Vehicle idle has become an increasing quality concern for automobile manufacturers because of its impact on customer satisfaction. As demand for better fuel economy increases, automobile manufacturers are continuously looking for any benefits from different driving conditions. Combustion variability in spark ignition engines was recognized that the stability of engine at idle is affected by the factors of fuel injection timing, ignition timing and air-fuel ratio. Therefore in this research, the results will be shown the effects of stability and the variations at idle according to fuel injection timing, ignition timing and air-fuel ratio as the basic parameters.
A knock detection circuit that is based on the signal of an accelerometer installed on the engine block of a spark ignition automotive engine has a band-pass filter with a certain frequency as a parameter to be calibrated. A new statistical method for the determination of the frequency which is the most suitable for the knock detection in real-time applications is proposed. The method uses both the cylinder pressure and block vibration signals and is divided into two steps. In both steps, a new recursive trigonometric interpolation method that calculates the frequency contents of the signals is applied. The new trigonometric interpolation method developed in this paper improves the performance of the Discrete Fourier Transformation, allowing a flexible choice of the size of the moving window. In the first step, the frequency contents of the cylinder pressure signal are calculated. The knock is detected in the cylinder of the engine cycle for which at least one value of the maximal amplitudes calculated via the trigonometric interpolation method exceeds a threshold value indicating a considerable amount of oscillations in the pressure signal; this cycle is selected as a knocking cycle. In the second step, the frequency analysis is performed on the block vibration signal for the cycles selected in the previous step. The knock detectability, which is an individual cylinder attribute at a certain frequency, is verified via a statistical hypothesis test for testing the equality of two mean values, i.e. mean values of the amplitudes for knocking and non-knocking cycles. Signal-to-noise ratio is associated in this paper with the value of t-statistic. The frequency with the largest signal-to-noise ratio (the value of t-statistic) is chosen for implementation in the engine knock detection circuit.

This paper presents further investigation into the effect of over-expansion cycle in a spark-ignition engine. On the basis of the results obtained in previous studies, several combinations of late-closing (LC) of intake valve and expansion ratio were tested using a single-cylinder production engine. A large volume of intake capacity was inserted into the intake manifold to simulate multi-cylinder engines. With the large capacity volume, LC can decrease the pumping loss and then increase the mechanical efficiency. Increasing the expansion ratio from 11 to 23.9 with LC application can produce about 13% improvement of thermal efficiency which was suggested to be caused by the increased cycle efficiency. The decrease of compression ratio from 11 to 5.5 gives little effect on the thermal efficiency if the expansion ratio could be kept constant. Thus, the expansion ratio is revealed to be a determining factor for cycle efficiency, while compression ratio is no more important, which suggests the usefulness of controlling the intake charge with intake valve closure timing. These were successfully explained by simple thermodynamic calculation and thus the mechanism could be verified by the estimation.

In this study the possibility of hydrogen as a fuel in a small-sized two-stroke SI (Spark ignition) engine was investigated. For this purpose, experimental setup including an engine, a dynamometer, equipments for hydrogen and lubricant oil supply was prepared. And then preliminary experiments for the hydrogen-fueled engine combustion were conducted. In the case of hydrogen-fueled engines comparing to gasoline backfire occurs when the excess air ratio is lower than a specific value. This can cause engine power reduction and damage to the engine parts. The engine was controlled to operate at lean conditions to prevent backfire. Through the control of excess air ratio, the maximum engine brake power output of 3 kW was achieved in a 210 cc engine, while it was 6 kW in case of gasoline fuel.

In recent years, high efficiency, high performance, and low pollutant emmision engines have been developed. Knock phenomenon has drawn interests because it became an hinderance to engine power and efficiency increase through higher compression ratio. Knock phenomenon is an abnormal combustion originated from autoignition of unburned gas in the end-gas region during the later stage of combustion process and accompanied a high pitched metallic noise. And this phenomenon is characterized by knock occurrence percentage, knock occurrence angle and knock intensity. A four cylinder spark ignition engine is used in our experiment, and its combustion chamber pressure is measured at various engine speeds, ignition timing. The data are analyzed by numerous methods in order to select the optimum methods and to achieve better understanding of knock characteristics. Methods using band-pass filter, third derivative and step method are shown to be the most suitable, while methods using frequency analysis are shown to be unsuitable. Because step method only uses signals above threshold value during knocking condition, pressure signal analyses with this method show good signal-to-noise ratio.

The spray behavior of direct-injection spark-ignition(DISI) engines is crucial for obtaining the required mixture distribution for optimal engine combustion. The spray characteristics of DISI engines are affected by many factors such as piston bowl shape, air flow, ambient temperature, injection pressure and fuel temperature. In this study, the effect of fuel temperature on the spray and combustion characteristics was partially investigated for the wall-guided system. The effect of fuel temperature on the fan spray characteristics was investigated in a steady flow rig embodied in a wind tunnel. The shadowgraphy and direct imaging methods were employed to visualize the spray development at different fuel temperatures. The microscopic characteristics of spray were investigated by the particle size measurements using a phase Doppler anemometry(PDA). The effect of injector temperature on the engine combustion characteristics during cold start and warming-up operating conditions was also investigated. Optical single cylinder DISI engine was used for the test, and the successive flame images captured by high speed camera, engine-out emissions and performance data have been analyzed. This could give the way of forming the stable mixture near the spark plug to achieve the stable combustion of DISI engine.
During cold operation period, fuel injection system directly contributes the unburned hydrocarbon formation in spark ignition engines. The relationship between injection parameters and HC emission behavior was investigated through a series of experiments. Spray behavior of port fuel injectors was characterized through a quantitative evaluation of mass concentration of liquid fuel by a patternator and PDA. 6-hole injector was found to produce finer spray than single hole one. Using a purpose-built test rig, the wall wetting fuel was measured, which was mostly affected by wall temperature. Varying coolant temperature($20{\sim}80^{\circ}C$), HC emissions were measured in a production engine. With respect to the different types of injectors, HC emission was also measured. In the 6-hole injector application, the engine produced less HC emission in low coolant temperature region. Though it produces much more amount of wetting fuel, it has the advantages of finer atomization quality. In high coolant temperature region, there was little effect between different types of injectors. The control schemes to reduce HC emissions during cold start could be suggested from the findings that the amount of fuel supply and HC emission could be reduced by utilizing fine spray and high intake wall temperature.
Most of the research of small engines to date focused on developing spark ignition engines occupied much parts. Recently the number of a small direct injection diesel engine applied in small cars has been increased and considered as a next generation power source for passenger cars because of its high efficiency. Therefore the combustion chamber becomes smaller and the fuel injection pressure goes higher, which makes fuel sprays impinged easily on the combustion chamber walls. When strong swirls are not induced, the fuel may not mix with air because of fuel deposition on the wall. As a positive way, the combustion chamber systems which is using spray wall impaction has been introduced and assessed by an experimental or a simulate manner. In these systems the raised lands are positioned in tile chamber for spray impaction in order to break up the fuel drops into much smaller and direct them into desirable direction. This study addresses to the effects of rho position and size of the raised land or glow plug to help the chamber design using spray wall impaction. The characteristics of the spray impinged on various lands are investigated and compared with each other. Then the chamber shapes are discussed with the characteristics and their proper position and size is proposed in any chamber volume.

Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is used in spark ignition (SI) engines. Fuel injection rate of an injector is affected by fuel temperature and pressure in LPG liquid injection systems for either a multi-point-injection (MPI) or a direct injection (DI) engine. Even fuel injection conditions are varied, the air-fuel ratio should be accurately controlled to reduce exhaust emissions. In this study, a correction factor fur the fuel injection rate of an injector is derived from density ratio and pressure difference ratio. A compensation method of injected fuel amount is proposed for a fuel injection control system. The experimental results for the LPG liquid injection system in a SI engine show that this system works well fur a full range of engine speed and load condition, and the air-fuel ratio is accurately controlled by the proposed correction factor.
