We are concerned with developing a robust method for comprehensive scene analysis. In particular, we address the problem of representing spatial relations between regions in a segmented 2D image. Spatial relations are modeled as fuzzy sets. The method has two aspects, symbolic and quantitative, consisting of assigning labels for spatial relations and numeric degrees to which a relation holds respectively. The procedure of deriving a spatial relation is hierarchical taking into account geometric/physical characteristics of the regions in question.
In this paper, voice activity detection (VAD) for dual-channel noisy speech recognition is proposed in which spatial cues are employed. In the proposed method, a probability model for speech presence/absence is constructed using spatial cues obtained from dual-channel input signal, and a speech activity interval is detected through this probability model. In particular, spatial cues are composed of interaural time differences and interaural level differences of dual-channel speech signals, and the probability model for speech presence/absence is based on a Gaussian kernel density. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed VAD method, speech recognition is performed for speech segments that only include speech intervals detected by the proposed VAD method. The performance of the proposed method is compared with those of several methods such as an SNR-based method, a direction of arrival (DOA) based method, and a phase vector based method. It is shown from the speech recognition experiments that the proposed method outperforms conventional methods by providing relative word error rates reductions of 11.68%, 41.92%, and 10.15% compared with SNR-based, DOA-based, and phase vector based method, respectively.
Korea and Japan have done a lot of research on composite girders with corrugated steel webs and built many bridges with corrugated steel webs due to the significant advantages of this type of bridges. Considering the demanding on the calculation method of such types of bridges and lack of relevant reinforcement design method, this paper proposes the spatial grid analysis theory and tensile stress region method. First, the accuracy and applicability of spatial grid model in analyzing composite girders with corrugated steel webs was validated by the comparison with models using shell and solid elements. Then, in a real engineering practice, the reinforcement designs from tensile stress region method based on spatial grid model, design empirical method and specification method are compared. The results show that the tensile stress region reinforcement design method can realize the inplane and out-of-plane reinforcement design in the top and bottom slabs in bridges with corrugated steel webs. The economy and precision of reinforcement design using the tensile stress region method is emphasized. Therefore, the tensile stress region reinforcement design method based on the spatial grid model can provide a new direction for the refined design of composite box girder with corrugated steel webs.
In order to revitalize rural areas fundamentally through multifunctional utilization of their resources, it should be necessary to prepare the rational development plan to the areal characteristics and conditions, and the first priority of its planning works should be given to spatial planning. The space syntax method, a powerful objective and quantitative analysis tool on the relationship between social and spatial characteristics, was introduced in this study. Five Comprehensive Rural Clustered Villages Development Areas in the Jeonnam-province were selected as case study areas, of which total area's and included villages' spatial variables were measured and analyzed. Rural villages analyzed in this study have the spatial structure badly systematized and much complicated, which results from low integration and deep spatial depth of them. And, by virtue of relatively many axial lines, there should be few differences between villages in terms of local integration, connectivity and control, while being significant difference in terms of global integration showing the whole areal characteristics. Intelligibility, the correlation coefficient between connectivity(local variable) and integration(global one) is low, which means that the spatial structure of the study areas is difficult for visitors to understand the area or village well. Spatial configuration analysis results in the case study areas showed that each development area has a unique spatial structure and is differentiated in terms of not only local spatial variables but also global spatial variables. Therefore, global and local characteristics should be considered in spatial analysis of development areas.
This study applied the Bayesian method for the quantification of the parameter uncertainty of spatial linear mixed model in the estimation of the spatial distribution of probability rainfall. In the application of Bayesian method, the prior sensitivity analysis was implemented by using the priors normally selected in the existing studies which applied the Bayesian method for the puppose of assessing the influence which the selection of the priors of model parameters had on posteriors. As a result, the posteriors of parameters were differently estimated which priors were selected, and then in the case of the prior combination, F-S-E, the sizes of uncertainty intervals were minimum and the modes, means and medians of the posteriors were similar to the estimates using the existing classical methods. From the comparitive analysis between Bayesian and plug-in spatial predictions, we could find that the uncertainty of plug-in prediction could be slightly underestimated than that of Bayesian prediction.
The purpose of this study is to clarify the relationship between the exhibits layout and the spatial organization in exhibition spaces. As an analytical method, the space syntax theory devised by Bill Hillier(1984) was applied for analysing the potential differentiation of exhibition spaces and remodeling method in Seoul City Museum selected for case study. The results are as following. Especially from the convex analysis, axial analysis and exhibits(interpretation); 1) the closed spatial system(1F) has high visibility and high intelligibility in hall area but lacks route continuity, 2) the circulated spatial system(2F) has low global visibility but offers high intelligibility and connectivity due to its coercive circulation, 3) and the organization of exhibition design consists in differentiating space that reintegrates them into another spatial order. Therefore, there process are expected to provide a methodological framework for analysing and interpreting spatial organizations of design, leading to the clear explanation of remodeling.
High spectral resolution of hyperspectral data enables analysis of complex natural phenomena that is reflected on the data nonlinearly. Although many manifold learning methods have been developed for such problems, most methods do not consider the spatial correlation between samples that is inherent and useful in remote sensing data. We propose a manifold learning method which directly combines the spatial proximity and the spectral similarity through kernel PCA framework. A gain factor caused by spatial proximity is first modelled with a heat kernel, and is added to the original similarity computed from the spectral values of a pair of samples. Parameters are tuned with intelligent grid search (IGS) method for the derived manifold coordinates to achieve optimal classification accuracies. Of particular interest is its performance with small training size, because labelled samples are usually scarce due to its high acquisition cost. The proposed spatial kernel PCA (KPCA) is compared with PCA in terms of classification accuracy with the nearest-neighbourhood classification method.
Generally, vector spatial data, with richer information than raster spatial data enabledata, enables a mere flexible and effective manipulation of the data sets. However, one of challenges against the publication of vector spatial information on the Internet is the efficient transmission of the big and complex vector spatial datadata, which is both large and complex, across the narrow-bandwidth of the Internet. This paper proposes a new transmission method, namely, the Scale-Dependent Transmission method, with the purpose of improving the efficiency of vector spatial data transmission on the narrow-bandwidthacross the Internet. Simply put, its nam idea is “Transmit what can be seen””. Scale is regarded as a factor naturally associated with spatial features so that not all features are visible to users at a certain scale. With the aid of the Wavelet-Wavelet-based Map Generalization Algorithm, the proposed method filters out invisible features from spatial objects according to the display scale and then to transmit onlytransmits only the visible features as athe final answer for an individual operation. Experiments show that the response times ofan individual operation has been reducedoperations were substantially by the usage of reduced when using the proposed method.
One of the most difficult problems in building a distributed GIS lies in the heterogeneity of spatial databases. In particular, positional mismatches between spatial databases, which arise due to several reasons, may incur incorrect query results. They result in unreliable outputs of query processing. One simple solution is to correct positional data in spatial databases at each site, according to the most accurate one. This solution is however not practical in cases where the autonomy of each database should be respected. In this paper, we propose a spatial query processing method without correcting positional data in each spatial database. Instead of correcting positional data, we dynamically transform a given query region or position onto each space where spatial objects of each site are located. Our proposed method is based on an elastic transformation method by using delaunay triangulation. Accuracy of this method is proved mathematically, and is confirmed by an experiment. Moreover, we implemented using common use database system for usefulness verification of this method.
The Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) is commonly used to characterize the spatial quality of imaging systems. This work is the attempt to measure the MTF for KOMPSAT EOC using the non-parametric method as ground inputs. The spatial performance of the KOMPSAT EOC was analyzed by edge method while in flight using multi-temporal image data collected over test site in Seoul. The results from this work demonstrate the potential applicability of this method to estimate MTF for high spatial resolution satellite KOMPSAT-2 that is being developed to be launched in 2005.
