associated with various heritable traits.

  • Corrosion damage of boiler, factory equipment and so forth occur quickly due to using of the polluted water, resulting in increasing leak accident. Especially, working life of hot water boiler using the polluted water becomes more short, and energy loss increases. The cathodic protection method is the most economical and reliable one to prevent corrosion damage of steel structures. Mg-base alloys galvanic anode protection of cathodic protection methode is suitable for the application of hot water boiler using water with high specific resistance such as tap water. This paper is studied on the cathodic protection characteristics of hot water boiler. In tap water solution, the measurement of cathodic protection potential according to the time elapsed is carried out, and behavior of cathodic polarization with current change is investigated. The main results obtained are as follows. In hot water boiler shell, the open circuit potential of base metal become less noble than that of weld Bone, and the current density of base metal becomes low than that of weld zone. The further distance from Mg-alloy galvanic anode, the higher cathodic protection potential of hot water boiler appears. And protective potential becomes high according to pass cathodic protection time and after 6∼10 days become stable.

  • This study investigated the health and nutritional characteristics according to household income level and obesity in Koreans aged over 50 years based on the 2005 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Subjects were classified into 3 groups by average household income with reference to the minimum monthly living expenses (MLE): low (n = 319, < 100% MLE), middle (n = 222, < 200% MLE), high (n = 411, ${\geq}$ 200% MLE) and each group was compared by BMI index. With increasing income level, the prevalence of systolic hypertension and hyperlipidemia was increased. In the low income group, serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, and fasting glucose were higher in the obese compared with the normal. In the middle and high income groups, the prevalence of hyperlipidemia and diastolic hypertension were higher in the obese. Subjects had nutritional imbalance, such as inadequate intake of calcium and potassium. With increasing income level, the percentages of protein and fat to total calorie were increased in addition to the intakes and density of nutrients. The obese in the low income group had higher intakes of energy, protein, phosphorus and higher consumption frequency of cereals and potatoes compared with the normal. It was shown that the obese of the middle and high income groups tended to have lower consumption frequency of Korean cabbage and higher frequency of fruits. The obese of high income group also had binge drinking habit. Therefore, this study suggests that specific approaches based on economic status should be considered in developing nutrition education program for the elderly.

  • A simple and low cost autogenous-type extruder with a capacity of about 400kg/hr for rice bran-oil stabilization was developed. Specific energy consumption of the extruder was 0.060-0.070 KWH/kg of rice bran during extrusion. Rice bran was easily extruded to form flakes or pellets with an increase of bulk density. And also the desired extrusion temperature of $95^{\circ}C{\;}to{\;}150^{\circ}C$ could be easily obtained without any water addition when the rice bran was properly parametered with feed rate. The moisture content of bran was reduced and peroxidase was significantly inactivated after extrusion. The rice bran stabilized by the extrusion process was excellent in storage stability without considerable increase in free fatty acids.
