  • The present study confirmed the intelligibility improvement benefit of clear speech by investigating the intelligibility of Korean stops produced in different speaking styles: conversational, citation-form, and clear speech. This finding supports the Hypo- & Hyper-speech theory that speakers adjust vocal effort to accommodate hearers' speech perception difficulty. A progressive intelligibility improvement was found for the three speaking styles investigated: clear speech was more intelligible than citation-form speech citation-form speech was more intelligible than conversational speech and clear speech was also more intelligible than conversational speech. These findings suggest that the manipulations to elicit three distinct speaking styles in a laboratory setting were successful. Korean lenis stops showed the least intelligibility improvement among the three Korean stop types, and this result suggests that lenis stops should be more resistant to intelligibility enhancement efforts in clear speech than aspirated and fortis stops.

  • Background: Breast and cervical cancers are significant causes of mortality and morbidity for Asian women, and poor English-speaking ability is a barrier to cancer prevention practices. Materials and Methods: This project tested relationships among English-speaking ability and early detection practices regarding to breast and cervical cancer among female Chinese immigrants. A descriptive cross-sectional survey was used. Results: 175 female Chinese immigrants completed the survey in the breast cancer prevention section, and 35 of them also completed the cervical cancer prevention section. Some 63% of them had heard about the clinical breast exam (CBE), but only 54% had had a CBE. While 46% of the participants were aware of their need for a Pap smear, only 31% had heard about it and had undergone a pelvic exam. Conclusions: English-speaking ability was strongly associated with immigrant women's knowledge of female cancer early detection. Culturally and linguistic issues should be considered as the first step to access immigrant population in designing future education intervention.

  • In this paper, we propose an automatic fluency evaluation algorithm for English speaking tests. In the proposed algorithm, acoustic features are extracted from an input spoken utterance and then fluency score is computed by using support vector regression (SVR). We estimate the parameters of feature modeling and SVR using the speech signals and the corresponding scores by human raters. From the correlation analysis results, it is shown that speech rate, articulation rate, and mean length of runs are best for fluency evaluation. Experimental results show that the correlation between the human score and the SVR score is 0.87 for 3 speaking tests, which suggests the possibility of the proposed algorithm as a secondary fluency evaluation tool.

  • This paper aims to examine directives and its adjacency pair directives-responses in the Chinese textbook Hanyu Kouyu from the speech act theory, and give some suggestions for Chinese speaking instruction. For analysis of directives, it is important to consider context surrounding it at first. Context includes space for speaking, person who speak with, adjacent speech act, etc., so this paper considers context firstly before explaining directives and discusses how each element of context effects interpretation of its meaning. From the politeness perspective, directives and rejection as one of the responses are easy to be FTAs(face-threatening acts) fundamentally, so they are required to have some strategies for minimizing the threat, and it is found that there are strategies for positive face and negative face in the textbook. In the textbook, it is also examined that directives-responses contribute for interlocutor to accomplish social acts, for example, negotiating, insisting, maintaining, making alternative ideas, etc.

  • The purpose of this paper is to suggest a discourse analysis activity that can be used in the stage after performing tasks in task-based Korean speaking class and show its pedagogical advantages. A discourse analysis activity is an metadiscourse activity in which learners speak what they have spoken. By analyzing discourse and performing tasks again, learners can enhance their fluency and accuracy, make their knowledges in target language more stable and extend them, and develop problem solving skills. Consequently, this facilitates learners' acquisition of Korean language. This paper reviewed theoretical background of proposing discourse analysis activity, suggested the pedagogical advantages of the analysis, and examined discourse analysis activity in Korean speaking class. And it included the discourse sample of learners in actual class.

  • This study was intended to examine the pattern and level of experience of voice problems and risk factors in school teacher, to offer basic data to prevent voice problems. The subjects were 180 school teachers from primary, middle, and high school teachers in C City, Chonbuk. Data were collected by questionnaires survey from April 30, 2001 to May 10, 2001. 56.6% of the subjects experienced voice problems such as "H-notes difficult"($2.68{\pm}.86$), followed by "Tired voice"($2.32{\pm}.93$), "Effortful voice"($2.27{\pm}.90$), and "Drying of throat"($2.21{\pm}.91$). According to general characteristics, smoking subjects showed higher voice problem than no smoking subjects and this difference was statistically significant(t=2.76, p=.007). According to voice related characteristics, "Speaking loudly" subjects showed higher voice problem than those no "Speaking loudly"(t=-2.02, p=.045). "Speaking effortful" subjects measured higher voice problem than those of "Speaking effortful" and this difference was statistically significant(t=-3.34, p=.001). The inspection of the relation of cause affecting school teachers showed that it had an interacting effect of voice habit, smoking, experienced voice problem, treatment(due to voice problem) experience, by staged it accounted for 55.3% of the total voice problem. The total voice problem indicated a positive correlation(p=.000). Conclusion: over half of the school teachers have experienced voice problems, higher perceived related of voice symptom and physical symptom factors. Also, because there are significant differences in voice problem according to smoking, voice habits of "Speaking loudly", "Speaking effortful", experienced voice problem, treatment(due to voice problem) experience.

  • This study was performed to offer convenience to determine the vertical dimension of occlusion of edentulous patients by investigating the interocclusal distances at physiologic rest position, at speaking of /m/ sound, and some korean short sounds, that is, /mem/ and /beb/ sounds, which were found in our previous study with dentulous subjects. Ten edentulous subjects - 6 men and 4 women - were selected for this study. The frequencies at speaking of /m/, /mem/, and /beb/ sounds were analyzed with Computerized speech lab($CSL^{TM}$, Model 4300B, Software version 5.X, Kay Elemetrics Co. U.S.A.). And the interocclusal distances at physiologic rest position and at speaking of /m/, /mem/, and /beb/ sounds were measured with K6 diagnostic system(Myo-tronics, Inc. U.S.A.). The results of this study were as follows ; 1. In the acoustic analysis by Computerized speech lab, frequencies of sounds of edentulous subjects with complete denture at speaking of /m/, /mem/, and /beb/ were similar to those of dentulous subjects. 2. In the linear correlation by Pearson's correlation coefficient, the interocclusal distance at physiologic rest position was most similar to those of speaking /mem/ sound, secondly /m/ sound, and thirdly /beb/ sound(p<0.05). In reliability by Cronbach's alpha, the results were reliable with alpha value 0.97. 3. It was found by Levene's test for equality of variance that the difference between men and women in the interocclusal distances at physiologic rest position and at speaking of /m/, /mem/, and /beb/ sounds was not statistically significant(p>0.05).
