  • There is a growing interest in ubiquitous-related research and applications. Among them, GPS-based LBS have been developed and used actively. Recently, with the increase of large size buildings and disastrous events, indoor spaces are getting attention and related research activities are being carried out. Core technologies regarding indoor applications may include 3D indoor data modeling and localization sensor techniques that can integrate with indoor data. However, these technologies have not been standardized and established enough to be applied to indoor implementation. Thus, in this paper, we propose a method to build a relatively simple 3D indoor data modeling technique that can be applied to indoor location based applications. The proposed model takes the form of 2D-based multi-layered structure and has capability for 2D and 3D visualization. We tested three prototype applications using the proposed model; CA(cellular automata)-based 3D evacuation simulation, network-based routing, and indoor moving objects tracking using a stereo camera.

  • Supervised machine learning has become popular in discovering context descriptions from sensor data. However, collecting a large amount of labeled training data in order to guarantee good performance requires a great deal of expense and time. For this reason, semi-supervised learning has recently been developed due to its superior performance despite using only a small number of labeled data. In the existing semi-supervised learning algorithms, unlabeled data are used to build a graph Laplacian in order to represent an intrinsic data geometry. In this paper, we represent the unlabeled data as the spatial-temporal dataset by considering smoothly moving objects over time and space. The developed algorithm is evaluated for position estimation of a smartphone-based robot. In comparison with other state-of-art semi-supervised learning, our algorithm performs more accurate location estimates.

  • Visible light communication (VLC) is considered to be an attractive scheme to realize the broadband wireless communication for an indoor environment. We present a room division multiplexing (RDM) mechanism for an indoor multi-room VLC network, which utilizes the spatial position of the LED lamp in different rooms as a novel dimension of network resource for multiplexing, and thus the network capacity is increased. In such a network, the service interruption caused by user cross-room movement is an important problem, and we propose a double-area-positioning based cross-room switch solution. An experimental platform demonstrates the RDM-deployed VLC network, and validates the performance of the presented switch mechanism.

  • Many signal processing methods of widening the sound image for spatial impression have been studied. Most typical methods of widening the sound image are related to the phase shifting and precedence effect. However, these methods are not effective in center sound image. As listener's position moves from center to outside, the center sound image is shifted to the speaker. That is to say, the directional localization of center sound image is unstable. In this paper, we propose a television audio system including center speaker, and analyze the role of center speaker using theory of Makida and precedence effect. In experiments, we confirm the usefulness of the center speaker for the stability of center sound image.

  • Photonic crystals, periodic structure with a high refractive index contrast modulation, have recently become very interesting platform for the manipulation of light. The existence of a photonic bandgap, a frequency range in which the propagation of light is prevented in all directions, makes photonic crystal very useful in application where the spatial localization of light is required, for example waveguide, beam splitter, and cavity. However, the fabrication of 3 dimensional photonic crystals is still difficult process. A concept that has recently attracted a lot of attention is a planar photonic crystal based on a dielectric membrane, suspended in the air and perforated with two dimensional lattice of hole. The fabrication of Si master with pillar structure using hot embossing process is investigated for two dimensional, low-index-contrast photonic crystal waveguide. From our research we show that the multiple stamp copy process proved to be feasible and useful.

  • In this paper, we propose an integrated algorithm for scene recognition, which has been a challenging computer vision problem, with application to mobile robot localization. The proposed scene recognition method utilizes SIFT and visual words as local-level features and GIST as a global-level feature. As local-level and global-level features complement each other, it results in improved performance for scene recognition. This improved algorithm is of low computational complexity and robust to image distortions.

  • This paper presents an experimental study on the detection and location of nonlinear scattering source due to the presence of fatigue crack in a laboratory specimen. The proposed technique is based on a combination of nonlinear elastic wave spectroscopy(NEWS) and time reversal(TR) focusing approach. In order to focus on the nonlinear scattering position due to the fatigue crack, we employed only one transmitting transducer and one receiving transducer, taking advantage of long duration of reception signal that includes multiple linear scattering such as mode conversion and boundary reflections. NEWS technique was then used as a pre-treatment of TR for spatial focusing of reemitted second harmonic signal. The robustness of this approach was demonstrated on a cracked specimen and the nonlinear TR focusing behavior is observed on the crack interface from which the second harmonic signal was originated.

(Time Delay of Arrival: TDOA)

  • Subtractive library hybridization was used to isolate the cDNA clones that corresponded to the transcripts that were specifically up-regulated during wheat embryo germination. The clones with numbers 5, 6, 7, 8, 24, and 26 appeared to be more abundant in germinating wheat embryos. Among the isolated clones, we identified four new members of the wheat "germin" gene family. We also identified two novel sequences which exhibited distinct germination up-regulation, and displayed characteristic spatial patterns of expression. One of these, represented by clone pSB10, was principally expressed in the root tissue of germinating embryos. The second was represented by the pSB7 clone and was expressed in both the root and shoot primordia of the embryonic axis, as well as within the coleoptile.
