  • In this paper, we propose a new temporal error concealment method for video packet loss. Error concealment for each loss block is performed by temporal motion compensation and a spatial smoothing operation of boundary pixels between the compensated block and its surrounding blocks. In the simulation results, performance improvement for the proposed technique is on the average 2㏈ in comparison with conventional techniques.

  • This paper presents an efficient technique for interference suppression in IEEE 802.11b WLAN systems. A linearly constrained adaptive array processor which may improve reception performance of WLAN device by reducing co-channel interference signal and multipath effects effectively was proposed. A spatial smoothing method is used to prevent cancellation of a desired signal in a coherent environment and also integral nulling method is employed to improve the array performance in indoor environment. It was shown that the integral nulling approach performed best while the spatial smoothing method performed better than linearly constrained array processing. The performance of the WLAN system may be improved by the proposed methods which reduce co-channel, coherent, and WPAN interferences effectively.

  • In the indoor location estimation system, which has recently been actively studied, the received signal strength indicator contains a high level of noise when measuring the signal strength in the range between two nodes consisting of a receiver and a transceiver. To minimize the noise level, this paper proposes an improved adaptive smoothing filter that provides different exponential weights to the current value and previous averaged one of the data that were obtained from the nodes, because the characteristic signal attenuation of the received signal strength indicator generally has a log distribution. The proposed method can effectively decrease the noise level by using a feedback filter that can provide different weights according to the noise level of the obtained data and thus increase the accuracy in the distance and location without an additional filter such as the link quality indicator, which can verify the communication quality state to decrease the range errors in the indoor location recognition using ZigBee based on IEEE 802.15.4. For verifying the performance of the proposed improved adaptive smoothing filter, actual experiments are conducted in three indoor locations of different spatial sections. From the experimental results, it is verified that the proposed technique is superior to other techniques in range measurement.

  • Foreground/background segmentation in video sequences is often one of the first tasks in machine vision applications, making it a critical part of the system. In this paper, we present an improved sample-based technique that provides robust background image as well as segmentation mask. The conventional multiple interval sampling (MIS) algorithm have suffer from the unbalance of computation time per frame and the rapid change of confidence factor of background pixel. To balance the computation amount, a random-based pixel update scheme is proposed and a spatial and temporal smoothing technique is adopted to increase reliability of the confidence factor. The proposed method allows the sampling queue to have more dispersed data in time and space, and provides more continuous and reliable confidence factor. Experimental results revealed that our method works well to estimate stable background image and the foreground mask.

  • Many satellite image fusion techniques have been developed in order to produce a high resolution multispectral (MS) image by combining a high resolution panchromatic (PAN) image and a low resolution MS image. Heretofore, most high resolution image fusion techniques have used IKONOS and QuickBird images. Recently, GeoEye-1, offering the highest resolution of any commercial imaging system, was launched. In this study, we have experimented with GeoEye-1 images in order to evaluate which fusion algorithms are suitable for these images. This paper presents compares and evaluates the efficiency of five image fusion techniques, the $\grave{a}$ trous algorithm based additive wavelet transformation (AWT) fusion techniques, the Principal Component analysis (PCA) fusion technique, Gram-Schmidt (GS) spectral sharpening, Pansharp, and the Smoothing Filter based Intensity Modulation (SFIM) fusion technique, for the fusion of a GeoEye-1 image. The results of the experiment show that the AWT fusion techniques maintain more spatial detail of the PAN image and spectral information of the MS image than other image fusion techniques. Also, the Pansharp technique maintains information of the original PAN and MS images as well as the AWT fusion technique.

  • Methane/Air premixed flames are studied numerically, using a detailed chemical model, to investigate the flame strech effects on the extinction in a counterflow. The finite difference method, time integration and modified Newton iteration are used, and adaptive grid technique and grid smoothing have been employed to adjust the grid system according to the spatial steepness of the solution profiles. Results show that the flame stretch, or the conventional nondimensionalized stretch having the tangential flow characteristics of the stretched flame alone cannot adequately describes the extinction phenomena. On the other hand, the local flame stretch having both the normal and tangential flow characteristics of the stretched flame can give a proper explanation to the extinction of the symmetric planar premixed flames stabilized in a counter flow. The extinction condition were found to be a constant local stretch regardless of the equivalence ratio.

  • We propose a deep learning analysis technique with a convolutional neural network (CNN) to predict the evolutionary track of the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) from the 21-cm differential brightness temperature tomography images. We use 21cmFAST, a fast semi-numerical cosmological 21-cm signal simulator, to produce mock 21-cm maps between z = 6 ~ 13. We then apply two observational effects, such as instrumental noise and limit of (spatial and depth) resolution somewhat suitable for realistic choices of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), into the 21-cm maps. We design our deep learning model with CNN to predict the sliced-averaged neutral hydrogen fraction from the given 21-cm map. The estimated neutral fraction from our CNN model has great agreement with the true value even after coarsely smoothing with broad beam size and frequency bandwidth and heavily covered by noise with narrow beam size and frequency bandwidth. Our results show that the deep learning analyzing method has the potential to reconstruct the EoR history efficiently from the 21-cm tomography surveys in future.

  • This paper addresses an adaptive postprocessing method applied in the spatial domain for block-based discrete cosine transform (BDCT) coded images. The proposed algorithm is designed by a serial concatenation of a 1D simple smoothing filter and a 2D directional filter. The 1D smoothing filter is applied according to the block type, which is determined by an adaptive threshold. It depends on local statistical properties, and updates block types appropriately by a simple rule, which affects the performance of deblocking processes. In addition, the 2D directional filter is introduced to suppress the ringing effects at the sharp edges and the block discontinuities while preserving true edges and textural information. Comprehensive experiments indicate that the proposed algorithm outperforms many deblocking methods in the literature, in terms of PSNR and subjective visual quality evaluated by GBIM.

  • Though there have been many methods to detect features in spatial domain, in the case of a compressed image it has to be decoded, processed and encoded again. Alternatively, we can manipulate a compressed image directly in the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) domain that has been used for compressing videos or images in the standards like MPEG and JPEG. In our previous work we proposed a model-based discontinuity evaluation technique in the DCT domain that had problems in the rotated or non-ideal discontinuities. In this paper, we propose a fuzzy filtering technique that consists of height fuzzification, direction fuzzification, and forty filtering of discontinuities. The enhancement achieved by the fuzzy tittering includes the linking, thinning, and smoothing of discontinuities in the DCT domain. Although the detected discontinuities are rough in a low-resolution image for the size (8${\times}$8 pixels) of the DCT block, experimental results show that this technique is fast and stable to enhance the qualify of discontinuities.
