  • A cylindrical constant volume combustion chamber was used to investigate the flow characteristics at spark plug and the combustion characteristics of inhomogeneous charge methane-air mixture under several parameters. The flow characteristics such as mean velocity and turbulence intensity was analyzed by hot wire anemometer. Combustion pressure development measured by piezoelectric pressure transducer was used to investigate the effect of initial charge pressure, excess air ratio and ignition times on combustion pressure and combustion duration. Mean velocity and turbulence intensity had the maximum value at 200 or 300ms and then decreased to beneath 0.05m/s gradually at 3 seconds. Second mixture is accompanied by an increase in the combustion rate, and that the higher the mass which is added in the second stage injection, the faster the burn rate.

  • The spray behavior of direct-injection spark-ignition(DISI) engines is crucial for obtaining the required mixture distribution for optimal engine combustion. The spray characteristics of DISI engines are affected by many factors such as piston bowl shape, air flow, ambient temperature, injection pressure and fuel temperature. In this study, the effect of fuel temperature on the spray and combustion characteristics was partially investigated for the wall-guided system. The effect of fuel temperature on the fan spray characteristics was investigated in a steady flow rig embodied in a wind tunnel. The shadowgraphy and direct imaging methods were employed to visualize the spray development at different fuel temperatures. The microscopic characteristics of spray were investigated by the particle size measurements using a phase Doppler anemometry(PDA). The effect of injector temperature on the engine combustion characteristics during cold start and warming-up operating conditions was also investigated. Optical single cylinder DISI engine was used for the test, and the successive flame images captured by high speed camera, engine-out emissions and performance data have been analyzed. This could give the way of forming the stable mixture near the spark plug to achieve the stable combustion of DISI engine.

  • Wear behavior or SiC-particle reinforced aluminum matrix composites (MMC) were investigated by pin-on-disk tests in vacuum with various pressures, argon, and air with various levels of humidity. The wear rate of 2024Al and MMC increased in the following order: in a vacuum at $5.0{\times}10^{-4}$ Pa, at 1.0Pa, in argon at 0% RH, in argon at 60% RH, in argon at 90% RH, in air at 0% RH, in air at 60% RH and in air at 90% RH. In other words, the influence or environment on wear becomes stronger in the following order: moisture, oxygen, and a combination of moisture and oxygen. In various environments, the difference of the wear rate of 2024Al and MMC was compared. In argon and air at 0% RH, the wear rates of MMC were higher than that of 2024Al. In contrast, in argon and air at 60, 90% RH, the wear rates of MMC were lower than that of 2024Al.

  • Most of the research of small engines to date focused on developing spark ignition engines occupied much parts. Recently the number of a small direct injection diesel engine applied in small cars has been increased and considered as a next generation power source for passenger cars because of its high efficiency. Therefore the combustion chamber becomes smaller and the fuel injection pressure goes higher, which makes fuel sprays impinged easily on the combustion chamber walls. When strong swirls are not induced, the fuel may not mix with air because of fuel deposition on the wall. As a positive way, the combustion chamber systems which is using spray wall impaction has been introduced and assessed by an experimental or a simulate manner. In these systems the raised lands are positioned in tile chamber for spray impaction in order to break up the fuel drops into much smaller and direct them into desirable direction. This study addresses to the effects of rho position and size of the raised land or glow plug to help the chamber design using spray wall impaction. The characteristics of the spray impinged on various lands are investigated and compared with each other. Then the chamber shapes are discussed with the characteristics and their proper position and size is proposed in any chamber volume.

  • The prediction of heat loss during laminar flame propagation was carried out by measurement of gas pressure and visualization of flame propagation in the constant volume combustion chamber. And to validate the prediction, the instantaneous temperature at wall of combustion chamber was also measured. Consequently, it was found that heat loss was increased according to increasing of maximum flame travel distance, but rate of heat loss for heat release during laminar flame propagation was nearly constant. And heat loss depends on heat transfer area which was contacted the wall by burned gas regardless to spark plug location.

  • Development of an engine with good fuel economy is very important for successful implementation of long endurance miniature UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles). In the study, a 4-stroke glow-plug engine was modified to a gasoline-fueled spark-ignition engine. Engine tests measuring performance and friction losses were conducted to tune a simulation program for performance prediction. It has been found that excessive friction losses are caused by insufficient lubrication at high speeds. The simulation program predicts that engine power and fuel economy get worse with high altitude due to increasing portion of friction losses. The simulation results suggest quantitative guidelines for further development of a practical engine.

  • Recently GDI(Gasoline Direct Injection) engine is spotlighted to achieve higher thermal efficiency under partial loads and better performance at full loads. To realize this system, it is essential to make both stratified combustion and homogeneous combustion. When compared to PFI(Port Fuel Injection) engine, GDI engine needs more complicated control and optimal design with injection system. In addition, spray pattern must be optimized according to injection timing because ambient pressure in combustion chamber is also varied. Thus spray structure should be analyzed in details to meet various conditions. In this experimental study, two types of visualization system were developed to simulate compression stroke and intake stroke, respectively. With an increase of the ambient pressure, the penetration length tends to decrease due to rising resistance caused by the drag force of the ambient air. Spray characteristics impinged on the piston has a significant effect on mixture stratification around the spark plug. These results provide the information on macroscopic spray structure and design factors far developing GDI injector.

  • Purpose: This study deals with a production planning and scheduling problem to minimize the total weighted tardiness on hybrid flow shop with sets of non-identical parallel machines on stages, where parallel machines in the set are dedicated to perform specific subsets of jobs and sequence-dependent setup times are also considered. Methods: A two-stage approach, that applies MILP model in the 1st stage and dispatching rules in the 2nd stage, is proposed in this paper. The MILP model is used to assign jobs to a specific machine in order to equalize the workload of the machines at each stage, while new dispatching rules are proposed and applied to sequence jobs in the queue at each stage. Results: The proposed two-stage approach was implemented by using a commercial MILP solver and a commercial simulation software and a case study was developed based on the spark plug manufacturing process, which is an automotive component, and verified using the company's actual production history. The computational experiment shows that it can reduce the tardiness when used in conjunction with the dispatching rule. Conclusion: This proposed two-stage approach can be used for HFS systems with dedicated machines, which can be evaluated in terms of tardiness and makespan. The method is expected to be used for the aggregated production planning or shop floor-level production scheduling.

  • Today gasoline engines for vehicular application are not only faced with stringent emission regulation but also with increasing requirements to better fuel economy, while guaranteeing power density. The spray-guided type gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine has an advantage of improved thermal efficiency and lower harmful emissions. Centrally mounted high pressure injector and adjacent spark plug allow stable lean combustion due to the flexible mixture stratification. In the present study, the performance and emissions characteristics of developed spray-guided type GDI combustion system were evaluated at various excess air ratio conditions. The specific fuel consumption and nitrogen oxides ($NO_x$) emissions were reduced due to the achievement of stable lean combustion under flammability limit. Multiple injection strategy was not helpful to improve fuel consumption while further reduction of $NO_x$ emissions was possible.

  • Optimum engine performance is obtained when the spray characteristics is well matched to the geometry of a combustion chamber. Among many parameters governing the combustion performance in internal combustion engine, fuel supply characteristics and atomization are important performance factors. Therefore, spray characteristics of high pressure multi-hole injector has been studied experimentally. An experimental test system has been made to operate high pressure injection system and to visualize spray behavior. Spray visualization has been performed to analyze spray formation, spray cone angle, bent angle and penetration length. Spray interaction with piston has been analyzed with various injector installation angle, injection pressure and ambient pressure. Test results show that penetration length is greatly influenced by the injection pressure. Penetration length is decreased as ambient pressure increased. Spray cone angle is increased as injection pressure and ambient pressure increased. However, bent angle is not influenced by the change of injection pressure and ambient pressure. Spray cone angle distribution map is plotted using the experimental data. Fuel movement around the spark-plug has been enforced as increasing injector installation angle.
