Air void systems in hardened concrete has an important influence on concrete durability such as freeze-thaw resistance, water permeability, surface scaling resistance. Linear traverse method and point count method described at ASTM is the routine analysis of the air void system that have been widely used to estimate the spacing factor in hardened concrete. Recently, many concretes often have a spacing factor higher than the generally accepted $200-250{\mu}m$ limit for the usual range of air contents. This study is proposed to estimate the matrix spacing factor by calculation of simplicity. The matrix spacing factor needs two parameters that are air content and numbers of air voids in the hardened concrete. Those are obtained from the standard air-void system analysis of the ASTM C 457. The equation is valid for all values of paste-to-air ratio because the estimation of paste content is unnecessary at the using ASTM C 457. The matrix spacing factor yields a similar estimate of the standard spacing factor.

Linear traverse method and point count method described at ASTM are the routine analysis of the air void system that have been widely used to estimate the spacing factor in hardened concrete. Recently, many concretes often have a spacing factor higher than the generally accepted $200-250{\mu}m$ limit for the usual range of air contents. This study is proposed to estimate the plane spacing factor by calculation of simplicity. The plane spacing factor need two parameters that are air content and numbers of air voids in the hardened concrete. Those obtained from the standard air-void system analysis of the ASTM C 457. The equation is valid for all values of paste-to-air ratio because the estimation of paste content is unnecessary at the using ASTM C 457. The plane spacing factor yields a similar estimate of the standard spacing factor.
One of the typical evaluation models of concrete air-void system is spacing factor (SF), which was suggested by Power. Power Spacing Factor (PSF) has a disadvantage of the result being different from the actual case due to the existence of entrapped air, because PSF uses average single spacing factor. Therefore, the Actual Measurement Spacing Factor (AMSF) using actually measured data of air void spacing was developed from this study. PSF and AMSF were compared and evaluated in this study by using the image analysis test result of concrete mixture. This study results showed that PSF and AMSF are generally similar, but AMSF had a larger value when PSF was greater than $400{\mu}m$. The results indicated a possibility of PSF giving false measurement estimation where the measurement is less than the actual value in the concrete mixture containing less air. Also, in the result of PSF and AMSF analysis according to the existence of entrapped air, AMSF showed a larger value in the analysis without entrapped air. But PSF showed a smaller value in the analysis without entrapped air, which was different from the actual case. Because PSF used average single spacing factor, it tended to give a false result. The study results showed that AMSF gave more accurate analysis results.

Spacing factor proposed by Power is a concept of averaging air void spacing composed of geometric models. Thus, there's a limitation on simulating actual air void characteristics in concrete. This study presents SDI(spacing distribution index) to overcome the limitation of spacing factor. SDI is also evaluated through comparing SDI with SF(spacing factor). In this study, it was confirmed that SF decreased due to increasing air-entrainer content but SDI increased. This occurs because SDI is the area of spacing distribution curve and SDI increases with increasing the frequency of spacing. SDI is evaluated to have better coverage below $300{\mu}m$ of SF so that determination of critical point of SDI above 80% of durability index can be easily obtained with more reliability. SDI is the area of spacing distribution curve and reflects actual air void characteristics in concrete. A comparative study of SDI and results of freeze-thaw test will be performed later.
The experiments were conducted by using water and paraffin slurry to investigate the effect of a chip spacing in the multichip module on the cooling characteristics from an in-line $4{\times}3$ array of discrete heat sources which were flush mounted on the top wall of a channel. The experimental parameters were chip spacing in a multichip module, heat flux of simulated VLSI chip, mass fraction of paraffin slurry, and channel Reynolds number. The removable heat flux at the same chip surface temperature decreased as the chip spacing decreased at the first and fourth rows. The local heat transfer coefficients for the paraffin slurry were larger than those for water, and the chip spacing on the local heat transfer coefficients for paraffin slurry influenced less than that for water. The enhancement factor for paraffin slurry showed the largest value at a mass fraction of 5% regardless of the chip spacing, and the enhancement factors increased as the chip spacing decreased. This means that the paraffin slurry is more effective than water for cooling of the highly integrated multichip module.

PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to verify the causes of surface scaling at L-shoulder concrete structure. METHODS : From the literature reviews, mechanisms of frost damage were studied and material properties including strength, air void, spacing factor and scaling resistance of L-shoulder concrete structure were analyzed using core specimens taken by real fields. RESULTS : The spacing factor of air void has relatively high correlation of surface conditions : lower spacing factor at good surfacing condition and vice versa. If the compressive strength is high, even thought spacing factor does not reach the threshold value of reasonable durability, the surface scaling resistance shows higher value. Based on these test results, the compressive strength also provide positive effect on the surface scaling resistance. CONCLUSIONS : The main causes of surface scaling of L-shoulder could be summarized as unsuitable aid void amount and poor quality of air void structure. Secondly, although the compressive strength is not the governing factor of durability, but it shows the positive effect on the surface scaling resistance.
PURPOSES : The use of roller-compacted concrete pavement (RCCP) is an environmentally friendly method of construction that utilizes the aggregate interlock effect by means of a hydration reaction and roller compacting, demonstrating a superb structural performance with a relatively small unit water content and unit cement content. However, even if an excellent structural performance was secured through a previous study, the verification research on the environmental load and long-term durability was conducted under unsatisfactory conditions. In order to secure longterm durability, the construction of an appropriate internal air-void structure is required. In this study, a method of improving the long-term durability of RCCP will be suggested by analyzing the internal air-void structure and relevant durability of roller-compacted concrete. METHODS : The method of improving the long-term durability involves measurements of the air content, air voids, and air-spacing factor in RCCP that experiences a change in terms of the kind of air-entraining agent and chemical admixture proportions. This test should be conducted on the basis of test criteria such as ASTM C 457, 672, and KS F 2456. RESULTS : Freezing, thawing, and scaling resistance tests of roller compacted concrete without a chemical admixture showed that it was weak. However, as a result of conducting air entraining (AE) with an AE agent, a large amount of air was distributed with a range of 2~3%, and an air void spacing factor ranging from 200 to $300{\mu}m$ (close to $250{\mu}m$) coming from PCA was secured. Accordingly, the freezing and thawing resistance was improved, with a relative dynamic elastic modulus of more than 80%, and the scaling resistance was improved under the appropriate AE agent content rate. CONCLUSIONS : The long-term durability of RCCP has a direct relationship with the air-void spacing factor, and it can be secured only by ensuring the air void spacing factor through air entraining with the inclusion of an AE agent.

Characteristics of joint orientation, length, spacing and their distribution are very important factors for slope stability, Especially, the effect of joint spacing is an essential factor of slope stability. This study is to analyze the effect of joint spacing in cases of sliding and toppling, which is a typical failure mode. Joint spacing can divided into vertical spacing(spacing) and horizontal spacing(gap). And then, the spacing/length ratio of joint directly affect rock slope failure. When the ratio is below 0.05, the possibility of failure is rapidly increased. In case of toppling, the possibility of failure depends on the ratio of spacing to height of slope ratio slope. As the ratio decreases, the possibility of toppling failure increased. The critical ratio of spacing to height of slope is determined by the dip angle of the slope and the orientation of joint sets.
The lateral strength test of bending type was done to investigate the lateral capacity of the double bolt connection of domestic larix glulam according to bolt spacing. In the shear specimen, which is bolted connection in the inserted plate type, the hole of bolt was made, changing the diameter of bolt (12 mm and 16 mm), the number of bolt (single bolt : control and double bolt), the direction of bolt row (in parallel to grain : Type-A and in perpendicular to grain : Type-B) and the bolt spacing (Type-A : 4 d and 7 d and Type-B : 3 d and 5 d). Lateral capacity and failure mode of bolt connection were compared according to conditions. In prototype design (KBCS, 2000), the reduction factor of the allowable shear resistance that the bolt spacing is reduced was calculated. The results were as follows. 1) Bearing stress per bolt in the single and double bolt connection of Type-A was directly proportional to bolt diameter and bolt spacing. Bearing stress of Type-B decreased as bolt diameter was increased, and decreased by 2~10% when bolt diameter was increased. 2) In the single bolt connection and the double bolt connection of Type-A, the splitted failure was formed in the edge direction. When the bolt spacing was 3 d in Type-B, bolt was yielded more in the part of tension than in the part of compression, and the splitted failure started at the bolt in the part of tension. In the 5 d spacing specimen, the bolt in the part of tension was yielded similarly to bolt in the part of compression, and the splitted failure started in the part of compression. 3) In the prototype design, the reduction factor was calculated by non-dimensionizing the yielding load in the standard of bolt spacing (Type A : 7 d and Type B : 5 d). In 12 mm bolt connection, the reduction factor of bolt spacing 4 d (type-A) and single bolt connection was 0.87 and 0.55, respectively, and the reduction factor of bolt spacing 3 d (Type-B) and single bolt connection was 0.91 and 0.55, respectively. In 16 mm bolt connection, the reduction factor of bolt spacing 4 d (type-A) and single bolt connection was 0.96 and 0.76, respectively, and the reduction factor of bolt spacing 3 d (Type-B) and single bolt connection was 0.91 and 0.77, respectively.

This study was conducted to estimate deterioration reason of jointed concrete pavement. Image analysis tests were performed according to ASTM C 457 using concrete core specimens. Durability factors were estimated according to spacing factor, which is related with air content and air-void information. Test results show that spacing factors of most specimens were estimated above 250$\mu$m so that investigated concrete pavement has the problem of freeze and thawing resistance.
