  • Purpose: The characteristics of spatial allocation planning in dentistry through examining the dental hospitals in Korea and comparison between them are necessary for the development of planning of the dental healthcare system. This study has been started to provide basic informations such as zoning, allocation distribution, and space configuration for the planning of dental hospital architecture. Methods: Literature review of dental care departments and investigation on current status of dental hospital in Korea have been conducted. The spatial allocation and space configuration of eleven dental hospitals have been analyzed. Results: The result of this study can be summarized in three points. The first one is that dental hospitals in Korea are consisted with eight to eleven dental care departments and they are divided with the horizontal allocation type with three to four departments in a floor for the spatial communication or the vertical allocation type with a department in each floor for the independent space. The second one is that oral medicine and oral maxillofacial radiology are located near the main entrance, orthodontics and pedodontic dentistry in lower level, prosthodontics in upper level, and conservative dentistry and periodontics have no specific spatial consideration. The third one is that the factors to consider the allocation planning are zoning for examination & diagnosis, basic practice, adolescence, surgery, circulations for patient, dentist, staff, different access for department like as easy access for reception and pedodontic dentistry, enclosure space for prosthodontics and surgery, frequency of visit and treatment care time, and change of treatment concept from treatment department to disease control corporative practice. Implications: This study is the starting point for the research of spatial configuration in dentistry and it is necessary to analyze the architectural planning to develop the dental healthcare system.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a 3 dimensional spatial planning model (3DSPLAM) for facilities allocation and visual evaluation in improvement planning of rural village. For the model development, this study developed both planning layers and a modelling process for spatial planning of rural villages. The 3DSPLAM generates road networks and village facilities location automatically from built area plan map and digital elevation model generated by geographic information system. The model also simulates 3-dimensional villagescape for visual presentation of the planned results. The 3DSPLAM could be conveniently used for automatic allocation of roads, easy partition of land lots and reasonable locating of facilities. The planned results could be also presented in the stereoscopic models with varied viewing positions and angles.

  • This study aims to integrate the simulation models for rural settlement planning (SimRusep) in the district level (Myon) area of rural counties. The SimRusep, which has two modules of key villages selection and spatial planning for the selected villages, consists of four sub-models such as the spatial location-allocation model of center villages (SLAMCV), the potential centrality evaluation model (PCEM), the land use planning model (LUPM), and the 3-dimensional spatial planning modeller (3DSPLAM). Basically, map data of the integrated system which can be operated on the UNIX environment is inputted and treated using GIS (ARC/INFO) and then its village planning results is graphically presented on the AutoCAD. In order to verify the practical applicabilities of the SimRusep, an administrative area, Ucheon-myun, HoengSung-gun, KangWon-do, was selected as a case study area. It was well operated in the strategic application trials considering application of each sub-model in the study area. The operation results of the SimRusep showed the possibilities of realtime simulation from the selection of key village to its final stereoscopic presentation of planned results. Alternative village plan proposals can be swiftly drafted, which means very practical support for decision making process and public participation.

  • In this paper, we estimated the economic impacts of Korea-EU FTA on the agricultural sector in GyeongGi-Do. In particular, we estimated the economic impacts of agricultural production decrease resulting from Korea-EU FTA for 31 sub-regions in GyeongGi-Do by 15 industrial sectors. We employ a regional economic impact model combining a regional input-output model with a spatial allocation model. We found that the size of inter-industrial impacts are quite different across regions. Our results suggest the importance of agricultural and industrial policy considering the impacts of industrial sectors at the regional level.

  • Following the previous paper on development of the spatial location-allocation model of center villages (SLAMCV), this paper, the 2nd stage of the this study, aims to check up its applicability for several planning scenarios by the case study. Among 72 natural villages of Ucheon-myeon, Gangwon-do, Korea the highest single center was simulated as Uhang village and the higher double centers as Uhang and Jeonggeum villages, which coincided exactly with the existing centers. The SLAMCV was well operated for three planning scenarios such as selection of the 3rd center village and its hinter villages for Ucheon-myeon, Gargwon-do, Korea by dividing three living spheres, impact assessment evaluation of road improvement projects on the spatial accessibility, and analysis of centerality changes of settlement units by new road construction.

  • The spatial layout planning system allocates rectangular resources in the limited space according to user requirements, This system also can optimizes the spatial allocation problem to maximize the user's requirement. The spatial layout planning Problems for this system can be solved by searching a wide area of space since this problem entails the non-polynomial algorithm. By accommodating the user's dynamic requirements, the modification of a specific space and the redesign of the whole area can be accomplished. In this paper, the spatial layout planning problem is solved efficiently with a resource allocation method based on CSP. The dynamic constraints by adding user requirements are accommodated through the intelligent user Interface. The 3-D layout on the web environment by using VRML is also shown for providing for the visual verification of the 2-D layout and, thereafter, the additional modification of the 2-D layout.

  • Purpose: As emergency medical service fund is further expanded due to amendment of the law on emergency medical services in 2008, Korean government has prepared to intervene in a comprehensive manner to strengthen a trauma treatment system. As a result, it announced a master plan to establish a serious trauma treatment center in 16 areas across the nation. Therefore, this study has attempted to investigate the current status of the serious trauma treatment centers and suggest the goal and improvement plan of future serious trauma treatment centers. Methods: As of 2011, Korea operates 23 emergency cerebrovascular service centers, 23 emergency heart disease centers and 35 severe trauma treatment centers across the country. 12 emergency medical service centers have been chosen among the serious trauma treatment centers. Then, top six (6) centers chosen at Emergency Medical Institute Assessment 2011 by Ministry of Health and Welfare have been selected, and floor layout and spatial allocation by usage have been reviewed and analyzed. Results: Consequently, this study has investigated the spatial components, circulation layout and spatial allocation of a serious trauma treatment. For construction planning in consideration of the fundamental objectives and goal of emergency medical services, it is essential to allot spaces and select exact spatial components. It appears that it is necessary to design spaces for emergency medical services and come up with construction planning through appropriate spatial allocation.

  • In this study, we used HARVEST, a timber management strategy assessment tool, to evaluate alternative forest planning strategies on spatial pattern of cutting blocks. We applied the tool to the Gwangreung Experimental Forest (GEF) as a case study. The harvest schedules developed for GEF using a linear programming model was used to assess spatial patterns of cutting blocks under different management constraints. The results show that the allowable maximum harvest size largely affects the number, size, and distribution of cutting blocks. We also found that spatial dispersion methods and adjacency constraints could be used as an effective means to control spatial allocation of cutting blocks in order to meet certain forest ecosystem management goals.

  • To better understand the heat wave phenomenon in the urban areas, it is desirable to explore the relationship between spatial allocation of land use and the heat wave. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the ranking correlation between heat wave days and developed types, specifically, core and islet developments. The methods employed are morphological spatial pattern, spatial autocorrelation, and spearman ranking correlation analyses by using the 30-year annual heat wave day records forthe five metropolitans. This research indicates that a fragmented development pattern including islets has mostly negative effects to the urban heat wave phenomenon. It means there is a relation between development pattern and heat wave.
